Sat 3 Mar – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gnarls Barkley
I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Gnarls Barkley concert today. Great fun, great fun. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse definitely held their own at the beginning of the show, but RHCP just killed it. I had almost forgot how much better most music sounds live. Except hip hop. Because even live it is usually still just a turntable with the beat and an MC. Very rarely is their any palpatable energy at a rap concert, and that is only when you get a very dynamic performer (the best I've seen in person was probably David Banner). But when you get a live band up there (i.e. the Roots, who I have seen), you just feel the energy. But back to this show. I would suggest that everyone go see one big budget stadium rock tour show in their life. Why? Because this show was one of the greatest spectacles I have ever seen. And I don't mean that as a bad thing. But they had a light show/huge video screen behind them, and four movable smaller screens in front of that. It just made the whole thing so much fun to be at. I say rock tour because most people I know don't really like pop music too well, and rock and pop tours seem to have the best stage shows. As far as rap shows, the best stage show I've seen is probably Kanye, and it was maybe half the show that this was. The best overall was probably Prince, and even that was about 3/4 the show that this was. But Prince was still an overall better concert, as I liked the music more.
One more thing. I had completely forgotten how funky the Red Hot Chili Peppers are/used to be. There was a point during the show when I said to myself "That sounds like something James Brown would do." I looked it up when I got back and realized that they actually had an album produced by George Clinton. These are some funky white boys here. They've just gone a bit pop with their recent releases.
