-always under construction-
As literature holds a very special place in my heart, even more so than music (after all, I want to write for a living), I want to share my favorite works of literature with anyone that is interested. Formerly I had a list in the side panel of my page on last.fm, but that was fairly awkward and only inhibited people from quickly scrolling to the bottom of my page.
Therefore, I am transferring those images here, and also adding some new ones. As I encounter new works of breathtaking prose, I will continue to edit this journal.
About my literary tastes: they vary, but are rooted in science-fiction. In particular, epic science-fiction, the genre that I primarily want to write in. Epic science-fiction includes but is not limited to tales of sweeping, vast empires; complex, world-shattering religions; strange, alien new worlds; brave, courageous people; bold, innovative technology; and most importantly of all a literary scope that will humble even the most imaginative reader. Writers such as Herbert, Heinlein, and Card have the most influence on my prose.
I also enjoy reading religious literature, mostly of a Christian nature. Here I am not talking of religious manuscripts containing rules and regulations, but heart-wrenching prose that explores the nature of the soul, man's reaction towards religious authority, the depravity of human nature, and issues of morality and mortality. This subgenre of literature is interwoven into many genres.
Finally, I have a soft spot for the classics, particularly Russian classics. I maintain that Russian prose is one of the most beautiful on the planet. My writing is probably in part influenced by great writers such as Pushkin, Tolstoy, and Dostoyevsky.
Just a few things I enjoy. Not all things on this list will fit into these categories. I've tried to sum up the novels in a sentence or phrase (a definite impossibility). I want to attract your attention without writing a synopsis that gives away much of the work. For series, I have included the picture of my favorite novel. Without further ado, here's my list. Leave a comment if you like a novel, have a recommendation for me to read, etc.
