End of Line is best track

Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks (2004)

Beautiful melancholy electronic chamber music interspersed with female voice-overs (similar to FSOL, who Max Richter has collaborated with, and JMJ in Metamorphoses). You can imagine his works as the soundtrack to a bleak period drama. On the Nature of Daylight is a particularly good introductory track of 6min. The rest is very ambient and pleasant, with a couple of short tracks standing out such as Vladimir's Blues.

Portishead - Dummy (1994)

A mixture of some excellent, distinctive tracks like Mysterons, Glory Box, Sour Times and Roads, with some consistently good background music fillers.

Portishead - Portishead (1997)

A consistent identifiably Portishead sound throughout, but with no stand-out tracks. OK background music.

Portishead - Third (2008)

The first 6 tracks are better than the remaining 5, with a more consistent musical flow that is recognisably Portishead. My favourite tracks are Hunter and The Rip.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008)

More upbeat than earlier albums, with a warmer, deeper sound. You can see Brian Eno's influence with the displacement of guitar riffs by synthesisers giving a more electronic new-wavey sound. Only the traditional Brit-pop rock anthem Violet Hill stands out . The title track, Viva La Vida, sounds quite Christmassy to me, Strawberry Swing seems to have something of a Beetles influence and the last track in typical Coldplay fashion is very much a not-entity bookend.
