"A truly gifted kid. Maybe too talented for the world at large. The cloth-eared record buying public need 'obvious' nonsense like Oasis to soothe the itch of rebellion." Nice shout. Was expecting some hardcore punk in your collection. Greetings from germany

The place is called "Jecklin." It's downtown and, appropriately enough, just across the street from one my watering holes. I pick up a few Prestige or Blue Note whathaveyous and enjoy a pint or five while going through the liner notes. At the moment I’m trying to track down everything ever recorded by Wardell Gray. I thought it would be relatively easy…

Hey, man. That's one mean collection of RVG you got there. keep going. I've got a place in Zurich that I'm no longer allowed to go to (Ava's rule, not mine), where they have all the vintage (1951-1966) Blue Note, Prestige, etc. CDs for less than the price of a good pipe load. You've inspired me. I'm headed back on payday. The kids can find their own food...Keep dry.

Jaspar- Glad to see you check in and thanks for the tip on McCoy. I cut my Tyner teeth on "Fly with the Wind," recorded a few years later and using a full string section, if I recall. I'm unfamiliar with Sama Layuca but will give it some good listening on your recommendation. I've been stuck in a Dr. Lonnie Smith groove for most of the summer. Can't get enough of his "Boogaloo to Beck" tribute album...Spent the last two weeks trekking through the Alps and hitting the pipe. That Cyprus gig of yours turned me green! I haven't had beach time in waaaay too long.

Dude, a good place to start with Sinatra is the Reprise and Capitol collections. Each one is worth its weight in gold. From there it's easy to find direction and start to build.

Summer Wind is unique as it's neither a classic Sinatra torch song nor a ring-a-ding-ding, up-tempo burner. It kind of mosey's along at a languid pace. It's certainly in my top ten. Have you ever heard him do the studio version of "Empty Tables?" That and "Drinking Again" are up at the top of my list.
