So weird. I originally got into M83 expecting a shoegaze sound as well. However, I don't agree with you that it's not there. I think it is. But it's mostly on the Dead Cities and Before the Dawn albums. Sometimes the guitar is actually used in that familiar fuzzy way, or it might just be the manipulation of the electronics that is shoegaze-esque. But otherwise, it's not an extremely overstated style in M83 overall. So, the tags are misleading.
