There will be an unveiling for Lincoln High's memorial for Elliott Smith on Friday, July 21st at 3pm (come through the west side doors of the building at 16th and Salmon street). It will be the first memorial to him in Portland, OR. Lincoln High is his alma mater. Members of the Smith family and hopefully a former member of Heatmiser will be in attendance.

I think I have a serious soft spot for two-part harmonies. Which is strange, since usually I find a second singer in a song distracting and very impersonal. But! These two songs are outrageous exceptions.

Don't Touch My Bikini Doug Martsch's slightly offset backup-harmony thing in the verses just seriously makes this song. It seems just so playful to me, and I'm not sure the double would work without that. But the song also deserves distinction as having verses like a thousand times as catchy as the chorus.

For a long time I thought that Colin Meloy had some kind of connection to Lincoln, if only for "I Was Meant For The Stage". I thought somehow that there was only the one foyer.

What are your favorite places at school to listen to certain songs? Strong connections?

For me- walking from Halpern's room to junior hall, listening to "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure. Sophomore hall and "Digital Love" by Daft Punk, and the north first floor bench area (under the stairs) and "I'd Rather Dance With You" by Kings of Convenience.

I am not going to make any numbered lists anymore. But I would like to list and write about some songs I have liked very much, recently.

"happy"/The Wrens
For a long time I loved the first few minutes of this song, slow and haunting and overwhelming to me. But, when the big whining vocals came in, I usually hit the right arrow. I'm ashamed I did. This song is so beautiful through and through, so powerful in those little defiant needles of electric guitar and the anger of his voice.

"Black Cab" is one of my favorite songs in a long time. It is the kind of song you listen to over and over again, until you know every little twang and rise, until you sing it without noticing you are, that suddenly cements a grin on your face when you hear the opening lines.

It's amazing. From the harpsichord, to what might be the warmest guitar line I think I've ever heard, I just can't get over it.
