Awesome. I love that you actually gave it a try though. And yeah, I admit it's definitely it's own niche that probably requires specific and deep listening. Shangren is definitely my favorite out of them, but I know what you mean. I think Whispered are very good too but out of all of them they sound the least 'samurai-ish.' If anything, they remind me of Children of Bodom a bit.

Oh yeah, and WHISPERED. They're one of the main ones under that category. Here: http://www.last.fm/tag/samurai%20metal

Zenithrash, Onmyo-Za, Zuriaake, Shangren, Ego Fall, Tengger Cavalry, some of ChthoniC is considered to fall under that tag as well. Out of those I would probably recommend Shangren. Not all of those bands are great, I just find it interesting that it sort of has the whole "oriental sound" as something to actually define itself with.

I discovered samurai metal yesterday. Believe it or not, unlike viking metal and pirate metal, it's actually its own thing. Like, it has its own identifiable sound...to a certain degree.

I find it awesome that Elvis, Radiohead, and Dimmu are all on your played list. Those metal purist pricks would have a breakdown (no pun intended). XD

Mars Volta? Ew! Tsk! Other sounds that express my disinterest in that particular style of music! lol, to each his own however! So how do you feel about this piracy crackdown? Will the Golden Age of Pirates survive the purging?

Haha, not exactly, more along the lines of bands like Pg.99, Ampere, In/Humanity, and Reversal of Man. Its very jarring/noisy stuff but there is always quality riffing happening to keep me interested. Also, screamo drummers are fantastic.

I think the main problem is that you can buy their shirts in Hot Topic.

To be completely honest, I haven't listened to Opeth in ages. I've been keeping prog out of metal lately. I haven't been keeping up with grind releases either. Been listening to tons of late 80's early 90's metalcore. If you're interested in giving something like that a shot I recommend Creation is Crucifixion - In Silico. Other than that I've given into older screamo/emo bands. I haven't been listening to death/black/thrash metal lately either. I don't know if I'm just getting bored with it or I just find other genres to be more interesting but it seems to take a lot to keep me interested in those genres now.
