Last year (2011) I went to two live concerts of The Gathering: one at P60, Amstelveen on the 27th of May and one at De Kelder, Amersfoort on the 16th of September. Both concerts were really great. At first I didn't know what to expect of the new singer, Silje Wergeland. But she was really good! Not only her 'own' songs from The West Pole, but also the older songs sounded really great. I never knew she had such a powerful voice. Highlight both times was the amazing new single Heroes for Ghosts. It is such a great song and fits so well with her voice and her way of singing. The only thing Silje lacks is a bit of charisma to interact with the audience. It seems she is still a bit shy. But that might have been due to the audience as well. On both events the audience was not really enthusiastic, and talking a lot in between, but also during the songs, which was very annoying. I was also surprised that such a few people came to see them. I would expect them to have more fans after so many years. But despite that it was really great and I enjoyed it very much. As support act for both concerts they invited Kingfisher Sky, a Gothic metal band with some folk influences. Although I liked the fact that they had a cello player in their standard line-up, I was not that much impressed by their music. There are such a lot of these new Gothic metal bands these days who all sound a bit the same in my opinion. So I was glad when The Gathering started. As already said: Silje surprised me with the power of her voice. Marjolein looked so sweet and very enthusiastic on bass and backing vocals. And more in the background 'the guys' were really enjoying doing their thing. I hope they will do more events (in this line-up) the coming year(s), maybe after release of their new album which is planned for September.
I found some great, high-quality videos on youtube from the first concert, thank you people for making and sharing them!

Oh, I obviously have forgotten to leave comment here, though I was going too :-) I watched some of the videos and I'm really surprised by Silje! Actually, I didn't think she sings the loudest notes of old songs (like last choruses in Travel or In Motion) without failing! Her voice is much more powerful than it's shown on the album, I hope they will use her potential in the next release! And I want the new DVD with Silje :-)
