Fri 11 Mar – Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Oh Land
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark hit the stage with confidence and precision performing 22 songs that span the band's career. Five tracks from the new release, History of Modern fit in quite well with the classics.
The bulk of the show highlighted the hits:
If You Leave,
Locomotion, Walking on the Milkyway and so forth.
(To avoid any concert spoilers, these shall remain the only named tracks.)
OMD has 11 studio albums to choose 22 songs from. A problem arises. OMD has some fans dedicated to mainly the first four albums and some fans that prefer the later material. With this in mind, it is impossible to satisfy everybody's ideal set list. It is my belief that OMD has done the best they can with their selection. DISCLAIMER: This is the History of Modern tour, not the re-visiting of Architecture & Morality which happened in 2007.
During the show, there was one technical mishap where McCluskey's bass had not been turned back on by a crew member. They stopped the song about 30 seconds in and skipped it for the time being. McCluskey said jokingly that his poor playing probably caused the problem. They retuned to the song once the bass guitar was working.
Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys stopped to meet approximately 10 fans about an hour after the show outside of the Crofoot, myself being one of those who waited. The band was gracious and friendly. They signed autographs, posed for photos and talked about the tour.
OMD's decision to tour the U.S. was "to get our foot back in the door," according to McCluskey. Both he and Humphreys were expecting to lose money by touring the U.S., but have been pleasantly surprised to be making their percentages. McCluskey said that had they known the band would have this success, they would have come back to the states sooner.
Both during the show and outside the Crofoot, McCluskey said that OMD will be back soon.
McCluskey and Humphreys thanked the fans for coming and made their way to the bus. The next night... Chicago.
