  • Top 30 albums of 2007

Here's what you've all been waiting for!

Mostly done from memory as i figured that if i'd forgotten about an album then it wasn't really one of the best of the year. A few things that i'd like to have included just weren't strong enough overall (Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem, Stars), some were plain disappointing (Arcade Fire) and others i've only just bought so not fully digested them yet (Bruce Springsteen).

    03
    The Hold Steady
    - Boys & Girls In America (Vagrant/Full Time Hobby)

I'm a bit of a Johnny-come-lately on the Hold Steady - i was aware of Separation Sunday, but never felt compelled to investigate. I figured things would be the same with this album too, until i heard some of it in my local indie store (used to be great when i was at school, but a bit lacking now). Downloaded it (from eMusic!) and was blown away. I tried to describe it to George, but the best i could come up with was "the Afghan Whigs play Bruce Springsteen". That doesn't do it justice. The bit at the end of "First Night" is a personal favourite. I don't notmally pay much attention to lyrics, but they're so densely packed in on some of these songs it's great discovering a new favourite line every time you hear a song.

    02
    Hot Chip
    - The Warning (EMI)

I have to admit that Coming On Strong passed me by a little at first. I liked the idea of Hot Chip, and i loved the sleeve, but i couldn't love the music until i heard "You Ride, We Ride..." in Ewan's car. With 'The Warning' it was "Boy From School" that pulled me in - "I got, I got lost / You said you knew the way home" gets me every time. There's a definite progression between the two albums that leaves me excited for the third.

    01
    Adem
    - Love & Other Planets (Domino)

Beautiful second album from Adem Ilhan - similar to the first, but with the added confidence that seems to have been gained from a couple of years of mesmerising live shows. I have to admit that, unlike with Homesongs, i didn't really get into the record properly until i had heard it a few times, but my patience was rewarded and the songs are all like old friends now. I saw Adem 3 times this year, the absolute highlight being the second show at Fence Homegame, where we were sat right at the front in a tiny pub spilling with people. Amazing! Lovely guy too.

    Done at last!
