  • Green Day concert review

    5 jui. 2009, 7h37m

Sat 4 Jul – Green Day, The Bravery

The Bravery put on a good show, although the band seemed really cocky (despite the fact that they're not that good). Green Day were fabulous, as usual. They played stuff from the new album, as well as obligatory fan favorites like Basket Case, Longview, etc. The special effect used were great, and included fireworks, explosions, pillars of fire, and machines blasting confetti. Although the tickets were cheap ($73 for floor), and it was neat that Green Day made it mandatory for them to be picked up on the day of the event to prevent scalping, the merch prices were fucking highway robbery. $40 for a shirt? $95 for a hoodie? Seriously? Other than that though, my only real complaint was that they didn't play as much from their new album as I would've liked. I didn't think that they were going to play Last of the American Girls, but I had some hope that they would play Peacemaker, which unfortunately they did not. Overall, great concert, if you're any sort of a fan of this band, be sure to seem them live before you die.

Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon - My honest opinion on this album is that it's one of the greatest black metal albums of all time, if not *the* quintessential BM album. It's bleak, heavy, satanic, and uncomprimising from start to finish. Nocturno Culto's vocals are bone chilling, Fenriz' drumming is relentless...anything that has been and is considered black metal, you will find in this album. Most people have heard this one, but if you haven't, DO IT NOW.

Lurker Of Chalice - Lurker of Chalice - This album falls more in the experimental side of things in the spectrum of black metal. Regardless, what an album! A side project of Leviathan's Wrest, it's not really surprising how evil and foreboding this album ends up sounding. It has it's melodic moments, so depending how you like your black metal this may be good or bad. According to MA, Lurker of Chalice has 4 unreleased albums. Hopefully they will someday be unleashed upon unsuspecting humanity soon!

Havohej - Dethrone The Son Of God - There are a lot of mixed opinions on this band and this album. If I had a 'albums you must hear before you die list', Dethrone The Son Of God would probably be on that list instead of this one. This album is one of the most hateful pieces of shit ever composed by a human being - every song denounces Christ, God, the Virgin Mary...you name it, Paul Ledney hates it. A very love or hate album I feel it's a memorable album and worth hearing.

Beherit - Drawing Down The Moon - Essential black metal from Finland. Others might argue that The Oath Of Black Blood is better than DDTM, but parts of The Oath are quite raw and underproduced - really only for bigger fans of the band. Whereas DDTM is much more accessible to anyone - heavy, crushing bestial black metal that manages to have it's ambient moments without sacrificing power or aggression. Get this album!

Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark - It's hard to believe one guy could have such a profound effect on an entire genre of music. While the S/T Bathory album is amazing, I chose to put this one on the list because it's simply a better album. After having some time to see what worked and what didn't, Quorthon released Under... and the results are mindblowing. The album has a nice variety of songs (ranging in pace from slow to fast) without becoming eclectic - all the songs, regardless of pace or tone are about darkness and devil worship! Influenced by thrash metal but by no means 'blackened thrash'. Like Darkthrone's UAFM, Bathory's music, and particularly this album has stood the test of time to become a true black metal legend.

Bathory - The Return.... - Another essential black metal album brought to you by Quorthon. The Return.... has a much more ritualistic feel to it and a darker guitar tone than Under The Sign, but still great. Under The Sign is generally easier to get into, and The Return....may take a few listens to warm up to. For sure, an essential black metal album.

Root - Hell Symphony - Black metal from the Czech Republic that gets extremely thrashy at times. Hell Symphony is a very "primitive" sounding album that varies from being slow and ominious to lightning fast (see the opening instrumental track, Belzebub). I would say 'raw', but that's not quite the right word to describe it. It almost has a tribal feel to it...very basic compared to a lot of black metal (about 4 or 5 riffs to any given song) but very clean production. Different, but still good!

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel Of Doom... - Canadian black metal band that were way ahead of their time, and paved the way for tons of bestial metal to come. Low guttural vocals, pounding drums and relentless guitar/basswork, there is nothing 'good' about this album, or band. The production is very, very raw (combined with distortion) and may not be appreciated by fans just getting into black metal. Regardless, FAOD is pure christ-killing evil, beginning to end and praised by metallers worldwide as being a 'perfect album'.

Master's Hammer - Ritual - More Czech black metal. Similar to Root in that they carry that 'primitive' sound with their music. Master's Hammer have more of a heavy metal sound to their music, but still maintain a very dark atmosphere. There are keyboards in this, but they're not faggoty Demon Burger style - very old school sounding. A must hear for BM fans and fans of the Czech metal scene.

Archgoat - Angelcunt (Tales of Desecration) - Outstanding bestial black metal. Archgoat are about as dark and guttural as black metal gets, and Angelcunt (while not officially being an album) is no exception. Very slow and highly death metal influenced in parts. There's keyboards in this as well, but they really add to the atmosphere and do a good job of making the breakdowns even unholier than they already are.

Mortuary Drape - All The Witches Dance - The defining 'ritualistic' black metal album. Mortuary Drape are one of the few bands that manages to find a perfect balance between ambience and brutality - and by far, ATWD is their finest display of this. A slower album than many of the others on this list, but regardless of tempo, ATWD is truly a gem.
