  • Bands with brilliant lyrics

    22 juin 2008, 0h11m

    Well I love looking at lyrics, so I thought I'd post who I thought makes/made the most brilliant lyrics. Feel free to comment and leave your ideas!

    mewithoutYou - Aaron Weiss is a great lyrics writer, brings deep ideas into his music pretty smoothly. One of his songs is named "A Glass Can Only Spill What It Contains" Think about that one for awhile.
    Favorite lyrics:
    oh, there I go showing off again,
    self-impressed by how well I can put myself down!
    and there I go again, to the next further removed level of that same exact feigned humility!)))
    [and this for me goes on and on to the point of nausea]
    shadow am I!
    like a suspicion that's never confirmed
    but it's never denied
    Wolf am I!
    (((no, "shadow" I think is better,
    as I'm not something, more like the absence of something)))
    So SHADOW AM I!
    the whole material world seems to me like a newspaper headline -
    it's explicitly demands your attention
    and it may even contain some truth,
    but what's really going on here?
    (From the song "Wolf Am I (And Shadow)")

    The Receiving End of Sirens - TREOS has always been great at writing lyrics, before and after Casey left. Their wordsmithing skills are incredible. For example, in their album The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi, they compared Keplar's ideas of planetary rotation to how the sins of the father pass on to the son in an endless rotation. They also infused some deeper concepts into their music, like in Oubliette (Disappear) and Saturnus.
    Favorite lyrics:
    Your gross fabrication of pretense could bore,
    Yet still I fall victim to syntax omitted,
    Just shy of something I could understand.
    So blissful, I press on to the sound of the organs
    Playing their most convincing tunes
    As they serenade to the parade of paid-off parts.
    And now the only thing left to discuss is
    The details of this armistice.
    We've come to this agreement...
    Check my vitals.
    The truth is vile, but vital to this cause.
    I've been held hostage;
    A captive of this passive shell.
    Give me gravity, give me clarity, give me something to rely on.
    Tell me who's pulling the strings;
    Tell me who's that you move for.
    We're all puppets;
    We're all marionettes.
    These body parts are parts of plans,
    Passed by my hands. My hands shake through handshakes,
    Forsaken by my limbs.
    My limbs sing the hymns; The hymns of a tyrant
    In a crumbling pantheon
    As inhabitants will raise their fists and bid him to disarm.
    Tell me who's pulling the strings;
    Tell me who's that you move for.
    We're all puppets;
    We're all marionettes.
    Oh, how I've been teething
    In light of your misleading.
    You've caused this collapse
    Between the heart and the synapse.

    Brand New - They make pretty great lyrics as Well, just check out Limousine and Desgausser.
    Favorite lyrics:
    Goodbye you liar
    Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
    Then you think you will inspire

    Evans Blue - I would say these guys are just shy of being brilliant, but I included them because they are excellent. They are great at making ironic and contrasting comparisons.
    Favorite lyrics:
    And you were right, right from the start it took everythign you had, but you finally broke my... and now the old things will pass away. I saw your light once, did you see mine? But not all things will pass away. You turned your light off, so i turned mine away from your sadness. away from the nothing that you feel for me.
  • Albums I'm looking forward to this year!

    10 mars 2008, 17h08m

    Well I decided to jump on the journal bandwagon, so here are the albums I'm looking forward to.

    Anathallo told me they are planning on releasing an album called "Canopy Glow" later this spring/early summer, and judging by some videos of the new songs on Youtube, it sounds like it's going to be great. They just released a song from the album on their myspace, check it out.

    The Reign Of Kindo, an jazz/indie band that formed from This Day & Age, is releasing their first full-length, called Rhythm, Chord and Melody. They plan on releasing it August 26th.

    mewithoutYou is going to be releasing a new album later this fall as well. Brother, Sister was a great album, so I'm stoked for what they're coming up with next.

    Deas Vail announced that they were planning and recording a new record this year as well. They said more info on the album will be released soon.

    Anberlin's New Surrender will be released sometime this September.

    Snow Patrol is writing and demoing some new songs for their upcoming record!

    Manchester Orchestra stated in a AP.net interview that they are in the studio and will be releasing a new album sometime this year. Right Away, Great Captian!, Andy Hull's side project, is also releasing an album sometime soon.

    Shearwater just released their newest albumn, Rook and it is seriously album of the year material. You should all buy it!!

    Cool Hand Luke is releasing their newest album, The Sleeping House, on Oct. 14th! they are one of the best christian bands I've heard.

    More albums will probably be added to this list as I hear about them.
