brazilian albums that you have to listen to at least once before you die

9 déc. 2006, 16h42m

yet another list, i know. so, yeah, these are the awesomest brazilian albums of all times, in my opinion (in alphabetical order):

Wave (actually, you should listen to anything by jobim at some point of your life)

Baden Powell & Vinícius De Moraes - os afro-sambas de baden powell & vinícius de moraes

Caetano Veloso [1967]

Caetano Veloso [1969]

Caetano Veloso [1971]

Transa (i could put at least 3 more caetano albums, (the guy is god) but i think that's enough already)

Cartola [1974]

Construção (genius, genius)

Elis Regina e Tom Jobim - elis & tom (for those who don't know, tom jobim = antônio carlos jobim. this is the album with the classic version of águas de março (waters of march); just beautiful)

Gal Costa [não identificado]

Expresso 2222

Gilberto Gil [1968] (probably my favorite tropicália album)

Gilberto Gil [1969]

A Música Livre de Hermeto Pascoal

Amoroso/Brasil (i should listen to joão gilberto more. quoting miles davis: "he could read a newspaper and sound good")

A Tábua de Esmeralda (you should probably check "áfrica brasil", too. i think it's a little bit overrated, though)

Jacarandá

Clube Da Esquina (it's actually by Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges, but last.fm is lame. this is one of the greatest albums of all times, brazilian or not, btw)

Acabou Chorare

Os Mutantes

Mutantes

Rogério Duprat - a banda tropicalista do duprat (duprat was the producer of tropicália; some call him the "brazilian george martin", but i think he was more inventive than him. this is a cover album, with stuff ranging from Flying to jobim and de moraes' chega de saudade, all with a tropicália touch)

Racional (brazilian funky stuff. it was cooler when it hadn't been released on cd, though ;)

Estudando o samba (todos os olhos, his s/t and 2006's estudando o pagode are also worth checking out)

p.s.: check Hermeto Pascoal playing glass bottles (!!!!) and flute (even when it's under water), while in the water:

Os Mutantes are one of my favorite bands and I think I'm getting that 1967 self-titled Caetano Veloso album today, so that's another one to mark off the list. I'm gonna have to look into the rest of these.

The 1970 and 1971 Tim Maia albums are better than Racional in my opinion, but they're all gorgeous.

Gil e Jorge is pretty cool, but is not the best album they ever done... Actually they done lots of great stuff by themselves.

But I think the Jorge Ben list is a bit small here.. you should have listed at least 5 titles... the guy is a genious.

Everybody should listen to Samba Esquema Novo, Negro e Lindo, Jorge Ben (1969) and Africa Brasil.

PS:Catequizar gringo e' foda sempre tem uma mala que acha que Marisa Monte e Ivete Sangalo e' legal... Foda e chegar a conclusao que depois de 79 a, musica brasileira foi pro saco.

Great list, not only because there's some of my fave brazilian albums ever here, but also because there's several I don't really know.

To any list like this, it's tempting to ask, But what about x? But if all the Xs, Ys, and Zs were here, then it would lose the big virtue of being short. I.e., I'm going to listen to Racional and Rogerio Duprat, because you put him on a list that has lots of my faves, but doesn't even include certain albums by Caetano, Jorge Ben's Africa-Brasil, etc. (I'm not sure it's possible, however, to over-rate anything this guy did before 1980, except maybe by putting Gil e Jorge over his other work. But that's just me.) In any case, it's good to have these But what about...s too.

I absolutely agree about Clube da Esquinha, and while I like lots of stuff that these guys have done I'd trade all of it away for just this one album.

thanks for the great list indeed.. will check out those unknown to me. i'd wonder what a brazil expert thinks about arthur verocai. why is he still so unknown.. the self-titled lp from 1973 (i think) is right up there with clube da esquina in my opinion. geek out!

    great list.

but what about joão gilberto's early albums? in particular, i think that "chega de saudade" (1959) is brilliant.
also, i find that "tropicalia" (1968) could have a place in the list.

chega de saudade is good, i prefer his 1973 self-titled (the one which starts with águas de março).

about tropicália, even though i recognize its significance, it's kind of a "best of". most of the songs that are there are on some album on this list.

dimdimbullet, i don't know arthur verocai, but i'll check it out, thanks (answering you more than a year later).

caetanosfur, maybe i should have put jorge ben's 69 s/t, and maybe even samba esquema novo, but i think áfrica brasil is kinda boring, actually. i think it's too discoesque for me. to be honest, though, i haven't given it another chance in a while, so maybe i should.

anyways, thank you all for your feedback (:

but thanks for the feedback, you all (:
