How Varied Is Your Music Taste?

14 jan. 2010, 2h19m

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Final Score:

Blonde Redhead

Gordon Lightfoot

Belle and Sebastian

Kylie Minogue

The Thermals

The Dø

Marcy Playground

Jim Noir

The Geraldine Fibbers

you realise this doesnt work since some preffered genres such as metal have enormous numbers of artists per detailed sub-genre. whilst underground hip-hop, reggae, dubstep, garage etc etc havent and yet the variety is prodigous.

I disagree. I agree with what you are saying about either the lack of metal sub-genres (or the proliferate nature of electronic/hip-hop sub-genres). But I don't believe that affects this particular method of measuring music diversity. This method relies on 'Similar Artists', and not tags. To the best of my knowledge, generates similar artists based on the artists that listeners have in common with each other.

I made it with 7 sim. artists just to be easier. I got 107/140 which proves how subjective this method is cause I have 17 Hip Hop artists in my top 20(and didn't get the maximum points for the other three).
