That's nice. I'm from Kolding, a town slightly smaller than Ann Arbor, in the southern Jutland.

I love how you came to the conclusion of following the "straight edge" movement/lifestyle. From your point of view it would seem only natural. I have seen Synedoche,New York. As a matter of fact I have seen almost anything from Kauffman. The sermon was my favorite part. especially all that talk about not knowing what affects us/wasting time with little things and hoping for nothing. It fitted the overall theme very well. The decaying element in that movie (the physical death stuff) was for me the most depressing stuff.

One last thing: I criticized Singer over his infanticide position but I meant it more as a question than negative comment on him. Animal Lib was a very important part of my decision to avoid animal products to a greater degree than I previously had been managing. And my favorite Singer bbok, Practical Ethics, is earmarked and highlighted to no end. I just felt bad for perhaps seeming overly-critcal of him. ;-D

not which are superior to others in certain aspects. It doesn't matter as far as the principle of equal consideration of interests is concerned. I think this latter point is what you've been arguing - and I agree with it. To put in the most general form I believe in the Prime Directive - even if I can't always explain way other than to say that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. OK so there are allusions to both Star Trek and Asimov. But I do want to ask you this - how do you feel about abortion? If you believe that unless you can prove a being does not suffer harm it should not be killed then are you against all abortions? I know Singer isn't - he actually supports, in theory, infaticide as long as they're killed painlessly. I never understood this - he says that if they die without pain then no interests have been frustrated; but pain is only 1/2 the equation. An infant is certainly a being that seeks pleasure. To kill it is to take this away from it. ehh... I'm out.

"Presumably, absent any scientific proof that ants don't feel pain, the ethical choice according to the above would be to not step on them." Scientific proof of this sort is impossible to attain - for anything. If every observation comes up negative there will still be the possibility that an insect does actually feel and the proper test simply has yet to be run. it is likewise impossible to prove that we humans feel pain. I bel;ieve Singer mentions this as well. :-p But I don;t think we're so far off in what we're saying - I said I try to avoid stepping on ants. It's just that I cantt give an answer as satisfying to me as say "equal consideration of interests" in regard to it since I don't believe they have interests. As for shrimp I think the main reasons for not supporting their deaths are 1) heavy environmental damage from trawling and 2) by-catch, which kills other more advanced creatures. I am using "science" here to help determine which creatures have interests -

Hello. not to clog up the veg forum... I'm not sure what exactly you're saying. I have read a lot of Singer and what I have taken from it of primary importance is the notion that if a being suffers there is no justification for refusing to take that suffering into consideration. The flip-side of it is that if a being does not suffer then there is nothing to consider - in regard to the being itself anyway. So IF an ant cannot feel pain (which Singer shorthands as determining sentience) then it is of zero intrinsic value. Agree? I'm not sure if it's this contention you're disagreeing with or if you're agreeing with this but disagreeing with my statement that an ant cannot feel pain. I do believe that "until science says" there is a reasonable basis for believing that an ant can feel pain that the matter is settled that it can't. Well anyway... cheers.

I've been getting into some obscure punk shit lately, but not so much metal. It's something I've been meaning to look more into though actually. I'm not gonna have a car the first year so getting to Detroit may be a pain.
