9 août 2012, 16h03mWow, been forever since I posted here. I probably won't be posting more mix CDs since I now have a weekly internet radio show! You can listen here (live Mondays at 7PM ET), or subscribe to the podcast: http://editsradio.org/ Would love feedback/requests!
20 juin 2010, 17h16mWell, it's been a while since I posted anything here...
I found myself in Florida this week, visiting my family and driving my old car which they took down there with them. I had loaded up my Sansa with music, but the car only had a CD player. So... here is a CD-sized mix. As tomorrow is the first day of summer, the theme is "Summer Jams". Nothing hip and obscure, just my favorites from the past year or so (ok, back to March '09 in one case) for a hot and beautiful day.
This was a quickie: three drafts, no crossfading. Hey, I'm on vacation. 79:50 as I cut it and/or added silence.

16 août 2006, 16h35mHere's a mix I made on a challenge from tastyanagram: songs from 1996. Not just *from* 1996, but that really make me think of then. I made myself a CD with a few of these edited down and gave my brother a longer cassette version. Finished it earlier, but was just re-indexing and burning my own re-edited copy today.

8 juin 2006, 16h10m"Hey fellas! I'm talkin' to you, you, and you too. You guys know who I'm talkin' to. Those of you who go out and stay out all night and have the nerve to expect us to be home when you get there. But let me tell you somethin'! The sisters are not going for that no more. 'Cause we realize two things: that you ain't doing anything for us that we can't better do ourselves. So from now on, we're gonna use what we got, to get what we want! Sooooo... you better think!"
courtesy of the inestimable Lyn Collins (1948-2005). I am currently listening to Dylan's version. Mmm.

As you may have noticed the positions of the two-movement tracks are mirror images of each other and also each disc is exactly 79 minutes. I think I have gone completely insane. There is much I could say about the actual mixing and editing and such (well, there isn't much editing on this one really), but I have been squinting at this list and the wav files and my compression filters for far too long and I think maybe I am never going to listen to these songs ever again. Or at least not for a week. But maybe this will show up on some people's lists so feel free to comment and seriously, listen to all of these artists if you haven't.
Some of these artist pictures are really crazy. And that's not Polar, he's just one guy (from Norway, formerly of Certificate 18 and Subtitles fame. I think he lives in San Francisco now!)
the Fanu track is just a complete rip of This Mortal Coil's version of "Song to the Siren" (which I also love) but oh my god it is so good. If he didn't do it, Teebee or whoever might have done it and I would have cringed.
7 mai 2006, 22h04mI wrote this in my LJ but then I figured may I should have just put it here. So I'll crosspost.
This is so painfully true. The -9dBFS figure is exactly what I get every time I remaster things for a mix. I could go to -12, but I'd be pushing everything down instead of half down and half up, and it would make the previously-too-hot tracks sound that much more obviously distorted, and the previously-decent ones still stick out as sounding "odd". Sigh. Ugly compromises. Next time I'm going to try to push the envelope (ha ha).
You always need a little wiggle room too, even after allowing for dynamic range, and I'd rather lean quieter there. (To be honest more than -12 is too far for me, for at least most kinds of music. Child of the 90s.) Nothing is more annoying than some engineer loading up the whole thing and punching a button and walking away. I love the part in the liner notes to Things Fall Apart (The Roots, I don't know why album-link isn't working) where Amir talks about this. I think I'll go listen to that later.
Mom and Steve noticed this on the wedding CD to the point where they thanked me for it, but having an immediate comparison to a ton of discs on shuffle will do that even if you're not an audio geek. It's so aggravating.
I need a copy of Photek 4. Not the one on the CD, the real thing. All of them, but that's really the one. I am itching to measure it. Or Test, or 2 on 1, or any of the other classics I've wanted to collect at some point. And then I'd buy the latest thing on Ram and spit very loudly.
15 avr. 2006, 4h25mWe've finally been having some warm, it's-really-nice-out days around here. Broken Social Scene is such a spring album. I have no idea why they released it in October. But I still love it.
I can't wait until it gets hot enough to rinse out Musique Concrete again. (Whyever is Calibre not in the database correctly?)

That is all.
