NATE! you're alive! i've been great, school doesn't start until the 4th. i've been in vietnam for the past month and leaving to cali tomorrow night, then flying out to school in a couple of days. what about you? any new adventures happen? (i recall a couchsurfing expedition, did that work out for you?)

i've had a very interesting semester so far and i honestly can't believe that i've only been back for about a month; it definitely feels so much longer. my classes are insane this semester -- i have four lab classes, so i have little time to myself. i guess i'm content with my life, i'm learning a lot of things about myself. you know when you have all of those realisations at one point in your life and you can feel yourself slipping into new skin? i think it's finally time that it is happening to me, and while it's fascinating, it's also introducing a lot of emotional tensions and inner turmoil and because i'm still learning to deal with it, i feel like it's detracting from my schoolwork. :( so i'm just trying to stay alive and stay calm. haha, sorry for the depressing/introspective message. how about you?

That, sir, is as good a reason as any. Are you in England?

i did get fun home; however, i didn't have the chance to read beyond the first two chapters because i just got caught up with other things. it was funny that fun home and six feet under dealt with funeral homes. my friend let me borrow a bunch of stuff to read/watch that i haven't, but i read one act of this play called "the skin of our teeth" by thorton wilder (i think) and it's insane, i don't know what's going on, and i think i'll have to re-read the act again and the whole thing from start to finish because it's really interesting. anyway, i'm pretty much feeling the sophomore slump (although it's more COLLEGE SLUMP if i'm going to be completely honest here) and i've just been freaking out about a lot of things and under a lot of stress... which is why this comment is SO long. hello work avoidance! my friend did visit me for veteran's day this weekend (i don't get it off) and that was nice, but holy jesus, this semester has just gone by too fast for me to enjoy it.

Rufus Wainwright's version of Everybody Knows, huh? Interesting. You know who wrote it, right? If not, I'll let you know. The original version of it, to me, is still the best (unlike the same artist's rendition of Hallelujah, which I think Jeff Buckley nailed even over the original artist, and it's rare for me to admit such a thing).

ah, shooting film! you're a film major, right? i feel like that makes a lot of sense, based on what i remember from your tumblr. and obviously that describes you as a person since you are your tumblr... haha. i will hopefully maybe eventually get around to reading her stuff. i have a lot of work too, but i keep getting distracted by my friends. don't even know if i'm going to go into the city because i really need to study. the life of a science major. :'( some of my friends and i have started watching "six feet under" which is pretty good. i never bother to watch tv or movies, really (sorry for hurting the film major in you) so it's a nice change of scenery. but the episodes are SO LONG. at least i don't sleep (much). or, well, i don't allow myself to, at any rate.

i totally put a request on "fun home" so hopefully i'll be able to grab it this week and read it and let you know what i think. :') do you have any interesting plans?! there must be something exciting happening to one of us... and i totally sympathise with the commenting thing. someone is too used to the facebook features, huh? haha.

that's so awesome! i picked up a collection of her short stories once but never got to read all of it. i really loved the picture she had of herself on the back cover though; she's gorgeous. and oh my god, that's such a funny requirement. i go to a liberal arts school, too, but we have practically no requirements, except for a language class, a class that fulfills the quantitative analysis requirement, and a freshman writing seminar. then they let you run wild and it's pretty awesome. i washed my dishes today and i'm still in the midst of trying to clean my room up. i feel pretty productive! i don't really have any cool plans. i know a couple of my friends want to go to the city (of new york, in case we never established that before) and i might tag along, but it's pretty much just studying or doing whatever i want, which may include reading!

are you talking about the show, my so-called life? i've never watched it (i hardly ever watch tv... and this is probably an overstatement) but i'm pretty sure my friend/roommate from last year watched it. she's like a tv guru. and by miranda july, do you mean THE MIRANDA JULY?!?!! (lots of punctuation to indicate lots of shock) because that's BADASS and now you have to tell me why/how you get your fortune told by her. also i kind of have a love/hate relationship with sleep, i hate to go to sleep but i hate waking up and getting out of life. first world problems much? and eh, philosophy, i took a class once and didn't really like it but maybe i just don't have the right mindset. the only thing i liked about the class was the number of attractive people in there. mmmm. and haha, los angeles, that's funny! although i will have to say that northern california is much better, and i'm totally not saying that because i'm from there.

i really do love the 90s, and i feel like i wish i could have been a teenager during that time. so much good music. i have had conversations with friends about this issue this week, so it's funny that we bring it up again. it was especially so 90s because i wanted to see if i could find it at our school library and the only copy that existed was on VHS. such a trip. i just took a nap and did not study for anything at all. i am a great student! school's been pretty hectic and i actually dropped my intro psych class -- i feel like a loser for doing that, but i feel so much better now, but i'll have to make up those lost credits elsewhere. despite having a week off, i have so much to do! my room's a mess, my papers are disorganised, i should read ahead for classes, and i need to start doing the application for studying abroad. are you doing that? i want to go to germany!

there are a surprising number of classes that incorporate the graphic novel into their syllabus, it's kind of great. i know my friend's women's studies class required another reading from the author of persepolis, i think. we read a comic for my german class, it was pretty funny. it's called "maybe, maybe not" in english and there's a film adaptation that is SO 90'S. i just couldn't take it. other than that, how've you been? i'm "studying" for my german quiz, but i get a week off so that'll be exciting.

i found out there's a class at my school that deals with comics and graphic novels. it sounds badass, but apparently it's a class that's in high demand, only taught some years, and requires two intermediate english classes before being able to take it -- it's a senior seminar. as a biology major, this is sadly out of the question for me, but i thought you would be interested in knowing. plus, one of the books on the syllabus was the one you just told me about!
