Ear candy at its finest.
Maybe it's the geek in me. Maybe it's because my family rented the original TRON (along with the entire VCR) for my birthday–and I watched it as many times as possible in a 24-hour period. Perhaps nostalgia colors my view of the TRON: Legacy soundtrack. I don't care. I like this. A lot.
I had heard of Daft Punk before ever listening to them. But it wasn't until I saw TRON Legacy that I was gripped by their music–and I remain so to this day.
I consider this soundtrack to be the perfect electronic/orchestral amalgam. It's at once ambient and driving, showcasing its several compelling themes through a variety of interpretations. The sheer diversity of sound belies the electronica genre's reputation for static, uninteresting, unfeeling music.
If this work has a weakness, it's in the composition. Awesome as it sounds, the writing is rather flat. Repetitive themes and expected chord progressions will never carry this album beyond ear candy–no matter how delicious it sounds.
Even so, I can listen to this stuff repeatedly, and still want more. Time to explore more Daft Punk.
