the Joan Baez concert was everything i hoped it would be & more!
when i got to the venue i went to the merch table first and finally met jim. the first thing he said was, 'do you know who joan baez is?!' i said YES! and he said 'do you like her music?!' (lol he was so funny i guess he thought i was dragged along by my parents or something? newsflash, my parents dont even like joan that much. i'm the one that does! the kid! isn't it supposed to be the other way around? :D) i also told him i would be at san diego tomorrow night too and he said for me to stop by and it was great to see me since joan loves her young fans! …yeah, i know that! ;)
joanie came out with very little fanfare… just walked out with the boys as we went crazy. she was really really funny and adorable. she kept having trouble with the sound system and also the guitars (she kept having to switch for new ones?) and she kept joking around about it. here's the setlist! i don't think i forgot anything, but the order isn't right:
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
The Scarlet Tide (her stunning Elvis Costello cover)
With God On Our Side
Caleb Meyer
Joe Hill
Sing Me Back Home (omg i almost died… REALLY was not expecting this one)
Christmas In Washington
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot (a'capella)
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Stand By Me
Finlandia (a'capella)
Jerusalem
Diamonds And Rust
Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word
Gracias A La Vida
Amazing Grace (a'capella)
amazing grace was the most amazing (sorry) by far. because we all sang along and the room was like humming, and it was so beautiful. it was very moving. but every song was perfect, guitar complications aside. joan sounded great as usual. i was so happy for gracias, even though she skipped a verse. :D at least she did the pies cansados verse! (my favorite)
after the show, since i am not part of the listserv group that gets to go backstage, i was waiting out in the frigid air behind the building by the tour bus with about twenty others. it was bigger before but a lot of people froze to death and left. it was just us dedicated ones! finally, after waiting about 40 minutes, joan came out. i immediately felt bad because everyone descended on her like bloodhounds and it really bothered me, because she looked overwhelmed. everyone was surrounding her and like trying to shake her hand. so i stepped back because even though i wanted to say hi and thank her, i didn't want to overstep my bounds especially since she was uncomfortable being surrounded by all those people. anyway, the best part was when she CAME TO ME. she moved away from everyone else and came up to me and i just said 'thank you so much joan' and she took my hand and smiled and said 'thank you!' and kind of half hugged me. it was wonderful. i don't want to flatter myself too much but i think maybe she sensed my good energy? i mean it is true i was the only one not accosting her. well anyway i'm just glad i got to see her and thank her, that is all i wanted. it was such a great show, despite the obnoxious people in my section, and here's to hoping tomorrow night is even more perfect!!!
