From the Oxford English Dictionary: Oliver: Used allusively and always in conjunction with Roland with reference to the two comrades of the Chanson de Roland, who having previously fought each other in single combat in which neither won, were regarded as unbeatable together. Hence: a person comparable to Oliver in respect of courage or warlike deeds; something that is an equal match for another thing.
