Sat 9 Feb – Somewhere Back In Time
Iron Maiden

WOW. Maybe if there is a God, He sure as hell delivered me one of the most memorable nights I'll ever have. I woke up at 9AM on the day, and anticipated that heaps of Iron Maiden diehards would have already made it to the GA line by 11AM, so I'd better get moving. Arrived at 11AM, only 3 guys are lining up for Gold GA's and this German guy tells me "This is so strange. In Essen, where I live, people began lining up for the Maiden show at 9AM in the morning!". Well, obviously I WAYYY overestimated people in Australia, especially when it comes to Silver GA's (which I hand)!!! THE BLOODY ENGLAND-TYPE WEATHER (rainy and windy) was definitely art of the problem (thanks Bruce and co. for bringing the weather with you!!!). Only a handful of people arrived for the next two hours - in the traditional Aussie spirit, even the most diehard Aussie fans who arrived early stuck around in the bar rather than lining up. Except for a few, including yours truly. Met a metalhead from Canberra named Nathan, talked everything about metal to pass away the time, as one does. Eventually it gets to 5PM and FINALLY we have a decent GA line going on (vast majority so far were Gold GAs, lucky bastards!!!).

When the doors opened, and going through the security bits, the FIRST defining moment of the night happened: Me and Nathan were both SILVER GAS, but the security dude gave us THE FUCKIN GOLD GA WRISTBANDS!!!!!! And combined with us being in the front of the line, we knew we would be in the best spot in the house. AND WE BLOODY WERE! (nearly, the First to the Barrier folks occupied the first row, we were in the second row). We fought onto our middle position on the second row the entire night.

OK, on to the night's proceedings. First opening act, of course, was Lauren Harris. The bassist looked totally , the guitarist looked and the drummer, well I don't know really what to make of him. I must say, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. She gave it her best, it was alright, and her tight leather pants gained the appreciation of the crowd and me, let me tell you! Next was the bummer of the night, Behind Crimson Eyes, some crappy Aussie band. All I want to say about it was that the Gold GA crowd was in chanting "FUCK OFF", "MAIDEN, MAIDEN", various other slurs, and of course, giving ' em the Finger and chucking stuff at them. The drummer was half-laughing most of the time, and the singer upped his douchebag-ness by giving the finger back to the crowd, and showing he is SEWWWW METAL by swilling from a Jack Daniels. Fuck off, man.

After an excruciating wait, finally the curtain fell and IRON MAIDEN was away! Immediately, I was squashed into a pulp, but fought for my spot, as Aces High fired away. I won't bother going into song by song detail, but I can sure as hell tell you they was simply UNFORGETTABLE. The stage and pyros were amazing, and during Iron Maiden, the huge robotic Eddie walked in. Good times! Oh yeah, and there was a guy in an Eddie costume in the front row too - Props to you buddy! I don't know what else to say other than I don't think I'll see as epic a show till Maiden comes Down Under again (Bruce promised us!).

nice review dude, but i think i recognise: OK, on to the night's proceedings. First opening act, of course, was Lauren Harris. The bassist looked totally hair metal, the guitarist looked power metal and the drummer, well I don't know really what to make of him The band looked like a combination of persona. The guitarist looked like he should have come from a Power Metal band, the bassist from a Hair Metal band, and the drummer from a gay pride parade. Nice work getting the gold GA!!

I have been to a few concerts before, but fuck me, that was realy something else, dave murrays screaming guitar realy takes you to another place. When the show was over i just wanted to crawl up somewhere and die, i just thought fuck, how is anything in normal life ever going to make me happy after that? Im worried that now when i go and see my favourite band (the smashing pumpkins) at v fest, they wont be able to match up to maiden, they better come back soon, if i knew they were going to be THAT GOOD i would have got tickets to both nights

Yeah - fuck wow. What a night. Such a great night - I said to my gf that one of the few problems with seeing Maiden live, is knowing where to look! They are all such showmen you want to watch them all! Steve's fingers were a blur all night - holy crap his hands must be bionic. I'm looking forward to seeing HELLOWEEN in a few weeks. But liked dougy said, I'm worried that they will be an anti-climax after seeing Maiden.

Agreed. 'Arry's fingers MUST be fuckin bionic or somethin, eh? How does a 50+ y.o. guy still manage to be such a speedy motherplucker? Oh and I forgot, how good was Bruce berating Janick for prancing around near the pyro area! The crowd seemed like they wanted Janick up in smoke!!! I WAS looking forward to going to HELLOWEEN(I already bought the ticket, which was disappointingly expensive, might I add) but looks like I'll sell it now out of respect for Dad, as he's having his cataract operation the day before :( Oh, as much as I like Deris, he's no Kiske man!!

  • lordcthulhu

@Bozzy: Well us first-timers won't hesitate for a second to seem again next year (hopefully!) @gringonacho: Yeah, the gig must have been extra-special for those like you who saw 'em in the Fear of the Dark tour!

Hey dude thanks for the sweeet review. I can't believe what a lucky bastard u are getting into the gold section. I had to settle for silver standing on Saturday, but managed to get up there into the 2nd gold row on Sunday. I could literally see the sweat dripping off Steve Harris' forehead... and standing in the smoke as it poured off the stage during Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, waving my lighter around with tears in my eyes... absolutely mind blowing. Nothing in my life will ever compare to that

Steve is my favourite bassist, Dave is my favourite guitarist, Yanic is my favourite showman, bruce is my favourite vocalist, Nicko is... well not my favourite drummer but a mad cunt just the same! Cant say im a massive fan of adrian, i think he is the least needed member of the band. Still, the current line up is by far the best line up in maidens history, i hope no one leaves for a very long time

@1000_ways: Cool, you pulled it off too! Lol, I was in ecstasy but by the end of the show I was as thirsty as the fuckin Ancient Mariner himself - like him I was surrounded by water (i.e. sweat) but not a drop to drink (except a squeeze of water from Security)! @dougy: Yanick is so animated on stage that many fans suggest he should be made the new Eddie!
