Hi there. A friend of mine runs another group on here called The Last FM Song Contest. Come along and check it out. The members submit songs for the contest then we all comment and vote on each other's songs and a winner is declared. We're currently on contest 15. It's good fun with a good bunch of people and you may well discover some great new artists to add to your collection. :-)

Hey, Mabel, y'doing alright? I noticed the link to your tumblr got fixed, and since quite a chunk of it has racism/cultural appropriation and so forth as a theme... this might be a bit of a silly question but I'm on a LucasArts adventure game binge now, and I wanted to ask if you think Grim Fandango counts as an example of cultural appropriation? I unfortunately haven't played that game yet (it runs on the GrimE engine, and I have every LucasArts game except two that can be run in ScummVM, so I'll have to get it separately, and hope it works. Setting up all the games to work on Win7 was a bit frustrating.), but thought I might as well ask first. (Oh, and... er, did your birthday happen in the meantime?)

I just wanted to say thanks for taking part in the group. It actually means quite a lot to me that people are wanting to get involved.

Why, thank you. You have great music taste yourself. Very interesting, broad music collection you have here. I might snoop through your library and see if I can find anything new. =)

Good luck working those things out. I also have no idea what to do afterwards, but I don't know, maybe a masters/graduate program would be a way to bid time if necessary? Depends which kind of Swans you enjoy. Their early material from Filth to Holy Money is mostly High Octane Nightmare Fuel, aggressive noise rock that's largely dominated by Michael Gira, but starting from Children of God they began to mellow out, adopt a more diverse style and made Jarboe more of an equal contributor (also, that album has "In My Garden", which is an excellent song and almost This Mortal Coil-ish). I honestly prefer the 1990s run of albums from White Light from the Mouth of Infinity to Soundtracks for the Blind. I'd recommend starting either with The Great Annihalator, or if you have enough free time, the double album Soundtracks for the Blind. I should probably get the new EA album too, I completely forgot about it...

Otherwise, yeah, I'm doing alright but a bit tired - I stayed up kinda late last night to finish recording guitars on a cover of "Agent Orange" even though I had class early today, and I've been starting to make accounts on certain job placement websites because I figured second term of second year is as good a time as any to start panicking that I have no idea what I'm doing after university. I hope you're doing okay as well, and... well, I'm currently in a Tori binge, but I guess I should pencil in another Curve one for later. Been a while since I listened to them...

Yay St. Vincent, Curve and Pixies! XD Y'seem to be missing Bossanova though, jussayin'. I guess that's where we're different, because my favourite Pixies albums are Bossanova and Trompe le Monde (not to diss Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, I just prefer those, is all). I started watching BTVS too a while back but I, uh, kinda ended up stopping somewhere in the 3rd season because I got distracted by my workload, so maybe I'll pick it up again in the next break (just have to remember where I left off...). I know, right? By the time I got to that disgusting fuckhead who said she was "asking for it" (my only thought on seeing it was something like "I HOPE YOU DIE IN A FUCKING GAS CHAMBER YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT". I think that's a reasonable reaction to somebody pretending that somebody can "ask for it".), I felt *bad* about liking EA because it meant I had something in common with these... these... I don't even know what to call them... monsters?

I'm so addicted to T + Björk! I can't get into a Feist phase because of them... I love both albums. I loved Biophilia instantly. Night of Hunters took some time, though. They're definitely going on my Best of 2011 list. Everything's fine. I just have a lot of schoolwork. -_-

"I love the classical inspired direction T took for the new album, it sounds dark, majestic, passionate and epic." IKR. I've been longing for a non-solstice classical-inspired album ever since MG came out.

Also: holy shit, Tori has a B-sides compilation? Whoo! Thought she didn't for some reason. Is it as comprehensive as the Pixies'? Or... shit, I almost said Incesticide, but that one's comprehensiveness isn't that good (it doesn't have Curmudgeon, I still can't decide whether I prefer the BBC Radio or the B-side version of Aneurysm, Downer's repeated from Bleach, it doesn't have D-7, neither the Here She Comes Now cover from the split single with the Melvins nor Oh, the Guilt from the Jesus Lizard split single. So yeah, it's not very comprehensive. I had to swipe chunks of With the Lights Out, which is mostly demos). I gues I'll shut up now. :)

    5. Complete B Sides! Exactly What It Says on the Tin: all the B-sides of their singles. Some of the tracks occasionally make it clear *why* they were B-sides instead of album tracks, but it's still worth it tho': the Pixies are awesome enough that even their slightly below-par material just fuckin' slays 90% of bands out there, there's some interesting/funny oddities (a live cover of In Heaven from Eraserhead, the theme from NARC [yeah, the arcade game!], the instrumental Letter to Memphis, the countryish pisstake Build High), covers (Neil Young's I've Been Waiting for You + Winterlong, The Yardbirds' Evil Hearted You, in Spanish!) and some good stuff! Like the slower, sparser Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), which loses the Lyrical Dissonance but sounds extra sad (the closest the Pixies got to unplugging one of their tracks), Into the White (<3 Kim's vox), the really catchy Manta Ray, the really frantic Weird at My School, more faux-blues stuff with Santo, and so on. Really worth it!

  • PartySanCTG

    4. Trompe le Monde! Francis says they got heavier this time around thanks to recording next door to Ozzy Osbourne. Not sure how much truth there is in that, but he's got a point: Norton still keeps the whole summery space-surfy sound I love so much - Eric Drew Feldman makes his first appearance here playing keyboards (went on to play on Francis' first two solo albums, quite a few PJ Harvey ones), but the band does kind of noticeably have fewer slow/mellow-ish stuff this time around (The Navajo Know, Lovely Day) in favour of teh hardness. They do compensate by having a just as high hit ratio, though: there's the just plain badassery of stuff like the furiously fast Planet of Sound, Alec Eiffel, a sped-up cover of The Jesus And Mary Chain's Head On, the cowbell-using uni-diss of U-Mass and Subbacultcha, and the melodic awesome of stuff like Palace of the Brine, Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons, and Motorway to Roswell, which SHOULD have been the last track. Proceed here after Bossanova.

  • PartySanCTG

(sorry, interrupted by dinner) 3. Bossanova! Hot damn, this is my first fave! Norton this time makes the guitars shinier and adds a bit more echo/reverb to get this futuristicky space-surf-psychedelic-grunge sound that, put simply, is totally fuckin' cool. It's kinda ironic that I love this album so much because it's the one where Francis went all dickhead and didn't let Kim contribute songs, but can't argue with that awesome production. Every song's good, and for me its hits ratio is outright scary: the cover of Cecilia Ann (space surfing music awesomeness!), the über-riffage of Rock Music, Velouria's psych-anthemity, Ana's mellow Spanish influences (it sounds like the soundtrack to sunset on a beach!), the Talking Headsy Dig for Fire (so good I forgive the cliched desire/fire rhyme), Down to the Well's midtempo rockin', Stormy Weather, and of course, Havalina's similarly mellow, slightly-Spanish beach at sunset vibe. I love this album so much, I'd say start here.

  • PartySanCTG

    2. Doolittle! Gil Norton comes aboard. He's much less of a spartan, Luddite fuckhead than Albini, so the production's slightly more polished, which makes the guitars sound fuller and the drums benefit from the compression (I never get why Albini's so praised for his skill in recording drums - they usually just sound dead to me!). Slightly more Nightmare Fuelly when Francis showcases his awesome lungpower (TAAAAAAAME, Debaser), there's a few less surf-punk freakouts this time (Crackity Jones) in favour of the pop-melodies-played-by-serial-killers vibe (No. 13 Baby, There Goes My Gun, Dead, the love-song parody La La Love You), and even some weird bits (Mr. Grieves starts with a mock-reggae part, Silver's slide guitars and faux-Western atmosphere). I'd say the best tracks are Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, the really Beatleish Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven (a ballad about pollution! With strings!), and the somehow hilarious Hey. I'd say it's even better than Surfer Rosa!

    juillet 2011
  • PartySanCTG

(I also created the Pixies' TV Tropes page, so this shouldn't be hard) 1. Surfer Rosa! Produced by Steve Albini, who gives it the whole heavy guitars and slamming drums sound he's known for, presumably to disguise the often nice and catchy melodies? It's probably their funniest album, thanks to stuff like Tony's Theme, Oh My Golly!, Broken Face, etc, but it also gets really wacked-out in places (Something Against You). Where Is My Mind? and Gigantic are the most famous songs, and there's a re-recording of Vamos with a longer bridge and Francis' "You fuckin' DIE, I said!" at the start, but I'm very partial to River Euphrates, and how Cactus combines a "classic"-ish rock 'n roll riff with twisted lyrics, and the kinda funny "P! I! X! I! E! S!" chant in the middle. I usually start with albums chronologically, and it's good, but it's not my favourite.

Hey, thanks, Star! (I'll go with "Star". "Starx" sounds like the sort of thing I'd come up with for alien names in the story I'm working on, lulz). Man, everybody seems to be more active on their vacations than me. Like, one of my former flatmates is now working as a volunteer in Mauritius (don't remember what she was studying, sadly). And I get to faff about the house, write stuff, and listen to music or watch stuff. How very unexciting. Do I ever! The cool thing 'bout the Pixies is that they have a really small discography: all you need is the Come On Pilgrim EP, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, Trompe le Monde and Complete "B" Sides and that's it! And the neat thing is Surfer Rosa's been reissued bundled with the EP already a while ago, so that kinda cuts out the middleman. Now I'll just break yer shoutbox with another wall'o'text about the albums themselves!

  • PartySanCTG

Hey Starx! (mind if I say "Starx"? I have no other idea of how to abbreviate it...) I guess it's been a while since I said anything, sorry 'bout that, I'm kinda bad at being consistent. So! You're on vacation? What's it like? Also, I'm thinking of getting into Scarling because I read somewhere that they're shoegazey... is that true?

I love your taste as well. I also identify a lot with Tori. I've been listening to her since high school. I also hate the Kate Bush fans that accuse Tori of ripping off of her. I love Kate, but she is not the goddess of everything. I also hate racism, homophobia, and music elitists. I get crap from most people about my music since a lot of people don't like female musicians. Anyway, I hope you have a good one!
