Far East Movement - "Dead Man Walking" is an awesome song. Just awesome. However, it's relatively rare! Finding it will mean you have the "Ai-Tunes Sampler" somewhere. It's nearly impossible to find this song... I couldn't even pull it up for the track list above! (Well, not yet anyway!) It's another one of those songs with an awesome beat and catchy lyrics. I'm not sure if I can name one thing about this song I don't like. It puts me in a good mood, gets me singing and dancing a bit, and it's generally uplifting. The story told in the song may impact people in different ways and has multiple interpretations. "Nowhere to run, nowhere to go, nowhere to hide when you're dead inside." Couldn't be more true. Life catches up with you eventually, now doesn't it? But if you're the one who is hurting and you're dear to me, you know I'd gladly take your place... even if it means being a dead man walking.

Megurine Luka - "Just Be Friends" is a Vocaloid song by one of my favorite Vocaloid artists, Luka! It's a very energetic pop/electronica song with some awesome Japanese/English mixed lyrics. As you can tell from the title, it's about breaking up from a relationship and just returning to being friends. It speaks of memories both happy and sad along with the emotions associated with all of those times. It's a reminder that there may come a time when you have to say goodbye and that not all romances lead to that "happy ending" that we all hope to find. I've had to say goodbye in the past, and it's never an easy thing to do... but sometimes you have to just be friends. Despite the sad message, the upbeat nature of the song is a reminder that when one thing ends another can begin, a lesson that we have all likely learned the hardest way.

Massive Attack - "Teardrop" came to me by way of the TV series "House." You'll recognize it as the song during the opening credits. You may not know it has full lyrics and a very sad message. It's a great background beat regardless, with a drum part that is reminiscent of a heartbeat. The words are cryptic and tragic. To me it is a song of sadness, but a song of necessity. I find myself drawn into the heartbeat and lost in its sound. It's a song of blind, unknowing love. It's a song of tragedy. To me, it is a song of drowning in a personal hell that has manifested itself without my knowledge. The peaceful world around me crumbles into disaster and despair, and nothing except a single teardrop escapes from my emotions. I love it for its sadness, and I hope that everyone has a sad song that they love as much as I love this one.

Vertical Horizon - "Finding Me" is a cry for understanding. The chorus starts with the line "Don't tell me how to be 'cause I like some suffering," and it has applied to me on many occasions. I've been through some difficult times in my life, and in those times I often need to brood on my own and sort out my own emotions. I don't need people telling me what I need to do or not need to do, I need a time to contemplate my own desires. We all know that "it'll be okay" but sometimes we don't want to hear it. This song is the musical embodiment of those desires. It's a message that says, from me to you, "Thank you for caring, but let me have my moment." Sometimes we all just need that moment, no matter how severe the emotion behind it is. It's also notable that this song is very catchy and has a simple but great guitar line. ^_^

FLEET - "My Material" is a light pop-rock song that I can't remember how I found. The band FLEET as a whole is actually really good, and the lyrics in all their songs (in Japanese) flow beautifully with the beats they lay down. This song is a quiet, moving song that I have yet to translate, but I love it all the same. I like to close my eyes and just let the music carry me like a boat floating down a gently-flowing stream. I envision myself lying on my back, watching the sky as I float along, trees linking the edges of the river banks and hanging serenely on the edge of my vision. All is at peace with the world when I drift to this place, seeing the clouds as they lazily wisp by in the azure, crystal-clear sky. The sun is behind me, lightening the world with a comforting smile. Actually, a lot of FLEET's songs make me feel this way... maybe that's why I find them so enjoyable. I only hope that you enjoy them as much as I do!

Owl City - "Dear Vienna" is another creation from the esteemed Adam Young. As with many Owl City songs, the meaning can be rather variable. Musically, it's a very catchy song done in typical Owl City style, and I'd listen to it just for the good beat and smooth vocals. However, I like the lyrics in equal proportion with the rest of the song, even if they may seem a little cryptic! We all have a different view on the world, and that view changes from moment to moment depending on the emotions and the situations. Sometimes you just take a step back and look at it all as a whole, trying to make sense of it all in some way. I hear this song and I contemplate the world around me. I think of my friends, both those that are here and those that have come and gone. I look up into the skies... not in search of an answer, but just to gaze up into the sky and wonder. Sometimes we're far from the things we hold most dear, sometimes not. In any case, this song makes me think of all of the above.

Cafe Tacuba - "Volver a Comenzar" is a song in Spanish that I stumbled onto thanks to the game "Little Big Planet." The association with the game ended there, as I found myself very fond of the song. Once I translated the lyrics, I loved it even more. The song speaks an awe-inspiring message, going along with the title (translated as "Starting Over"). We all have made mistakes and some of us even hold regrets for those mistakes. I have never been one to hold a grudge or have regrets, or at least I aspire to such. But like this song indicates, even if I could go back I wouldn't be able to repair the mistakes I have made. Nothing in the past can ever be changed, so all that's left to do is summon the strength to apologize or forgive. I have made countless errors throughout my life, some of them mundane, some of them direly serious. Nothing I can do will change that. I ask only for the ability to carry on, to forgive and to be forgiven. Si volviera a comenzar no tendría tiempo de reparar.

Kurosaki Maon - "The Place of Hope" was discovered while watching the anime series "High School of the Dead" as the eighth ending track. It got stuck in my head immediately, after which I proceeded to listen to it (and the rest of Kurosaki Maon's music) almost obsessively. With a solid rock and roll beat, this track is hard not to listen to! The song's message to me has always been that of charging forward into an uncertain future. Nobody knows exactly what the future will bring, but that doesn't stop us from rising to meet it. I can't begin to speculate how it will all end, but on that day I will be there to meet my fate... and hopefully I won't be there alone. Hopefully I won't have to make the journey alone either. Life is a battlefield that we all must traverse, although the battles will be different for all of us. To me, the place of hope is every shining hill along the way where I can stand and look down at my past and future, smiling all the while. Never am I there alone.

Capsule - "dreamin dreamin' makes me happy. It's a happy, happy trance song with great Japanese lyrics and a very, very catchy beat. I can't claim to be a good dancer, but this one always gets me up and dancing regardless. It's just... undeniably cheery and energizing. It's another track that I've played over and over again on many occasions. The lyrics (in Japanese) speak of love, freedom, dancing, and happiness. It's all about emerging from that darker path back onto a joyful, happy road. In one word: Happy. That's the message I almost always pull from this song; just "Happy." Endless happiness, over and over again. Even if we are all just dreamin' dreamin'!

Tsuneo Imahori, Fila Brazilia - "Forever Broke (Fila Brazilia Remix)" comes from the "Music For Freelance" CD, a remix CD of tracks from the anime series "Cowboy Bebop" and one of my favorite albums. It takes the original guitar from The Seatbelt's "Forever Broke" track and combines it with a steady, grooving bass beat and electronica effects. Devoid of lyrics, it makes for one of the best background music tracks that I have ever heard. It is probably one of my all-time most-listened tracks... I used to play it on repeat at night to help me drift off to sleep. Hey, it was at a time in my life when I was pretty much "forever broke." Wait... that hasn't changed all that much, has it? It's the life of adventure though, and it's never about the money. That's why when you look into that nearly empty wallet or shake the three coins in your coin savings jar, all you need to do is shrug, kick back, and listen to the sounds of "Forever Broke." ^_^

Genki Rockets - "I Will" tells a tale of passionate love from one to another, told over a track of pop/electronica sounds and a light, dazzling voice. What would you do for the one you hold most dear? That one person would mean everything to me, and there is nothing I wouldn't do for them. I will go to the ends of the earth, through all the pain and agony of life... I will do everything. I will, I will... well, that's how the song goes! It always makes me happy and if I can drift, I find myself in a dreamy state with the woman of my dreams, dancing on the very air itself. I visualize the sun shining brightly on us as we dance in the air of an endless field of green trees and multicolored flowers. The wind blows gently around us, our pure white clothing swishing around as we dance. Eyes sparkle and dazzle, smiles are permanently fixed to our faces, and nothing in the world could possibly break our attention from each other. That's the vision that crosses my mind nearly every time!

Plumb - "Stranded" is a love song if there ever was one. It has a steady rock/pop beat with Plumb's female vocalist rockin' out the lyrics, so it's catchy and easy to listen to. Nobody wants to be stranded and away from the one they love, and that's the gist of this track. It's about trust... knowing that the person you care for the most feels the same way for you. They'll be waiting for you over any distance and through any hardship. It's a level of endearment that not everyone gets to experience in their lifetime, and I hope one day I will have a love like that. A love that's pure and true with trust and loyalty, where both of us want nothing more than to be together and go on life's adventures together. Without that someone, we're all just stranded on an island, deep in the ocean of our emotions and waiting for the tidal wave of life to crash down and sweep it all away.

The Dangerous Summer - "The Permanent Rain" rocks. It's an awesome alternative song and probably my favorite song by the band. I can't remember how many times I've thought "So where the hell's my hope?" in the past. It's an anthem about fighting for your future, or at least that's what it seems like to me. Sometimes it seems like a hopeless venture to try and reach for your dreams, even though there are people cheering for you and supporting you all the way through. Often enough you just have to hold strong and fight through. As the lyrics say, "You know I've lost a lot, but I won't let this die." Life has been hell for me at times, but I haven't backed down or given up on anything I really want... and I have no intention of doing so! So hang tough, carry on, and rock out to this song.

She - "Make Me Real" is another great track brought to you by Lain Trzaska, a chiptune/trance artist of epic proportions. I'm fond of a lot of his work, and this track is one of my absolute favorites. A lot of She's music is ambient or vocal-less, but this is one that entails some well-thought vocals. It tells a beautiful yet sad story that can be interpreted in a couple of ways. I see it as a glimpse at a dream... a beautiful girl deep in my subconscious. She's the woman of my dreams, the one that I cannot find. She only exists in the realm of my dreams, and the only time I can see her is when I drift into that dream. She years to see me too, but she can only exist when I dream of her. But I can never be close to her... the moment the dream becomes my reality, I lose myself and disappear forever. What did her beautiful voice say to you?

Michael Andrews, Gary Jules - "Mad World" is a sad song that many of us have already heard in a lot of places, whether it be in the movie Donnie Darko, the Gears of War games, or the original song by Tears for Fears. I prefer the Gary Jules version myself as it's slow, haunting, and mind-numbingly sad. It is a mad world, isn't it? This song reminds me of all the hard times in my life and all the strife I have endured over the years. I had a number of hard times that I managed to pull through, all of which effected on my view of the world. It truly is a mad world out there, and we are just caught up in the spinning of the world. Madness may be down the street, on your doorstep, or in the people you trust the most. There is no happiness in some places because it simply has never existed. This song makes my eyes water a little bit each time and strikes a different chord in me every time I hear it. Tragic and beautiful.

KOVAS - "Go That Route" came into my possession thanks to the wonderful people over at [adult swim]. They released a free CD online called "Worldwide Renewal" that featured a number of songs, including this one. It's a minimalist hip-hop song with a very simple, steady beat and soft-spoken lyrics that just gets your head nodding to the beat. Seriously, the beat is one drum. That's it. But it works perfectly. The lyrics are fun and energizing, despite the fact that everything is said in a relatively quiet voice... nearly a whisper at times. Even the word "cake" is randomly thrown in after a chorus. It just makes me fade out and enjoy. It's also a fun song to sing along with. The lyrics don't have any overwhelming significance to me, but I like it all the same. Reminds me of those late nights watching [adult swim] throughout college and some of high school even. Back when life was relatively easy and enjoyable, right? Yeah. That's right. "And I'm just tappin', y'all, like patty-cake."

Ar Tonelico - "Psycho Dive" is featured, naturally, from the game Ar Tonelico. It is a very involved roleplaying game that involves a lot of special interactions between the main character Lyner and the three women he is somehow tied to. In order to further your relationship with any of these special girls, you have to "dive" into their minds and help them to unlock their full potential. To do this you must visit a "Dive Shop" and saddle into a special machine to see into the primal and passionate parts of their subconscious identity. As you are preparing, this track comes into play. It's upbeat and steady and makes me feel as though I'm preparing to go deep into a mental battle of my own. It pulls me to a place where I dream, and in these dreams I am capable of many feats outside of my present abilities. It makes me feel calm, prepared... even serene. It's a rather short track, but it's strong all-the-same.

Owl City - "I'll Meet You There" makes me drift off into a little universe of happiness all of its own. It's a song about love and devotion; a song about how someone special makes you feel and how far you would go for them. For as simple a song as it is, I find it to be deeply compelling and thought-provoking. The lyrics combined with the instrumentation makes for a floating, drifting song that pulls you deep into and and lets you calmly ride the surf as it carries you through to the conclusion. It makes me feel like love is true and real, and that love in its purest form knows no boundaries or limitations. No matter how difficult life can be, love can prevail over everything. I know it's sappy, but that's how the song affects me. "I'll meet you there; you could be anywhere." It's true. You could be anywhere. But I would find you and stay with you, and I hope you would find me and stay with me.

Filter - "Take A Picture" brings back memories of a childhood long gone. It's a slower, more tragic song with a chorus that haunts my mind even now. "You ought to take my picture, 'cause I won't remember." What of all the memories that have slipped away over the years? Did anyone take note of those times, or are they simply gone now that I have forgotten them? Every time a random memory comes back to me I relate to this song a little bit, and usually things only come back to me after I've seen something that sparks the memory. Although it usually makes me sad, this is also a song I enjoy singing along to. It has a dark message all of its own, but I enjoy it for my own reasons.

Takacha - "MOVIN!!" is a very happy track that always puts me into a good mood. I originally stumbled across it while watching the anime "BLEACH" and since then I have really enjoyed it. It's a very energetic song that will pull you up from nearly any funk and get you feeling good about life again. It brought me up many times when I wasn't feeling all that great just by the beat alone. The music video is highly recommended, as it adds to the humor and happiness of the track as a whole. There's also a splendid acoustic version that feels just as fun as the original and will have you grinning ear-to-ear as well!
