What underlies a lot of this apocalypticism I think, beyond, you know, the real economic and environmental apocalypse, and what I take Iyer to be getting at, is how culturally omnivorous we’ve all become. There’s just not that much time or reason to ‘become who you are’ when there’s always already some fine-tuned artistic mediation of your feelings out there. And if you do ever try to create something of value it almost inevitably winds up as a regurgitation of whatever you’ve consumed given that your identity was only ever founded on consumption in the first place. The exception that proves the rule to me is the stuff written by Tao Lin/Muumuu House in which prototypical college-educated ‘hipsters’ inexorably and pitilessly reveal themselves to be absolutely empty in the most affectless prose possible. This piece by Marie Calloway is exemplary (and also the most soul-destroying thing I’ve read in a long time): [http://muumuuhouse.com/mc.fiction1.html]

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Finals are driving me up the wall. How are things going in Virginia, by the way? Anyway, yeah I can definitely see the Sevigny resemblance. I think it’s that they have a very similar kind of lived-in sense of what it is to perform for someone. There’s also this: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wFahJRZG2VE#!] The whole “post-Internet” tumblr aesthetic thing that Grimes connects herself with is really interesting and honestly seems to be another consequence of the idea that the only “authentic” creative options left are a) arid collage or b) expressing in some way the impossibility of actually expressing anything. There’s a nice little (non-)manifesto that Lars Iyer wrote about this vis-à-vis literature here: [http://www.thewhitereview.org/features/nude-in-your-hot-tub-facing-the-abyss-a-literary-manifesto-after-the-end-of-literature-and-manifestos/]

Haha, that Lynch video is the most hysterically unnerving thing since die Antwoord. I think it most reminds me of the short films from Home Movies in its earnestness. Here's a good example if you're unfamiliar: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uaaF83eVig] Speaking of music and/or videos though, you should definitely check out the clip that Grimes did for Oblivion if you haven’t already. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtH68PJIQLE] Also, have you heard of/listened to Mykki Blanco? He doesn’t have much out currently but what’s there is pretty great, ‘Betty Rubble’ especially. [http://soundcloud.com/mykkiblanco] Also also, how did I just find out about ‘Fickle Cycle’? It somehow actually sounds like the abstract idea of Animal Collective.
