PJ Harvey We Float (2000)

from the album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea

It goes: "but one day we'll float, take life as it comes"

I remember not knowing anything about PJ and that gives me shivers. She was probably the last of the great artists from the 90s I got to know, quite late into this decade; but as soon as I started to listen to her music I felt like she'd been here with me since forever. Even though every album was a joy listen, Stories... was put aside by her earlier material. It wasn't until very recently that I started to get more into this album, and discovered "We Float", one of the best closers I've ever heard.

At the core, We Float is a pretty simple song, sort of a pop-rock ballad with an uplifting chorus; but Polly's talent takes it one step further and makes a piece of pure art. Her exquisite pronunciation makes every word echo in your ears, and stay there for a while before realizing what she means. Then those killer lyrics of resignation and a perfect summary of the whole inspiration of the album (living in NY).

And of course the music, which in spite of the aforementioned simplicity, reveals the maturity of an artist who doesn't need to get pretentious to show off how great of a creator she is.
