30 Day Song Challenge

Expect some of this to get long. Because… I like to talk. Yep.

Day 01 (03.15.11) – Your Favorite Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS_ux2H473I
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
I had a really hard time choosing between this and Sister Golden Hair by America, as they constantly rotate as my "favorite songs," but I really think this one has the edge right now. It's beautiful. The song has some kind of intense flow that I'm not sure has an equal. The way the music swirls around and the lyrics just flow right along with it. And from the very first few notes, you're hooked. You can't help it, but you are. And you just close your eyes and can perfectly picture everything happening in the song and it's just SO. DAMN. BEAUTIFUL. Plus the lyrics themselves are just so gorgeous, I can't stand it. I guess it would be considered the second verse that has always been a favorite, and the line that's always stood out the most to me is "Why are you so far away, she said, oh why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you? That I'm in love with you." It's just… the song is flawless. It sounds happy enough that I can listen to it all the time, but the lyrics have a melancholy feel to it that I can end up breaking down when I listen to it. THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL THINGS, OK. But yes, gorgeous and definitely the one that pops into my head first when I'm asked what my favorite song of all time is.

Day 02 (03.16.11) – Your least favorite song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0
JUST BECAUSE I'M TIRED OF HER DAMN FACE.

Ok, seriously, this is probably the closest thing to my least favorite song in my memory:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZsdDPd5gVA
Just because… uh… yeah, no. I could pretty much pick any Rascal Flatts song aside from like, five, but this is by far the worst. Everything about this song makes me cringe. But I mostly never needed to hear Gary say the word "cock", no matter the context. OK I JUST DON'T NEED TO HEAR THAT. MY VIRGIN EARS CAN'T TAKE IT. So yeah, this song sucks and I hate it and it killed me just to look it up on youtube for this.

Day 03 (03.17.11) – A song that makes you happy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5p1plMqGYQ
Nicki Minaj - Super Bass
Basically I listened to this song around 150 times in the first three days of discovering it. It's by far one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard, and definitely my favorite track by Her Minajesty, and yet it was only a bonus track on Pink Friday. Oh. And yes, I can pull a Taylor Swift/Selena Gomez and rap it. And I bump this in my car with the top down and rap it for all of the world to hear! And basically I feel really white when I do this, but whateva whateva I do what I want. So yeah, if there was any song right now to make me happy, this would be it.

Day 04 (03.18.11) – A song that makes you sad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0sy7y54XAE
Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter
Honestly, this was hard to pick. Not because I listen to some wide array of sad songs, because it's really the exact opposite. I mostly listen to songs that make me happy. Anyway, this song is tops for me. It's my favorite song by Rilo Kiley, who is one of my top five favorite bands. I'm not sure why I'm so attached to this one, but I am. I think I relate to it more than I'm willing to admit sometimes. Especially the "And sometimes when you're on, you're really fucking on, and your friends all sing along and they love you. But the lows are so extreme, that the good seems fucking cheap and it teases you for weeks in its absence." So… yep. It's just a great song that really digs deep into you.

Day 05 (03.19.11) – A song that reminds you of someone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USw8ZjoezFs
Jimmy Eat World - Authority Song
When my best friend turned 16 (oh good god she's gonna be 22 this year. I FEEL OLD), I made her a mixtape of all the songs we had ~shared~ in our two and a half years of friendship at that point. This was probably the biggest one for us. She's the one that made me a fan of it, as she was a huge JEW fan. I think a name of hers on AIM or something had something to do with Roy's Headphones at some point. So yeah, even though I don't talk to her as much anymore (we have one of those weird relationships where we can go months without talking and then pick right back up where we left off. THAT'S HOW COOL WE ARE), every time I listen to this song, I think of her. In fact, I think I'm going to text her now.

Day 06 (03.20.11) – A song that reminds of you of somewhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb_gzEqx8zA
Mates of State - For The Actor
So in 2009, we ended up going down to south Georgia a few times (the reasoning is quite sad, but yeah), and so a couple of times we went to Jekyll Island to chill at the beach. And for at least one trip, maybe both, I had made a couple of playlists for down there, and this ended up being our favorite. My sister and I would blast this on the way down, while we were there, and on the way back. It was good times. Now it's being used in cruise commercials, which is very… oh. But still, this song will always make me think of cruising down to the coast and hanging out at Jekyll Island for a fun afternoon. :)

Day 07 (03.21.11) – A song that reminds you of a certain event
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-dvTjK_07c
Usher - DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love
OK SO, this isn't like a favorite song of mine or anything. Honestly, the only time I really listen to it is when I happen to hear it on the radio. But the memories of last year that come with this song are so momentous, I had to use it for this. A friend of mine (xreignoflovex) and I went to a few Braves games together, and somehow this became our ~Going to a Braves game during a pennant race!~ song, as we'd always hear it on the radio while we were in the car. But the event this reminds me the most of would be NLDS Game 3. They played this several times at the stadium that day, and I was so, so excited to be at my first Braves playoff game so this song just reminds me of that. Honestly, from the time we stepped into the stadium that day and especially in the bottom of the 8th inning when Eric Hinske hit that two run homer… definitely one of the best few hours of my life. I tear up just thinking about it. And this song always brings me back to those few hours before we gave the lead up, and the stadium went from feeling like it was going to crumble from shaking so hard to stunned silence. SO YEAH THAT'S MY BORING BASEBALL STORY OF THE DAY. THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF THAT AND LOL AT THE LINE "MY LIFE IS A MOVIE AND YOU JUST TIVO."

Day 08 (03.22.11) – A song that you know all the words to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rog8ou-ZepE
Vanilla Ice - Ice, Ice Baby
Ok, for those of you who watch Parks and Recreation (which better be EVERYONE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET BECAUSE THE SHOW IS AMAZING AND PERFECT), in the cold opening to "Pawnee Zoo" (episode 2x01), Ron walks in to Leslie's office and says "Ok, here's the situation." and Leslie starts rapping pretty much the entirety of Parents Just Don't Understand? YEAH, THAT'S HOW I AM WITH THIS SONG. It's completely ridiculous, but I know every word, so here we go. I actually know every word to a lot of songs, so I purposefully went with the most ridiculous of them all.

Day 09 (03.23.11) – A song that you can dance to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAVlvCiySms
Britney Spears - Till The World Ends
There isn't another song on earth that makes me want to dance as much as this one right now. I don't go clubbing at like, all, but this song makes me want to just so I can dance to it. I'm praying that Turner Field will play the "Whoa oh oh oh" part during some Braves games this year so I can jam to it and end up on the dance cam or something. DON'T JUDGE OK. But it's perfect for it. :( And this is one song that I'll turn up in my car with my top down and dance and sing along with and people give me funny stares. But it's worth it.

Day 10 (03.24.11) – A song that makes you fall asleep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy0NySCmuFU
The Smiths - Asleep
It doesn't actually make me fall asleep, but it can help. I even had a playlist at one point named Sing Me To Sleep, after this song. Which was on it. I do feel it's kind of obvious, but isn't that the point? Plus the best nap I ever had involved The Smiths (not this song, but still).

Day 11 (03.25.11) – A song from your favorite band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npTz7NJri8Q
The Killers - Tidal Wave
I could have put my favorite song down (Read My Mind), but I feel like a lot of people know that song (because it's amazing, was released as a single, is perfect, etc), so I went with something a little more ~obscure~. It was an iTunes only bonus track from Day & Age, which is a shame because Tidal Wave is flawless. Should have been on the full album. It's definitely in my top 5 favorite songs by The Killers, it's just so beautiful. It makes me super emotional and I feel things when I listen to it. First of all, it has kind of a haunting quality to it. The beat is subtle, but off the chain. Seriously. And there's a couple of parts with strings and I just want to die. So beautiful. And not to mention the lyrics, which are just… ugh, I can't stand it. It tells a gorgeous story and there are some great lines, starting from the very first one. "He's always trouble with his non-complacence and shotgun eyes," the first time I heard it, I was just… whoa. And then "You say this life has given you nothing, you've got another thing coming…" I just get weepy stars in my eyes when I listen to this song. It makes me happy and I want to cry and I just love it. This is why The Killers are my favorite band.

Day 12 (03.26.11) – A song from a band you hate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yRme0C2pm
Soulja Boy Tell'Em - Turn My Swag On
Is there anyone more useless on the planet? No? Ok, thought so. Seriously. Soulja Boy is just… USELESS. But I'm putting this song here because it makes me think of Tom Haverford from Parks and Recreation. One of my favorite moments from the show ever, actually.
Runner up: Gucci Mane - Lemonade SERIOUSLY IT IS SO AWFUL. Only good part of that song is the piano. But everything else is just… awful.

Day 13 (03.27.11) – A song that is a guilty pleasure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kffacxfA7G4
Justin Bieber - Baby
I really have no shame when it comes to music. Seriously. I listen to the lamest stuff and I'm usually proud of it. And it's not that I'm particularly ashamed that I listen to this or anything, but… this is the closest thing to a guilty pleasure I could think of? I mean, really, whenever I hear that opening note and "OH. OH OH OH OHHHH." I can't help but jam to it. FUNNY STORY: One morning at work the mens department was a mess, so they had everyone up there before the store opened to clean it up a little. And this song came on, and you had a bunch of grown ass women in there folding Levi's to this song. IT WAS HILARIOUS. And of course I was jamming and I didn't care who knew it. My life is awesome.

Day 14 (03.28.11) – A song that no one would expect you to love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-opY4qcidFk
The Trammps - Disco Inferno
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Well. I kind of listen to anything and everything, so I think people pretty much expect me to at least like just about everything, but… basically, there's a reason disco died and it's because it sucks. Now I like certain disco influenced songs (Britney's Anticipating, Rilo Kiley's Breakin' Up), but as far as full on disco goes, I just don't do it. The closest I come is ABBA and even then I shy away from their full on disco tracks. HOWEVER, this song is the shit and I love it and it's like one of MAYBE five disco songs in my 20,000+ song library. Cool beans.

Day 15 (03.29.11) – A song that describes you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGXzlRoNtHU
DJ Khaled - All I Do Is Win (feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg & Rick Ross)
'Cause every time I step up in the building, everybody's hands go up… and they stay there. And they stay there. And they stay there. Up, down, up down, up down.

Ok, no, for real:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW6EP3-Q-DA
Kate Nash - Mouthwash
The first time I heard this song, it became my theme song. Just everything about it. "This is my mind, it goes over and over the same old lines. And this is my brain, its torturous analytical thoughts make me go insane." This describes me perfectly. Basically Kate Nash is my spirit animal and she writes all of the songs I wish I could write. I could basically play the entirety of Made of Bricks AND My Best Friend Is You and we'd basically have my life summed up in about 26 songs. But Mouthwash probably goes the furthest in describing me and how I tick, not necessarily my reactions/feelings. Not only that, but this song feels like my roots. Like, in all the ways I have changed since I was 17 (when this song came out), this song still describes me perfectly. I still use mouthwash, I only sometimes floss. Still have my family, and I still drink lots of tea. I've got nostalgic pavements, familiar faces, mixed up memories and favorite places.

Day 16 (03.30.11) – A song that you used to love but now hate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99j0zLuNhi8
Creed - With Arms Wide Open
Don't judge. Creed was kinda my jam when I was… stupid. And it doesn't help that most songs I've ever loved in my life (that I remember, anyway), I haven't really ended up hating. Even Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, etc. that I loved when I was 12-15, I still like on some sort of nostalgic level. But this… this is just not cute. It's just a dumb song sung by a dumb dude that looks dumb. Everything is just dumb.

Day 17 (03.31.11) – A song that you hear often on the radio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR6iYWJxHqs
Bruno Mars - Grenade
Ugh. I don't even listen to the radio that often, but any time I do, I'm guaranteed to hear this song at least once. EVEN NOW. IT'S BEEN OUT FOR LIKE EVERRRRRRRR. I quite like Bruno (I like his bffs B.o.B and Janelle Monae more, but whatever), but ugh. I'm so sick of this song. And it's silly, anyway. But he is damned right that I wouldn't catch a grenade, take a bullet straight through the brain, jump in front of a train, etc. for him.

Day 18 (04.01.11) – A song that you wish you heard on the radio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3yFdkD9sKA
Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend
Instead of going with something that really has no chance of getting played on the radio unless it's college radio (see: Fleet Foxes, Sleigh Bells), I'll go with something that could easily be played on radio and totally fit in, but for some reason radio doesn't seem to go for it. SO HERE'S ROBYN! As far as pop goes, she's probably the best out there. She's honestly what Lady Gaga should be right now, instead of the crazy that she really is (meaning, more fun music a la The Fame, but a little more grown up/matured). Robyn's Body Talk albums were some of the best albums - of any genre - last year. And this is a highlight that was actually just released as a single. Homegirl is touring with Katy Perry some this year, so hopefully it has a chance of going somewhere because this song is awesome. Straight up electronic pop in sound, but the song is so well written. The first time I really paid attention to this song, I really couldn't believe how amazing it is. It's written from the perspective of ~another girl~ but you really, truly sympathize with this girlfriend he's going to call and break up with. Definitely a favorite pop track from the past couple of years (along with Robyn's Hang With Me - which I prefer - but chose this since it was recently released as a single).

Day 19 (04.02.11) – A song from your favorite album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHQCC4TMZB4
Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News
Really, I think my ~favorite album~ is Sam's Town by The Killers, but I'm trying to not post an artist more than once, so this is just as good, if not better. I frickin' frackin' love Rumours. It's the bomb dot com. And this is the song that starts alllll of it off and I adore it and it's perfect. It's just amazing. The guitar and the beat and the harmonies and the lyrics, AND BASICALLY I LOVE THIS SONG AND ALBUM AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

Day 20 (04.03.11) – A song that you listen to when you’re angry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCj1KofDXAA
Kings of Leon - Crawl
Ok, so I can't really think of a song I specifically listen to when I'm angry, but… this works? I guess? It's kind of angry sounding and good to like… get anger out to. But it also helps me be a little happier because this was Tommy Hanson's intro/at bat song during the 2009 season, so it makes me think of ~my man~ and I can't help but smile. Trufax: When I saw Kings of Leon in September I kept hoping to see Tommy there, since I know he's a fan (him and other fav Kris Medlen went to their show in October of '09) and the Braves totally had an afternoon home game that day… but alas, no gorgeous six-foot-six mustachioed ginger man to be found. I was sad. /cool semi-baseball related story of the day, bro.

Day 21 (04.04.11) – A song that you listen to when you’re happy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxLhytQ67fs
Cyndi Lauper - Goonies 'R' Good Enough
Yep. I even went through a spell last year where I totally listened to this song on repeat a bazillion times. But it's definitely one of the songs I listen to when I'm happy. HOW CAN IT NOT BE?!? I mean, come on. It's from The Goonies, it's Cyndi Lauper, and it has a bomb ass catchy chorus that's just HAPPY. I mean, it totally makes me do this every time I listen to it:
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lj5pg1ldxk1qaxtku.gif
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. I'm listening to it now and I'm just so happy.
Runners Up (because I listen to a lot of songs when I'm happy, ok): Solange - Sandcastle Disco, Ke$ha - Crazy Beautiful Life (don't judge)

Day 22 (04.05.11) – A song that you listen to when you’re sad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vHi83LTQjU
Marina & The Diamonds - Shampain
This song is perfect~. It's upbeat and sounds happy enough to listen to all the time, but when you really listen to it, you realize how much it makes you want to wallow in your sadness with a bottle of champagne. I relate to Marina's songs a lot more than I wish to admit, especially this one. But her whole album is like that, really. It's oddly delightful to lyrics that are often about bouts of social anxiety and depression set to catchy music. So ho hum. But yes, Shampain has totally become my sad song of late.
Runner up: Blues Traveler - Hook, just because it's the opposite of Shampain. It sounds sad, but the whole song is about how the song isn't about anything in particular. Brilliant.

Day 23 (04.06.11) – A song that you want to play at your wedding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Af372EQLck
Johann Pachelbel - Canon In D
I honestly have no idea what song I want played at my wedding as a first dance type thing, so instead we're going with what I WILL walk down the aisle to. The Bridal Chorus is so incredibly lame and passe and quite frankly I hate it. Wagner was so much better than that. I mean, come on, that same man that rode Ride of the Valkyries also wrote Bridal Chorus? SMH. So basically, this song is beautiful and perfect and one of only two songs I know I definitely want played at my wedding (the other being Mendelssohn's Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream). Yep.

Day 24 (04.07.11) – A song that you want to play at your funeral
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv8gIePk7Kc
This is David Nevue's version of It Is Well With My Soul, but quite frankly I don't give a damn how it's done at my funeral, I just want it done. It's perhaps my favorite hymn ever (Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is the only other one I would give that honor to), and it's so so beautiful. Everything about it. And it means so much to me, so it would be perfect at my funeral.

Day 25 (04.11.11) – A song that makes you laugh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpN60KKBAjc
Haddaway - What Is Love
Because of
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVYzxxgKXTY
basically. Every time I hear What Is Love on the radio (which is quite often since a radio station here has Big 90's Weekends all the time!), I have to bob my head like in this commercial and it makes me giggle.

Day 26 (04.12.11) – A song that you can play on an instrument
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_oLCJIYOVU
Regina Spektor - Raindrops
It's been a while since I played it all the way through, but yep. This used to be like, my ~go to song~ whenever I sat down at the piano. Only reason I chose it (that and it being my favoritest Regina Spektor song), since I can play a lot of songs on the piano. And I did purposefully choose something ~popular~. But yes! This song means so much to me, and I love playing it. It's simple, but incredibly beautiful.

Day 27 (04.13.11) – A song that you wish you could play
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaU6m15hj_0
Lady Gaga - Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) (Acoustic)
Continuing with the pop selections, because again… who cares about uber advanced classical or spiritual pieces? Anyway, I'm sure I could play this if you gave me the time to sit down and figure it out and/or gave me sheet music. Whatever. This is pretty much my favorite Gaga song, aside from Alejandro. And I love the original Eh Eh, but this one is SO amazing. I love the classical feel in spots, but then it has kind of a polka rhythm and beat in the verses. It's so frickin' frackin' fun and sassy and heartfelt and I MISS WHEN GAGA WAS ADORABLE AND DID STUFF LIKE THIS. But yeah, I wish I could play this. Maybe someday! When I have time or something.

Day 28 – A song that makes you feel guilty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YKqQuqExoE
Glee Cast - Borderline / Open Your Heart (Glee Cast Version)
First of all, a song that makes me feel guilty? About what, exactly? So I chose this because I like it better than the original Madonna versions, I think. DON'T JUDGE. Basically, last year when the show was actually like… good, I loved Glee. I did. Aaaand basically, I'm a pretty huge Finn/Rachel shipper. I MEAN I WOULD READ FANFIC EVERY NIGHT. … that's another reason this song makes me feel guilty, I guess? But yeah, so, this episode was amazing and I watched it like 20 times the week after it came out and this is by far my favorite song from the episode. THE TENSION BETWEEN THEM IS SO AMAZING, IT'S INSANE. And look at how he's looking at her. Sigh. I miss this, show. I miss it. SO YES THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE DEEP DOWN INSIDE I REALLY STILL LOVE GLEE (THE FIRST SEASON ANYWAY) AND I LOVE FINN/RACHEL AND I READ FANFIC AND I LIKE THIS A LITTLE MORE THAN MADONNA'S ORIGINALS BECAUSE OF FINN/RACHEL. YEP.

Day 29 – A song from your childhood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PycKSdKG_74
The Supremes] - Come See About Me
I was raised on The Supremes. My mom always listened to either oldies or soft rock in the car when I was growing up, and my sisters and I always gravitated toward The Supremes back then. Still love them today, but they definitely soundtracked my childhood.

Day 30 (05.12.11 ... lol what. I did so good for the first like, 25 and then I got busy and it went to hell~) – Your favorite song at this time last year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeAgLIaHj0M
She & Him - Thieves
Ugh, words cannot explain my love for this song. Of course Volume Two was my favorite album of last year, but this was probably also my favorite track. Definitely my favorite song from last spring. It's the most heartbreaking, beautiful song. And I love it. Everything from the sweeping late 50's/early 60's kinda country vibe with just a hint of surfer pop of the music to Zooey's vocals and the lyrics… oh my, the lyrics. So perfect. Sometimes I can't help but cry at the song. Especially the bridge. "We two are makers, just made this mess. Two broken hearts don't beat any less." AH KILL ME NOW. Just amazing. I love everything about the song and it's one of my favorites to put my top down to and drive down some long, winding road and just sing it. And feel it. This song makes me feel everything. And it's beautiful.
