    20 jui. 2006, 23h29m

So i'm checking out my recommendations on My Dashboard and there's one for Current 93/Nurse With Wound. I check out the page. Not too much going on over there, but that's cool. Then i look and see who the similar artists are. Cowboy Troy?!?!?!?!? Are you serious?!?! Now i don't mind some good alt-country or "true" country, if you will, but isn't he in some shitty pop country band?

But then.... oh but then they went too far. Just a few artists down from him is This Mortal Coil, one of my top artist. How could something like this have happened? That my beloved This Mortal Coil could even be on the same page as Cowboy Troy!?!? Who is responsible!?!?
  • Best of 2006 so far...

    9 jui. 2006, 21h16m

It's that time of year again. Almost July, the midpoint of the year. Time to evaluate all the albums that have come out in 2006 so far. I decided to do a nice round top 16.

There are a few albums that i liked, but didn't quite make it, partially because they need more evaluation. But who knows if they'll show up at the end of the year? Honorable mentions: Tilly and the Wall - Bottoms of Barrels, Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones, Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped, The pAper chAse - Now You Are One of Us.

    Position: 16
    Artist: Cat Power
    Album: The Greatest
    My Favorite Track: "The Greatest"
Comments: This album had a lot to live up to. You Are Free was pretty amazing, and i confess i was hoping for a little more. Still an awesome album though.

    Position: 15
    Artist: The Station Myth
    Album: The Station Myth
    My Favorite Track: "Digger"
Comments: Great new band from New York. Best part is you can download their album for free on their website. I forsee them going far.

    Position: 14
    Artist: Mogwai
    Album: Mr. Beast
    My Favorite Track: "Acid Food"
Comments: I think this album has been highly underrated. It's probably one of their best. The slide guitar on "Acid Food" = amazing.

    Position: 13
    Artist: Prefuse 73
    Album: Security Screenings
My Favorite Track: "With Dirt And Two Texts - Later Version With Love"
Comments: Best album cover of the year so far. The album itself happens to be really good as well.

    Position: 12
    Artist: Ghostface Killah
    Album: Fishscale
    My Favorite Track: "Big Girl"
Comments: "Big Girl" samples the Stylistics song "You're a Big Girl Now" which is amazing song in and of itself. He also uses an old MF Doom sample from one of his Special Herbs albums on "Clipse of Doom". I don't know where Doom got it, but it owns as well.

    Position: 11
    Artist: Lily Allen
    Album: Alright Still
My Favorite Track: "Everything's Just Wonderful"
Comments: I heard the demos for this album months ago, and i was really excited, and predicted she is going to be absolutely huge in a few months. I still think she's going to be huge, but this album isn't quite as good as i was hoping. I had too high expectations. It's definitely not bad though. It's good enough to be number 11.

    Position: 10
    Artist: Mates of State
    Album: Bring It Back
My Favorite Track: "Like U Crazy"
Comments: It's hard to pick a favorite track, because they're all so good. I had high expectations for this album as well, but i wasn't disappointed at all.

    Position: 9
    Artist: The Knife
    Album: Silent Shout
My Favorite Track: "We Share Our Mother's Health"
Comments: I got into the Knife when i found out that the vocals on Röyksopp's "What Else Is There?" were done by Karen from the Knife. Deep Cuts, they're 2004 album, was really weird, but i loved it. Silent Shout is a little less weird, but not any less amazing.

    Position: 8
    Artist: Spitfire
    Album: Self-Help
    My Favorite Track: "Dear John"
Comments: Spitfire has renewed my faith that good hardcore still exists. I haven't listened a new hardcore album in forever, because i was tired of it. I've rarely listened to this album without going start to finish without changing the track. God Bless you, Spitfire.

    Position: 7
Artist: Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins
    Album: Rabbit Fur Coat
My Favorite Track: "Rise Up With Fists!!!"
Comments: Rabbit Fur Coat is Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley's new venture into alt-country. Not only is Jenny Lewis cute as hell, but she's got some pretty funny lyrics.

It's hard to believe your prophets
When they're asking you to change things
But with their suspect lives we look the other way
Are you really that pure, Sir?
Thought I saw you in Vegas
It was not pretty, but she was (not your wife)

Maybe they just seem funny because the music video for that song is so funny... Sarah Silverman is hot as hell too.

    Position: 6
    Artist: Regina Spektor
    Album: Begin to Hope
    My Favorite Track: "Fidelity"
Comments: I'm actually surprised this is on the list at all, let alone number 6. I've loved Regina Spektor for a while now, but when this album came out and i first heard it, i was a little bummed. I thought it was over-produced, and the songs were too busy with random distractions. There's a new version of an old song of her's called "Samson" which is arguably one of her best songs. The new version was difficult for me to get into as well. Despite all these things, i now absolutely adore this album. I even like the new version of "Samson" (but the original is still the best).

    Position: 5
    Artist: Thom Yorke
    Album: The Eraser
    My Favorite Track: "Black Swan"
Comments: I honestly didn't want to like this album too much. I wanted it to be mediocre, because i didn't want to be that guy that worships everything anyone in Radiohead does. I can't deny this album though. I've tried, but i can't stop listening to it. It's really good. Apparently, Radiohead is done with Nigel Godrich, they're long time producer (and producer of The Eraser), and it could be argued that this was a way for Thom to still work with him. In any case, magic was worked.

    Position: 4
    Artist: Danielson
    Album: Ships
My Favorite Track: "Did I Step On Your Trumpet"
Comments: This album received a little faith placement. I haven't given Ships the attention it deserves, but i know once i do, it's going to own my face. After one and a half listens, which is pretty much all i've given it, "Did I Step On Your Trumpet" is a big stand out for me. I look forward to giving this album a closer listen soon.

    Position: 3
    Artist: Liars
    Album: Drum's Not Dead
My Favorite Track: "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack"
Comments: I'd heard of Liars before, but i had never listened to them. This album blew me away more than any other album so far this year. It has this weird quality that really relaxes me, but it's not relaxing music really. It's not super agressive though either. It's pretty amazing because if nothing else i can't really think of anything that i've heard before that sounds like it.

    Position: 2
    Artist: Band of Horses
    Album: Everything All the Time
My Favorite Track: "The Great Salt Lake"
Comments: There is not a bad song on this album. Every song is amazing. Normally if i listen to an album as much as i've listened to Everything All The Time, i burn myself out on it real quick. I have yet to do this, somehow. Even more amazing, i play it almost every shift i work at Octane, and everyone i work with still loves it too. I'm curious to see how i feel about this album at the end of the year.

    Position: 1
    Artist: Neko Case
Album: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
My Favorite Track: "The Needle Has Landed"
Comments: I feel that this album is important for some reason. I feel that in 30 years, people are going to be still talking about this album. It has that permanence to me. I know it hasn't created as big a buzz as other artists, but i think time will treat this album well. Then again, that's just how Fox Confessor makes me feel. I could be completely wrong.
  • How mainstream am i? (i didn't come up with this, but it was fun)

  • Best album of the year

    10 août 2005, 16h13m

The new Sigur Rós (Takk) is possibly the best album of the year next to Sufjan Stevens' Illinois.
