A few weeks ago, a couple of coworkers and I set our iTunes libraries to "shared" so that we can all listen to each other's music. I've been taking wicked advantage of this, especially of the coworker whose library contains almost 4,500 songs . Since I'm kind of cheap about spending money on music that I'm not 100% sure I'm going to like, this has been an awesome way for me to hear more of artists I've been curious about. In addition to catching up on older Tori Amos, I've heard more of the Shins (yay!) plus some Belle and Sebastian (okay, but I don't think it's ever going to get under my skin) and Sigur Rós (I don't think so).

Anyway, this week's FRT comes courtesy of his collection:

1. All Things Reconsidered, Phish

It's not bad, but I can't help thinking of Kumar's exchange with the "business hippie" in Harold and Kumar to to White Castle: "Please. Like they want to go listen to a bunch of Phish records while you read your lame ass poetry."

2. Crazy, Barenaked Ladies

Yeah, I think I might like the Barenaked Ladies. But what's with the faux-reggae riff at the end? These guys are weird, seriously weird.

3. Empty Shell, Cat Power

Not love at first listen, but might really grow on me. I really ought to check out more.

4. Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!, Sufjan Stevens

I'll put this up with Belle and Sebastian. Not bad, might make good background music for working, but I don't see it getting must-listen status on my playlist.

5. You're My Favorite Waste of Time, Marshall Crenshaw

Am I wrong, or is there some serious Beatles influence here? This is kind of fun; I may need to check out more.

6. The Last Stop, Dave Matthews Band

Wow, this is kind of obnoxious. And the obnoxiousness is compounded by the fact that it's over six minutes long. That said, I hated The Mariner's Revenge Song by the Decemberists (can you believe it?!), not to mention Aria—the Delerium remix of All Turns to Yesterday by the Mediaeval Baebes—at first, and now I love them both. Sometimes you can't predict what will grow on you … or what you'll eventually lose interest in, for that matter.

7. Weekapang Groove, Phish

More Phish. I'm not feeling it. The longer this goes, the less I'm feeling it.

8. Disappear, R.E.M.

Mr. Mich hates R.E.M. Hates 'em. I owned a cassette of Out of Time back in high school and loved it (though I've long since lost it).

9. The Neighbor, Jason Falkner

Ehh, not bad. This can go on the "check out some more" list.

10. Snowball, Jim Cullum Jazz Band

Huh. I don't listen to jazz on my own, even though I tend to kind of like it—at least, this kind—when I'm exposed to it.

Well, that was definitely more random than an FRT from my own collection—but even here, there was some overlap (the double Phish … I think I'll pass on that next time, thanks.)
