I think you should first listen to Oum Kalthoum, don't know if you like her, but I recommend the old recordings of hers when her voice was in its prime. For persian music I would recommend Shahram Nazeri, a guy with a mind blowing voice, I'm not sure but I think his music is mix of both persian and kurdish, and it is sufi music. Also theres the classical armenian music, Sayat-Nova's songs. And finally arabesque music from turkey, its been compared to blues, not the music structure, but the themes and its origins.

Hi John, hope you are well. Wondering if you've heard the new Old Californio album Sundrunk Angels. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't had the chance already. It's available on Spotify too :)

Hello from Canada! Thanks for the suggested artists... While I am not too keen on Oumou Sangare (I find her work too exhuberant), I do have a couple of her albums. Never heard of Mamou Sidibe though, I'll look into it. As for fado, I haven't fully embraced this style but have heard few of its artists. I'll check out Ana Moura for sure. You have quite the "chaotic" listening history! I like that...

Hello John! Thank you very much for accept my request and thank you for the compliment! I found your musical taste very ecletic and interesting and I couldn't help add you as a friend. I love fado, too. I love Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, a bit of Camané and Mariza... We mainly produce Fado, there are lots of fado artists here, but for me, Amália is the maximum expoent. I feel so portuguese when I listen to her. I am very pleased that I found you! I think she gave a meaning to our people in her songs and that was our true meaning and that's why I think that Amália is Portugal, and Portugal is Amália. We have other artists. Rui Veloso, Jorge Palma, Madredeus... If you like something with african roots: Da Weasel, Buraka Som Sistema, Boss AC. A great revelation here is called Deolinda - I think they're great, they made a mix of fado and pop music, really, really great. Hope this helps!

À propos de moi

While I was growing up in the '60s and '70s, Mom listened to country music in the house, while out in his workshop Daddy listened to either rock and roll or what was then called "beautiful music" (think Mantovani, Hollywood Strings) and was also a big fan of Walter (now Wendy) Carlos' early electronic album, Switched on Bach; at our Lutheran church on Sundays, we'd hear everything from Gregorian chant and Buxtehude to contemporary pieces. Out of this musical primordial soup, I emerged.

With iTunes on my desktop usually in "shuffle" mode, you can see that I have eclectic musical tastes: everything from '50's country, progessive rock and roots music to jazz, ambient, post-rock, world music of all sorts and classical. There is always more to hear. Drop me a line if this sounds like you, too.
