Now they're looking for new Kooks and other bands of this trend. For me they sign contract with major label too early. It's just a dilemma 'Sing contract with major label, and get to bigger audience, show our, in fact, good music, or stay in indie label and have epic status?' But even if you have control on your art, you can't win with mainstream. You can change something in it for a little while, but later it'll back to its sick shape. Earlier it'll squeeze from you everything. It's sad, but true.

Such a extended answer because my life= music. This is the only subject/topic that I can talk and talk and talk all days. I agree indie isn't some kind of music wich has definite sound etc. but some kind of way of life. :P Ok, The Kooks, they start as an independent band. But in mainstream label- do they have full control of music what they want to create, how they want to sound it? I don't think so. It's ok to sign contract with big label, when you have full control- e.g. Sonic Youth. Imo, the Kooks' sound and image is too commercial and now there are thousands of Kooks' clones wich try to sound, look etc. like them. This is terrible. Why they can't play music like they want to, except of 'we have to sound like a Kooks, and we'll be famous'. Of course it's not fault of the Kooks, this is problem of every alternative/indie band that break into mainstream. The same thing happened with 70's punk and all 'grunge boom'. Big cheeses were looking for new Sex Pistols and new Nirvanas.

Ok, britpop I judged too generally, I don't have nothing against e.g. Blur, they're ok. But The Kooks? I'll quote something from discussion in indie's tag shoutbox: "indie rock means: play boring pop music, but pretend it's not mainstream, so you can market it to middle-class white people who think they don't like mainstream music" The Kooks is pop, there's no doubt 'bout it. This real indie like Pavement, Sebadoh, all underground U.S., also UK 80's scene- their the biggest influence was punk rock, hardcore, DIY ethic, opposition to mainstream culture. Make yr. own label record. Have a mentality, that you can live as a musician, have money from this, but you don't have to be part of mainstream culture, you can live next to this, make yr. own enviroment, something special, scene, culture. Like you see now, this all, most of the 'indie' scene can't live without major label companies, because they don't know any other way of self-promotion. This is not indie at all.
