Here's what a packed house looks like. You can see part of the second story, wrap-around balcony.

A picture from the second story balcony. You can see how great the view is and how the Tabernacle combines big-venue quality and small-venue feel.

I took some pictures with my camrea phone that I will put on here once I get them off my phone. The quality isn't the greatest but oh well.

Review: There is a reason this place gets voted "best concert venue" year after year. From the quirky, old-style set up with three levels of balconies to the sloped main floor to the unrivaled sound quality, the Tabernacle has everything you could want in a concert venue. With such a wonderful reputation, it always gets the best acts to perform which means that the crowds are always wonderful as well. Success breeds success.

The building itself is probably the most intriguing thing about the Tabernacle. When you enter, you are in a lobby area with stairs all around you. Downstairs is the Cotton Club, a separate, smaller (but still very cool) venue. Go up the first flight of stairs and you're on the main floor, stage level. There is a bar spanning the entire length of the back wall to meet your alcohol needs (but they don't have Newcastle, which is disappointing). It's $6 for a 16oz. Bud Lite which is kinda pricey for a crappy beer. This is my only complaint with the place though. As I mentioned, the main floor is slightly inclined, so even if you're in the back of the room, you can get a pretty good view of the stage.

The second floor is home to a large balcony that completely encompasses the interior. There are seats, but most people stand. It's an awesome view - high enough where you can see intricacies of the performers that you can't catch from stage level (absolutely the perfect place to watch a DJ from), but not so high where you feel disconnected. But that is not to say that the third or fourth level balconies are too high. The third level balcony is basically a smaller version of the second story one. It only occupies the wall opposite the stage instead of wrappinig around on the side walls. It's still a great view though. The fourth floor balcony is only a couple sections of seats, about 10 rows deep. It's pretty high up there and is a dope spot to do some crowd watching. If you can get to the front row it would be a good place to watch the show for a while, but if you're not in the front row, I don't really think it's worth it.

Each level of the Tabernacle has its own lounge area and bar. The open square staircases are great and give a fun-house attitude to the place.

The sound and lighting is spectacular. The entire wall behind the stage can be used for special lighting effects. For the Sound Tribe Sector 9 show, it was transformed into a gigantic animated lite-brite. All the spotlights and laser effects (should the act you are seeing there warrant them) add a lot to the atmosphere, but don't do too much as to overshadow the performers. Seeing a show here is an absolute must.

Rating: 10/10 (it would have been 11/10 if not for the absence of Newcastle behind the bar).
