Oh man! There can't be many bands that actually sound worse when they pick up their instruments, but the Beastie Boys
headline performance at Bestival
was a surprising let-down.
If I'd paid money just to se them I'd have been massively disappointed. You see, unlike secret guests Madness
, who went down a storm, they insisted on playing their recent all-instrumental funk rubbish instead of sticking to the hits. This is probably because unlike Madness, who have 'retired' and earn a nice little pension playing to adoring nostalic audiences, they're still labouring under the impression that their new material isn't indulgent tosh.
I don't normally begrudge a change in direction for a band, but this is too much and they must be stopped. The crowd were leaving in droves. One angry Ghostbuster next to me waved his beer-filled Supersoaker in the air and yelled "hey guys, we wanna FIGHT for our RIGHT to SOMETHING!". But it seems the Boys were not listening.
Still they did play Intergalactic
and somehow that made everything alright.
