around april 2010, jazz really clicked for me and i got kinda obsessive about it. so far i've even bought about half a dozen books i'm still working my way through… i'm really glad though and look forward to delving even deeper into all kinds of jazz.

This year I started to get into “true” hip-hop. Before I had only known 50 Cent, Eminem, and mainstream “rap” artists like that. Talib Kweli was among the first of the genre whose music I legitimately enjoyed. This led me to research more and find Immortal Technique, Nas, Dead Prez, etc… (much better than Kanye West's Graduation)

We've come a long way from The Mahavishnu Orchestra or Liquid Tension Experiment, or even instrumentals of Rush or Dream Theater. The following bands admittedly don't sound too much like these bands, but they've pioneered into new territories that, to me, seemed uninhabited before. Each of these are highly suggested to anyone with an open mind.

Shakira from Colombia. Years ago, I never paid much attention to Shakira. I remember flipping through the channels and her Whatever, Whenever video was on MTV. I thought she was just another beautiful but talentless singer. Then I randomly downloaded a song of hers over 2 years ago. The song "No" was the most emotional song I've heard in a long long time.
