Wojciech Kilar born in 1932 in Lvov, studied piano with Władysław Markiewicz and composition with Bolesław Woytowicz at the State Higher School of Music in Katowice. He completed his composition studies under Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He has received many artistic awards, including the Lili Boulanger Prize for Composers (1960), the State Award, First Degree (1980), the Award the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts (1967 and 1976), the Prize od the Polish Composers' Union (1975), the Award od the Katowice Voivodship (1971, 1975 and 1980), and the Award od the City of Katowice (1975).
