  • Top albums of 2009

    17 jan. 2010, 8h50m

So after much deliberation, here is my very important top albums of 2009 list. It will contain brief descriptions of my thoughts on the albums, standout tracks and maybe some sort of blurby description of the music. I'd also like to award Nickelback the "Golden Turd Award" for continuing to be the worst band in existence in 2009.

    10. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix
Try not to bob your head incessantly while listening to this album. (You won't be able to.) I'm probably going to use this word a lot, but this is just a lot of fun. Lots of hooks, big choruses, shiny guitars and keyboards. You know the deal. You might recognize 1901 from a Cadillac commercial, but Lisztomania and Love Like a Sunset, Pt. 2 are great tracks as well.

    9. American Central Dust by Son Volt
This one was definitely a grower on me. At first, the only tracks I really liked were Down To The Wire, Dynamite and Jukebox Of Steel, I really started to appreciate the others. Folky country-y stuff.

    8. Eskimo Snow by Why?
Same as the last, really grew on me. I was really anticipating this one, since I ranked their last album, Alopecia, at number one last year. Eskimo Snow isn't quite as good. What really hurt it in my eyes was the lack of the hip-hop style of their previous work. It's much more singy. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I really just kept listening to it thinking "Where's the rapping?" Yoni's lyrics are still as brilliant as ever, so I can overlook the lack of rapping just by trying to figure out all over again what he's trying to say. I really like These Hands, January Twenty Something, This Blackest Purse and Berkeley By Hearseback.

    7. Jam Dreams by Dr. Manhattan
So they got dropped from their label, and the "jam dream" is that somebody picked them up and let them make an album for free. It really sounds like they had a lot of fun making this record. The goofiness really never lets up, and for that reason I think their self titled was better. They pretty much lay it out in Mailman, "We just do it 'cause it's dumb." Also, catch this band live if you ever get the chance. Electraumatized, Mailman, Biscuits And Groovy, and Hard Time are all standouts.

    6. Swoon by Silversun Pickups
There's just so many layers of sound on this album. I suppose that's their characteristic sound, and it sounds great. It's not too much different from Carnavas, but it still works without sounding tired. Check out: Panic Switch, Substitution, Catch and Release.

    5. xx by The xx
No layers of sound here. Really, there's not much sound at all, but the little bits of sound do all the work. It's all soft guitar lines, drum machine and a little bit of bass, and back-and-forth male/female singing. Some really catchy songs, especially Crystalised, VCR, and Basic Space.

    4. A Positive Rage by The Hold Steady
I wasn't sure if I should include this one or not. It's a live album, there's no new material on it, though there are a few b-sides that I hadn't heard prior to this album. In the end though, I just liked it too much not to include it. I'm usually not a fan of live albums, but this really captures their energy. They're a fantastic modern take on classic rock. I'm just going to supply a live video for this one, here's Your Little Hoodrat Friend. Get past Craig's voice, really. How can you not love a band that sounds this happy to be alive?

    3. 200 Million Thousand by The Black Lips
Sounds like it's about fifty years old. Lots of snappy, catchy songs. I haven't seen them, but supposedly their live act has been crazy enough to get them banned from entire countries. So, sounds like something you'd wanna see. Really, the best way I can describe them is fun so I'm gonna leave it at that. Check out Short Fuse, I'll Be With You.

    2. Post-Nothing by Japandroids
Nothing fancy here. There's a guitarist and a drummer, and they shout into the mic for all 35 minutes. They're louder than most larger bands. I can say a lot about them that I did about the Hold Steady. They're happy to be alive, and they have fun. "I don't want to worry about dying/I just want to worry about those sunshine girls." Standouts: Young Hearts Spark Fire, Wet Hair, Heart Sweats, I Quit Girls.

    1. Wilco (The Album) by Wilco
If you know me, this really shouldn't surprise you. Wilco's made better albums, definitely, but this one is still excellent. You'll find a little sampling from each "era" of Wilco here. Sonny Feeling could be from Being There, Bull Black Nova could be from A Ghost is Born, Solitaire wouldn't sound out of place on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. This is the first time in their entire career that Wilco has ever had the same lineup on back-to-back albums, and it really shows. They work well together, hopefully this lineup sticks around, though with Wilco You Never Know.

Feel free to comment, even if I don't know you.

Here's some runners-up in no particular order.

We Don't Make Music...We Make Rockets - An Aesthetic Anaesthetic

Earth To The Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols

    Elephant Shell- Tokyo Police Club

    Introducing Foxy - Foxy Shazam

    Saturdays=Youth - M83

    Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch

    Seeing Things - Jakob Dylan

Attack and Release - The Black Keys

You Have No Idea What You Are Getting Yourself Into - Does It Offend You, Yeah?

    10. Phantom on the Horizon - The Fall of Troy
More experimental than previous releases, set up in chapters like a post rock album. Also, awesome. I’m not putting up tracks to check out because there’s only five.

    9. Stay Positive - The Hold Steady
Old sound on a new band, but still sounds new, if that makes sense. Check out: Stay Positive, Magazines, Slapped Actress.

    8. Sweat It Out - The Pink Spiders
Pop rock with lots of synth. Really fun. On first few listens I preferred it over Teenage Grafitti, but I think I've changed my mind. It's poppier than the previous release, more polish, less grit. Check out: Busy Signals, Stranglehold, Sleeping On the Floor

    7. Real Emotional Trash - Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Pretty classic rock sounding, a lot of jams. Plus, it’s Stephen Malkmus, that’s basically the same as saying “Guaranteed great.” I still want Pavement to reunite, though. Check out: Baltimore, Out of Reaches, Real Emotional Trash

    6. Love Ire and SongFrank Turner
Angry British folk rock. Lots of good one-liners. Check out: Love, Ire and Song, Substitute, Reasons Not to Be an Idiot

    5. All or NothingThe Subways
More polished than their last album, they’ve definitely grown since then. I was surprised that they made this album or are even still together, considering Billy and Charlotte's breakup. Check out: Girls and Boys, Shake! Shake!, I Won’t Let You Down.

    4. Dig Out Your Soul - Oasis
Basically, to use an overused term, a return to form. They still haven't topped (What's the Story) Morning Glory, but this is far, far better than their last few releases. Tracks to check out: Bag It Up, The Shock of the Lightning, Falling Down.

    3. Loyalty to Loyalty - Cold War Kids
Fun and depressing at the same time. It's pretty similar to Robbers and Cowards, but it's definitely more uptempo. Tracks to check out: Against Privacy, Something Is Not Right With Me, Every Valley Is Not A Lake.

    2. The '59 Sound - The Gaslight Anthem
Bruce Springsteen + Tom Petty + Social Distortion = Gaslight Anthem. They're grouped with a lot of popular groups, like Rise Against, but they are much better, much deeper than their contemporaries. The '59 Sound is fantastically written. Tracks to check out: Great Expectations, The ’59 Sound, High Lonesome, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.

    1. Alopecia - Why?
There’s something very intriguing about the way Yoni writes and sings, you never feel like it’s directed at an audience, or at anyone in particular. It’s like he’s talking to himself or nobody at all. Definitely my album of the year. Hard to pick highlight tracks, but I really enjoy The Vowels pt.2, Good Friday, Fatalist Palmistry and By Torpedo Or Crohn’s, though there’s really no weak track on the album.Elephant Shell

  • How I Found Out About My Top 50

    23 mai 2008, 4h17m

    1. The Hives
Saw them play on David Letterman in 04, was hooked. Began collecting albums shortly thereafter.

    2. Alien Ant Farm
Again, I believe I saw them on Letterman in 2001. I got ANThology shortly after that, and collected each new album as it came out.

    3. Bon Jovi
Hard to say, I've been listening to them for a good 12 or 13 years. I think I heard Livin' on A Prayer on the radio when I was with my dad, and he let me listen to his Crossroad CD. Been listening ever since, except now I have all their albums.

    4. Oasis
Kind of a funny story actually. They were one of those bands I always meant to check out, but never did. At the talent show at my high school, a kid played the piano and sung Don't Look Back In Anger. I was impressed, so I thought I'd check out the real version, and was hooked on Oasis ever since.

    5. Matchbox Twenty
Haha, kind of embarassed to admit. My mom used to listen to them when I was younger, and they grew on me. Rob Thomas writes good lyrics.

    6. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
My mom again, I think. My parents have been listening to Tom Petty for longer than I can remember, guess it rubbed off on me.

    7. Jet
I was helping a friend of mine was his grandmas car when we were about 13 or 14, and we were listening to Get Born. Loved it, and bought it not too long after that.

    8. Tom Petty
    Same as 6.

    9. The Rolling Stones
Hmm. Hard to say, I used to listen to exclusively classic rock, and the best I can come up with is the Stones came with that, except I kept listening to them after I exited that phase.

    10. Wilco
Don't remember how the subject came up, but Tareth reccomended them to me in #megadoomer one day, loved them ever since.

    11. Crime In Stereo
WindWaker101 gets the credit for this one. First song I heard was Warning: Perfect Sideburns Do Not Make You Dangerous

    12. Bad Astronaut
Saw them on a website somewhere, I was intrigued by the name, and heard the song The "F" Word. Liked it a lot, bought two albums.

    13. The Subways
Letterman again, heard Oh Yeah. Got the album. etc.

    14. Bright Eyes
Again, one of those bands I mean to check out, I eventually just asked my friend Andrew if I could borrow his Bright Eyes CDs, and I enjoyed them.

    15. The Wallflowers
My friend Dylan reccomended them to me, and that's pretty much it.

    16. Green Day
Blah. I don't even know. I think I might've started listening to them because a friend of mine liked them a lot. I don't listen to them anymore, I wish they'd fall off my charts. D:

    17. Bomb The Music Industry!
One of the many reccomendations from ToasterFace. Thanks man. :D

    18. The Dandy Warhols
I think I first heard them on one of the mixes Huy made, enjoyed the song, which I believe was You Were The Last High. Got some albums.

    19. Minus the Bear
First introduced by Huy, but didn't really start listening until Darrien lent me a CD.

    20. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Heard Otherside on the radio a long time ago, but was finally given a CD just a couple years ago.

    21. OK Go
Madden 2003. The song Get Over It was in it, and I liked it alot. Always meant to get the CD, but never did, until last summer.

    22. Rob Thomas
Just because I like Matchbox Twenty, I checked out Rob's solo album.

    23. Treaty of Paris
Saw an ad for them on last.fm, was intrigued by the name and album title. I think my girlfriend bought me the CD for a gift, then I saw them live. Good band. :o

    24. The Offspring
A friend of mine really liked them, and we'd always listen to them in his truck, so I got the CD.

    25. Ramones
Hahaha, a friend of mine in 8th grade gave me a CD of theirs. I don't talk to her anymore, but still listen to the CD's she gave me.

    26. Steve Miller Band
Always liked Take the Money and Run, so I picked up his greatest hits.

    27. Cold War Kids
You're not gonna believe it, Letterman again. Hang Me Up To Dry.

    28. Rise Against
I believe I heard Paper Wings in Burnout 3, and bought the CD since I liked the song.

    29. Rocky Votolato
Huy again, put Portland is Leaving on one of his mixes, and I got the album.

    30. Daft Punk
Harder Better Faster Stronger. I think I heard it on a friends MySpace profile, and I enjoyed it. Checked out more of their stuff and enjoyed that too.

    31. Motley Crue
I had this NASCAR CD, and Kickstart My Heart was on it. I liked it so I got an album of theirs. I didn't think I listened to them this much though.

    32. The Weakerthans
I was browsing someone's profile, though I can't remember whose. Liked This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open a lot, it's actually my favorite song. Got an album.

    33. Why?
Gemini (Birthday Song) was Huy's top listened track at one point, so I checked it out. Loved it. Kid has some good taste. :P

    34. Blue Man Group
Saw their show. That's really all there is to it.

    35. Aerosmith
Stole one of my mom's CD's when I was 9 or 10, liked 'em ever since.

    36. The Shins
Hmmm.... To be honest, I really have no idea.

    37. AC/DC
See 35. I'm not a huge fany anymore though.

    38. The Darkness
I Believe In A Thing Called Love. Liked it. Got album.

    39. Pearl Jam
An impulse purchase, really. I don't like them all that much, not sure how they got this high.

    40. The Dillinger Escape Plan
Another impulse, bought Ire Works because I knew WindWaker101 liked them. Liked it though.

    41. The Fall of Troy
Andrew's favorite band, he got me into them.

    42. The Faint
freeindie.com, checked them out, liked them.

    43. Beastie Boys
My friend and his truck again.

    44. Radiohead
Got In Rainbows, just because it was free. Don't really like it, or the band. Again, not sure how they're in my top fifty.

    45. The Whitest Boy Alive
Heard Burning, loved it. That's all.

    46. Cheap Trick
Stole from mom way back when.

    47. Aesop Rock
    One of Huy's mixes, again.

    48. The Black Keys
    Uh, Huy. Again.

    49. The Slip
Ugh, I don't like to admit it, but it was Guitar Hero. Got Eisenhower. Good album.

    50. Electronic Noise Controller
    last.fm reccomendation.
