"Some of the most imaginative and interesting rock and metal these days seems to be coming out of Scandinavia and this self-released example by Stockholm based Dying Daylight is yet another example. A project started by keyboard player Ville Skon from Shiver and ex-Therion backing singer Suvi Virtane n(who admittedly is actually from Finland and technically not a Scandinavian) this is an album full of atmosphere and melodies but with a rock heart. Throughout you can hear little bits which remind you of Epica, Nightwish and Therion but it’s actually a difficult album to pigeonhole in style. This might make a reviewer’s job difficult but it is a good thing for the band.

Musically there are lots of lush keyboards interspersed with some beautiful piano playing. The guitars are a bit understated at times which might be deliberate or may be due to the limits of the production and whilst not all of the songs have solos when Santtu Rosen does cut loose such as on “Season’s Change” it fairly leaps out of the speakers. The melodic intro and verses and big chorus of “Fading” is where it all comes together and this is probably the best of the songs on offer here. Overall the album has a tone of loss and reflection, Suvi’s lyrics often dark and full of longing such as on “50 Days Of Sorrow” and “Solace In Silence” and definitely sound like they were written on dark winter’s nights. There is some hope around at times but lines like “Weighed down by sorrow, rain and despair/In a situation with no solution” from “Recall are more typical.

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of melancholy in rock though and the playing and song writing here is all pretty good but what makes the album stand out are the unusual style of vocals. The blond Fin has a unique three dimensional style where she can sound deep and sexy, plaintive and emotional or operatic but mixes these styles up to the point of occasionally displaying all three in one verse. Whether you like a singer is always a personal thing and Ms Virtanen’s style may grate on some ears but it gives Dying Daylight their signature sound and having played the album quite a few times now I can say it’s a grower.

So an enjoyable debut from an interesting band although maybe lacking a killer track to really make their mark. Definitely worth checking out if you like your music dark but melodic.

"Dying Daylight is a band from Finland and 'Luminous dreams' is their full-length debut. Although the band was formed in 2003, they've gone through numerous line-up changes and have had some problems, but keyboardist Ville Skön kept the band alive and was eventually able to obtain a complete band for the 2008 release of this CD. All of the members have experience in other bands too, including bassist Justin Biggs (who's also currently with Revolution Renaissance) and female vocalist Suvi Vertanen, who has been a backing vocalist (part of the choir) for the popular and long-running Swedish band Therion, though she's moved on from Therion and Dying Daylight has become her focus.

In a way, 'Luminous dreams' is your typical female fronted symphonic/gothic/atmospheric CD, but I do think the band has their own identity. This is due in large part to the fairly unique voice of Suvi, who seems to combine different vocal styles; sometimes she's your standard upbeat gothic metal vocalist, sometimes she's quite dark, and other times she can be somewhat operatic and more in the soprano range. I like her voice and think she does a very solid job, but just like all vocalists, not everyone will be happy with her performance. One thing's for sure, she's instantly recognizable and an important part of what makes the band who they are.

What's so impressive about this CD (especially considering it's a debut) is that it's consistent from start to finish regarding quality. All of the songs are good to great, and there's not one weak song, but at the same time none of the songs completely blow me away. It's one of those CDs that's thoroughly enjoyable and you're left very satisfied, but not totally amazed. Though there is some speed, most of the songs are slow to mid-paced, and for those who are very much into female fronted symphonic/gothic/atmospheric metal, you should know what to expect. A few positive aspects worth mentioning are the occasional guitar solos that pop up and are well done, and also the wonderful piano play, which definitely adds something special to the songs. I should also mention that this is more of an atmospheric CD, as opposed to a highly symphonic or bombastic one, and I think the style fits Suvi's voice very well.

I don't really have favorite songs from this CD, as I enjoy them all, but I will say that the smooth track 9 "Fading" is probably the most memorable, and it's followed by the closer "Angel in heaven", a beautiful slow song with a nice chorus. So I'm certainly satisfied with this great debut, and I think the band is promising.

"Pääosin kotimaisista muusikoista muodostuva Dying Daylight edustaa tervetullutta tulokasta suomalaisiin goottimetallipiireihin. Vaikka itse yhtye on tuore, ei sen jäseniltä puutu aiempiakaan meriittejä: laulusolisti Suvi Virtanen esiintyi muutama vuosi sitten Therionin kuorossa ja kosketinsoittaja Ville Skön vaikutti Shiverin riveissä. Kitaristi Santtu Rosén muistetaan Dilemmasta ja basisti Justin Biggs on hankkinut mainetta Revolution Renaissancen riveissä.

Monista muista goottibändeistä poiketen Dying Daylightin kappaleet eivät kallistu dekadentin hautuumaaromantiikan puolelle vaan huokuvat puhdasta kaihoa.

"Dying Daylight on yhtye jonka nimestä nousee ainakin allekirjoittaneelle ensimmäisenä mieleen Charonin kuuden vuoden takainen miltei samalla tavoin nimetty albumi.
