Mon 23 Apr – The Wildhearts

It's been a while since I've been to a gig that I wasn't one of the older people there which is a testament to the longevity of the boys from Newcastle. A good mix of young and old in the sold out venue.

G.U. Medicine

The whole 'tickets on the door only' scenario was, as I predicted, stupid. As we had to queue up the road for about 20 mins just to get in we missed the first 3 or so songs from this Barnsley based 4 piece.
The last 3 songs were good enough for me to buy both of their albums from the Merch store.
The sound at The Brook is always good but this 4 piece from 'way ooop North' had an awesome phat bassy sound and some killer riffs.
Stand out track from the 3 that I caught was Amphetamine Express.
I'd definately pay to see these guys again, even if their Merch guy robbed me of a quid :P

Sign

I didn't like these much. The anorexic lead sing was too posy. The shame is, that if you took his voice out of the mix the band actually had some OKish tunes.
Very forgettable. Their only saving grace was a pretty good cover of Youth Gone Wild.

The Wildhearts

You can always count on the Geordie boys to entertain and entertain they did. As usual they kicked your face in right from the start; Vanilla Radio straight into Caffeine Bomb into TV Tan.
With only two new songs on the setlist (New Flesh and Rooting for the Bad Guy), they belted out some proper classics; Everlone, Sick of Drugs, Stormy in the North, Karma in the South, Suckerpunch, My Baby Is a Headfuck, I Wanna Go Where the People Go.
The new tracks sounded great live, especially New Flesh and despite being around 9 mins long on the CD Rooting for the Bad Guy was great also.
They threw in three tracks from The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed, Nexus Icon, Top Of The World and Someone That Won't Let Me Go which went down well despite being from one of the weaker albums.

This is the setlist, I think. I can't remember the middle very well (:P) so suggestions welcomed.

I'm glad I'm not the the only one that didn't like SIGN. Really could have done without that (thankfully, short) set. Agree with your sentiments on The Wildhearts, but you forgot to mention The Revolution Will Be Televised as one of the new tracks, making 3 altogether :)

I remembered that one the next day when I was listening to the album again :)

I agree about GU Medicine, I bought both their albums as well, they're really good, and the Wildhearts were stunning.

Agreed about GU Medicine - they were pretty great. Impressive live act, too. Agreed about Sign - how annoying can one frontman be? Plus they really murdered Youth Gone Wild. Gnagh. We had a similar setlist in Manc. Was good.

I'm a bit gutted that they didn't play Slaughtered Authors from looking at that, it's the best track on the new album.

Wildhearts rocked! Speaking as someone who's only familiar with their new album and Vanilla Radio most of the set i was just head banging along but the highlight for me was Rooting for the bad guy. I had a horrible feeling, as Macca said it was an encore song, that they might cut the middle guitar break out which is my fave, but they didn't and it was the ORSM! I didn't mind SIGN, he may have been a love me, love me rock star poser but he did have a rock star vibe to him. Looked like the spawn of Marilyn Manson and the guy from Razorlight. GU Medicine were cool too, first few songs were forgettable but they improved towards the end. Singer also looked like he had the '3' network logo tattooed on his arm which was weird!
