Thu 4 Mar – The Monster Ball Tour
Okay, so I’ll warn you now, I have a tendency to ramble on a little so please don’t hold it against me!
My Thursday was a strange one. I work nightshift so I was at work Wednesday night/Thursday morning, and by the time I got home I was bouncing off the walls. I was so excited I just couldn’t hold it in any longer. I managed to get about 3 hours sleep in the end. Probably wasn’t enough but I knew if I had any longer I wouldn’t be able to get ready and drive through to Newcastle in time.
Arrived at the Arena at about 20 past 7. Town was busy as it always is when there’s someone big playing, and finding a parking space was hell, so there was a bit of a walk to get there. Was meeting a friend of mine so waited at the bottom of the steps. It was cold, but my excitement and the whole atmosphere of the night distracted me slightly from noticing.
Must have got into the Arena around 7:40, Tickets got scanned, and it seemed to take forever for that scanner to confirm that our tickets were real and let us in! I was more hyper than ever at this point. Everyone saying I was like a kid who’d had far to much Red Bull and Sugar! I just couldn’t help it. All my excitement that I’d been building up for months just seemed to come flooding out.
I have to admit, I didn’t manage to catch Semi Precious Weapons. Not that I was too bothered. I’d googled them, and didn’t think much of them. But I just managed to walk into the Golden Circle as the lights went down for Alphabeat. It was the second time I’d managed to see them live and they didn’t disappoint. There didn’t seem to be that much love for them from what I could see. Just me a few other people dancing about. Me jumping up and down like a maniac. You’d never think I was 23!
There set compromised of “The Spell”, “10,000 Nights of Thunder”, “Hole In My Heart”, “Boyfriend” and “Fascination”. I sang each song loud and proud. Although the women in front of me didn’t seem too impressed, but if you’ve heard my singing you’d understand why! By the time they played “Fascination” the crowd seemed to wake up a little though. And managed to pull some energy together to shout Fascination in the right places! Next thing I know they’d finished and were walking off stage and the lights were coming back on. Can’t wait to see them again in April, They sound on good form!
By this time it must have been around half past 8. Everyone standing around chatting. Really getting fed up of Michael Jackson songs. I started to feel really sick. I hadn’t eaten anything all day, and made sure I had nothing to drink for a couple of hours before hand too (I didn’t wanna end up being bursting for the loo and missing something!) So this really didn’t help matters. As every MJ song finished, you heard the crowd pick up, and my stomach would start doing back flips. All this teasing was doing me no good. Then the lights went off and the curtain on the stage came down. I thought I was gonna explode with excitement. The atmosphere was electric. I’ve never felt anything like it.
The First thing for us to see was a short film of the lovely GaGa herself. The place was jumping by this time. You could feel everyone in the place was just on the edge, waiting to see their first sight of her. Then there was the countdown. . I’m still convinced I blacked out during the countdown as I remember seeing the number 7 on the screen, then the number 3!
So the countdown finished, “Dance In The Dark” kicked in and we got out first glimpse of GaGa. Okay it was silhouette version but it was still enough for that crowd to get even louder. From where I was standing, I could just make out her true outline. At this second I think my heart stop for a second. I was in ore, and I was preying for that curtain to go up. It seemed to take an eternity while she kept changing poses. Everyone dancing along to the song, but you could tell they were all apprehensive for when it finally did. Then we heard a male version (I think was Posh) asking the girls if they were ready, and the girls replying. As soon as you heard GaGa say the Marilyn, the curtain began the rise, along with the volume of the crowd. Everyone screaming. And we got to see the wonderful GaGa without her hiding behind anything. Standing on the top of a flight of stairs. Looking gorgeous. And from that moment the crowd was in the palm of her hand. The first set we were exposed to was a one that I’m sure was trying to re an act a New York back alley. Neon Lights. A Staircase. And a broken down car. As soon as the song had finished it was straight into the show, and GaGa informing us all of the story. Herself and her friends were on the way to the monster ball when her car broke down leaving them stranded. This is where we got a treat in the form of “Glitter and Grease”. A song which is previously unreleased. I’d heard clips of this on YouTube but it was good to see her perform it. And just made it clearer to me that she should hurry her ass along, get in the studio and record a version of it, as its fab! The majority of the people in the crowd around me seemed un impressed as they didn’t have a clue what the song was (more on them later) but I didn’t care less. I was dancing and singing like no tomorrow and this was only 2 songs in! After the song was finished we went back to GaGa who gave the impression she was going to try and fix the car. Walked over to it, lifted the bonnet up, and what was inside, only a mother f***ing piano. This just again confirmed how much of a genius she is, and how no one seemed to see it coming.
When she played the intro to “Just Dance” on said paino, that got the crowd moving, especially those who were still a little unaware of the previous song.
Now, from here on after, I will admit, my mind goes a little blurry. I can’t remember what outfits she had on for which songs, and in which set she sang each song, but I do remember the songs! So bare with me and I’ll try not to screw this up.
After “Just Dance” came "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich", "Vanity", "The Fame" and "LoveGame". By this time the Set had changed again, and we were now on the underground. Which of course had broken down. All this bother just to get to the monster ball. Is it really worth it? Oh I think it is.
During “LoveGame” she told the crowd about her big dick, while her dancers acted out showing everyone theirs. So to speak. I found this amusing but the stuck up bitches around me didn’t really get it! Why were they there I don’t know!
GaGa then paid homage to her Gay Boys and performed “Boys Boys Boys”. The song that I love, even though I’m a gay woman, but can never help but sing to it. So damn catchy. I love it! This was followed by “Money Honey”.
Now if I’m making this sound like it was song after song. It wasn’t. There was story in between. With GaGa talking to Posh (not Posh Spice, silly retards stood round me!) Also with little video snippets to distract us during the many wardrobe changes. Normally wardrobe changes would annoy me. But hers didn’t. Not once were we left with nothing. All 2 hours filled with something to keep us occupied and ready for our next hit of GaGa, as she seemed to be our drug that night.
Next was “Telephone”, which she introduced by saying earlier on in the year when she was in prison, and Beyonce called. Now at the time I didn’t understand this reference. It went straight over my head. Now seeing the “Telephone” video today I totally get it! I <3 that video. Genius! But back to what I was saying!
After “Telephone”, it took another track. Things started to calm down a little. Probably so she could have a rest. I was wrecked from all the dancing so god knows how she must have been feeling. Out came the piano and everyone calmed down and settled into “Brown Eyes” and then “Speechless” which she dedicated to Emily. Her biggest fan in Newcastle. And for a few minutes, everyone wished it was them she was singing too. Well actually it wasn’t just GaGa singing. The crowd sang that one, GaGa letting them take over in places. Watching that clip back on YouTube now makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. So moving. And this wasn’t just any piano she was playing. This was a piano that like playing with fire! Amazing!
It was also around this time when she was at the piano that she started talking to the crowd. And a whistle went off. Now everyone in the crowd wasn’t shocked by this. But GaGa was slightly taken back by it. And some good interaction followed. She had us all laughing, and it’s a moment I’m sure I’ll never forget. Normally I hate whistles at gigs, but this time, pure genius, and great timing!
So next came The Twister. And the moment of no turning back for my love of GaGa. The Living Dress that appeared once the Twister had swept through the set, destroying everything, left me speechless. I stood silent unable to move, in total ore of what my eyes were seeing. At first I just thought it was a normal dress, until the little voice in my head said “oh my god its moving”. All this while she sang "So Happy I Could Die". And as I sang along, that’s just what I was. So happy I could die. Strange I know, but if you were there and felt what I felt, then maybe you’ll understand. As the stage raised up, She was looking directly at where we were standing. It was amazing. I finally had a perfect view of her without hands and cameras getting in the way and that sight is burned into my memory forever!
A costume change again. Which didn’t surprise me, because she couldn’t really do a lot in the Living Dress. But when she returned, we got to see the aftermath of the twister. Devastation. Well in a Wizard of Oz kinda way!
I’m sure this is the point were we got to see the big razor blades on the stage and she told us all how she never fit in at high school. This reduced me to tears. And the freak in me finally felt she had somewhere to go. But as GaGa had said earlier. All the freaks were outside and they’d lock the fucking doors! So I felt normal for the first time in my life.
"Monster", "Teeth" and "Alejandro" all followed next. And when the first line of “Alejandro” kicked in, I was standing with both hands in my pockets. I didn’t realise I was til I was singing along and felt goose bumps cover my arms. It was though she was singing to me. Sad I know, but a girl can dream.
By this time, I was feeling the strain. Feeling light headed, sick, hot, getting cramp in my feet, but I knew there was still more to come, so just had to push on and hope I didn’t pass out. Which I didn’t thank god.
“Poker Face” came next which got the crowd dancing. As for those who hadn’t known the 3 previous songs. They sure knew this. GaGa telling us to jump and we didn’t even have to think about it. She was our puppet master! And none of us wanted the strings to snap!
Then was "Paparazzi" with that scary sea monster trying to attack her. Fantastic production. I’d seen clips of it, but it was so much better to see it with me own eyes!
Then came “Bad Romance” and I thought the roof was gonna come off the place. We finally made it to The Monster Ball and the crowd exploded. Everyone had their little monster paws up as we danced, jumped about and sang our way through to the end. And then before we knew it, GaGa was thanking us all. And it was the end L the lights came back on, and a quick look about about peoples faces, seemed that now they just felt lost. 2 hours had gone by so quick. But I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.
Now bad points before I sum everything up. And I know if there is anyone reading this you’ll be thinking “bad points, what bad points” well the bad points had nothing to do with GaGa, or her production. It was those mindless stuck up bitches I reported on earlier. At one stage of the gig, they were reading text messages out to each other while GaGa was going through the story! (Why get good tickets if you don’t want to be there?) This then buggered it up for them as when GaGa explained how she used to live with Posh, mindless blonde in front said “oh my god she used to live with Posh Spice?!?” I was ready to punch her in the back of the head there and then! But I didn’t. Next thing they started bitching about “when’s bad romance gonna be on” whinge whinge whinge. Then they ended up walking out before it even came on. Losers.
So from my experience there appears to be 2 main different GaGa fans. (Okay there will be more, but this is just for the sake of me making a point!) Those fans that like her music. And those fans who love her music, her individuality, and what she stands for! And I think there was a few people that night that ended up wondering why they were there. Because they’ve got their heads stuck so far up their own arses that they just don’t understand her! Why buy Golden Circle tickets if you’re not gonna appreciate them!
I left in pain. Soaking from the buckets of sweat my body had produced due to all the dancing. And a constant ringing in my ears which ended up lasting over 24 hours! None of these bad things I must admit. Because for 2 hours, one person made me feel like I’d never felt before. For 2 hours, I forgot myself, and all the problems that life holds. Nothing mattered. All that was important was being there. Feeling like we had a place to belong. And I never wanted it to end. Over a week later and I’m still on a high from it. One experience I will never forget. And one I never want to forget. If I thought I was a little monster before, I’m a little monster forever now. And I may have just written 3 pages worth of words about the gig, but I still don’t think the words to describe it fully have been invented yet!
And Hopefully I’ll get to relive it again soon
