25 jui. 2006, 4h03malright, here are some things i've been enjoying a lot lately
yeah... i've been loving that raw voice for the last few days... it's the top played artist for last week (not by much) and i've listend to a few albums (on CD...)
The White Stripes
between the simplicity of it all added with the whole band covering them thing... i've been quite enjoying the seven nation army recently. very simplistic but powerful.
there's something about singing Paranoid Android driving down the road at night that compells me. it's scary good, but just plain scary as well.
wow, i'm sooooo cool

24 mars 2006, 5h27mokay, a bizzare thing just happened to me recently
i went to a show at Starr Hill in Charlottesville, VA. I was going to see "ZOSO", a band who makes a living doing covers of the LEDGENDARY band Led Zeppelin. sounds normal, right? it gets weird.
so, i had seen the show once before. the guitar player the first time had long, wavy black hair, and looked exactly like the 1970's era version of Led Zeppelin. this band comes out, and the guitar player is not a semi-youthful man, but is in fact a man in his late 50's. he has a beer belly, and a receding hairline. They open up the show with Rock and Roll. 4 songs later, upon the AMAZING version of Heartbreaker, and i start to realize what an amzing guitar player this is. i think to myself, "who cares if this guy looks nothing like Jimmy Paige, he sounds AMAZING!" my friend Dennis agreed with me, but he was under the influence, so it didn't matter. "it's the guitar player's show," he told me affirmatively.
unfortunately, do to lack of legal driving restrictions, we were forced to leave at 11:00 PM, only one hour and 15 minutes into the show. i told my dad on the way home about the new guitar player, and how he was different from the guitar player at the last show. "the bassist and the guitar player must have switched," i reasoned. that must be it.
tonight, i was not out watching a great rock and roll show, like last night. the large black X's have started to wash off my hands, and the smoke was starting to wear off my clothes from the smokey music hall i was in last night. i was sitting at home, flipping channels, when something caught my eye. SNL was on the "E!" entertainment channel, and i heard that crappy version of Kashmir as done by the musical VIRTUSO that is P. Diddy. wait.... Puff Daddy? or is it just Diddy now? i've lost track. he was the musical guest on SNL, and he brought his good old buddy Jimmy Paige along for the ride.
this all makes sense now.
all the members of the Led Zeppelin cover band show were in costume. except for the guitar player. he knew all the solos perfectly, and was older than everybody else on stage.
i don't know how, and i don't know why, but Jimmy Paige was in Charlottesville, VA. last night. i can't really believe it either. i just know that i'm now 99.9% sure of this after all of this thinking i've done about it. it's too much of a coincedence. i'm gonna go do more research on this. please comment on this, and rationalize it for me.
19 mars 2006, 4h48mhmm.. i just read a journal about a dream band (in a weird way, like an anti-dream band), it got me thinking, what would the best dream band consist of?
okay, we'll start off with a vocalist:
if we want a nice classic voice, we could go with Mick Jagger voice(The Rolling Stones}, or maybe a rodger daltry-esque voice (The Who. yeah, those are good.
but is it really a voice like that that i would prefer? i'm very confused about this process. who else to go for? a smoother, pop-ier voice would also work. in this case, a person like Adam Levineof Maroon 5 wouldn't be such a bad choice, would it? not really sure. must check dream band handbook.
Lead guitar anyone?
Okay, I could easily bore you with a list of really good guitarists that have been thrown around so much as the greatest guitar players of all time that i have no reason to waste your time. but, i'm going to list a few anyway
he's jimi fucking hendrix
he can make feedback sound good
you couldn't hear the rest of the band
he'd get all the money, anyways
oh yeah, and he's six feet under. i've been to his grave site, and he's not going anywhere.
a proficient, experimental guitar player for the LEDGENDARY band Led Zeppelin
blistering leads and great technique are an understatement
the constant fear of overdosing
it'd be hard to pass through customs with him on board
guitarist for the Rolling Stones
still playing today
he's clean (wink, wink)
if mick's not there, he's not on board
again, passing through customs would be extremely difficult
okay, i'll stop boring you
some more interesting choices would be people with more unique styles. For example, i'm sure Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead would be a GREAT choice. he could also play lots of random and experimental instruments, too (has anybody seen the performance of The National Anthem on Saturday Night Live? it's amazing, and i'm still trying to figure out exactly what he's playing. is he transmitting the sound of a string played similarly to slide guitar over an FM signal and sending out the signal from the radio? it's fucking genius, whatever it is. it blows my mind). also, i'm sure John Mayer would be a good choice. not only can he play and write pop-y acoustic stuff, but that man can play the blues like the pros. (see John Mayer Trio and see why. also, watch the crossroads guitar festival DVD, he's a headlining act next people like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. damn.). Buddy Guy wouldn't be a bad choice either.
now we're getting to the rythym (sp?) section:
this category goes almost hands down to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. and why wouldn't it? he's fucking amazing. he can play the best slap bass i've ever heard, and he generally kicks ass. go Flea...
hmm... can't really think of anybody else that compares. Maybe Metallica's Cliff Burton would fill that role, but he's a little too HARDCORE for the rest of the band members, and wouldn't get along too well.
remind me if i was missing anybody in this section.
makin' funky beats, DRUMS:
certainly anybody that isn't Meg White (The White Stripes) would be a great choice for drums. no, i take that back. the drummer for Def Leppard would be a bad choice also (mainly becuase he only has ONE ARM! THAT'S RIDICULOUS! i'm gonna end up going with....
wait for it...
Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones) or Ginger Baker (Cream). both of them are there for obvious reasons. hm... this band is going to be like The Grateful Dead and have 2 drummers. sweet! double the rythym (and i can't spell that word, still)
okay, here's the final lineup
Adam Yauch of The Beastie Boys just for fun, with backup vocals from Thom Yorke(damn, that one came out of left field).
i'm gonna go with John Mayer playing a mix between lead and rythym guitar, something he can do really well live. Actually, he'll be a louder rythym guitar, with someone like Ronnie Wood on lead guitar. Wood won't be playing the entire time, however, and ii feel like he knows when not to play.
Flea is still the best choice, because of his unique style of playing and his insane stage antics. he's a role model for all bass players who want to grow up and do insane amounts of I.V. drugs.
TWO DRUMMERS! WHOA! Charlie Watts and Ginger Baker. The benefit of this is that if one dies suddenly of a stroke, we'll still have a drummer! yay!
Stevie Wonder, because our band is an equal opportunity employer. take that, NAACP!
Eric Clapton, because every band has to have Eric Clapton in it at some point. how many fucking bands is that man in? somebody answer me that.
Bob Dylan is the perfect person to play tambourine!
hey, mr. tambourine man!
write a song and put it on another b-side album!
questions? comments? fill out the form below. leave me a few!
5 mars 2006, 5h07malright, so i just got through watching several Radiohead music videos, and i thought about what each of them really meant. here's a lovely list of thoughts for you
i read in Rolling Stone that this song was written about "the dullest fucking people on earth. this really prevails during the video, as people go through their lives, as weird as they are, and continue to be stuck in their own little boring world, as if nothing is even happening around them. i especially like the gratuitous animated nudity throughout the entire video, and how none of the characters even gave a second thought to this. look at the world around you, and how interesting and different it really is.
this video and song i'm still a little clueless. i'm guessing by the title it has something to do with pointless celebration, or something like that. i really have no idea.
i think this one's fairly simple to see, especially after seeing the video. in the lyrics are a message of uncertainty and doubt, swallowed by depressing topics, taken very lightly. This is a song with a satirical view of blind optimism, but a nice inspirational message and hopeful backbone. the video depicts a shot of Thom Yorke's head being drowned in a giant fishbowl-esque helmet contraption. the water line slowly raises from the bottom to the top of the helmet, but eventually the water recedes and he goes on again as if nothing happened before. inspirational.
one of my favorite videos and songs of radiohead, this song is fairly cryptic and complex. this was not on accident, because i'm sure the point of this video was to leave people wondering. while a man is walking down the street, he suddenly stops dead in his tracks and falls to the ground. another man trips over this man's body and questions why he is lying on the ground, but the man will not tell him. finally, after a crowd of about 50 people have surrounded this man, he tells the crowd why he is lying on the ground. the camera pans the crowd, only to show that all of these people are also lying on the ground, also. an obvious conclusion that one could draw is that the more people know, the more there is to fear, or something of that nature (a.k.a. ignorance is bliss). this is what i believe this video is about, but another theory one could draw is that what you don't know can't hurt you, and people should go through their lives normally, and not in fear.
that's all i got to watch tonight, but leave some comments about alternative theories. thanks!
