So, according to last.fm, these are my top listened to albums of 2010 (not necessarily my favourites).
Yeasayer – Odd Blood. 429
Wavves – King of the Beach. 354
Broken Bells – Broken Bells. 261
Pendulum – Immersion. 240
Noisia – Split the Atom. 218
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs. 216
Here We Go Magic – Pigeons. 176
Bear in Heaven – Beast Rest Forth Mouth. 155 (Technically 2009 release, but last.fm in their top of 2010 charts includes from October 2009. The album also saw a 2010 UK. I picked it up around the UK release).
Miike Snow – Miike Snow. 151 (The same as above).
Tame Impala – Innerspeaker. 146
Yoav – A Foolproof Escape Plan. 145
So, to me this was my favourite albums of 2010 that I listened.
11. Yoav – A Foolproof Escape Plan.
Of my top 11 for 2010, this is probably my most surprising find of 2010. I went to a local Zebra & Giraffe gig and found that this guy was playing before them. I’ve never heard of him, but his set was incredible! This album is fantastic. The simplistic rhythmic guitar jamming and thoughtful composition makes it numero 11.
Favourite Song: Greed
10. Bear in Heaven – Beast Rest Forth Mouth
This album is awesome for 2 reasons. One: Lovesick Teenagers. Such an awesome tune. Drudging ambient electronica. The chorus of the song invokes a floating feeling. The second awesome part of the album is when you get to the end, to Casual Goodbye. Once the reprise kicks in to Lovesick Teenagers’ chorus, the album closes perfectly. Easily the best reprise ever.
Favourite Song: Lovesick Teenagers
9. Tame Impala – Innerspeaker
Psychedelic rock for the 21st Century. Ultimate summer chill music. Happy feel good vibes.
Favourite Song: Solitude is Bliss
8. Miike Snow – Miike Snow
This album is perfect. It’s rare that I find an album where I enjoy each song. I can listen this from front to back and I won’t skip a song.
Favourite Song: Silvia
7. Pendulum – Immersion
I had high expectations for this album (In Silico is still my most listened to album). Although it felt like it was a rehash of In Silico (with more cheese synth), it remains a solid album. Pendulum branched into newer genres, like Set Me on Fire and the almost ballady Encoder. The Island pt.2 is what makes this album.
Favourite Song: Island pt.2
6. Noisia – Split the Atom
I like the recent trend of electronic artists to expand into several genres in one album. Split the Atom is what Immersion should’ve been. It has electro, dnb and dubstep (I like to group this into ‘bass’ music), but more polished en grittier. And less cheese.
Favourite Song: Thursday
5. Wavves – King of the Beach
When I listened to a few songs, I loved the immediate catchiness of it. It got it, thinking I would quickly retire from the overdose of the beach punk pop. I listened, sang along, sang along even more, then instantly it switched from a pop album to a grower. Then I realized how good this album actually is under its veneer of pop/punk vibes.
Favourite Song: Post Acid
4. Broken Bells – Broken Bells
I love Dangermouse. Everything he has touched I loved. And Broken Bells is no different. With James Mercer, they created a solid listening experience. As with Miike Snow, I feel there is no bad song on this album.
Favourite Song: Vaporize
3. Here We Go Magic – Pigeons
This album is a grower. It definitely is. I love the ethereal textured sounds of the album. It’s been looping my car for quite a while. The flow is also splendid, with the album almost flowing away at the end.
Favourite Song: Collector
2. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
I’m a melody man. The melody is way more than lyrics. Lyrics are an afterthough when I listen to music. But Arcade Fire made me love the lyrics. They sing stories. While some might argue the content of the album is quite lame. “Hmmm, let’s sing about life. Let’s sing about the suburbs, the urban sprawl, our urban jungle, etc, etc”. They pull it off quite well. The best roadtrip music by far. As with Bear In Heaven, this album has one of the most incredibly reprises. The last song (Suburbs Continued) seals it. The perfect album to just lie about and soak in life.
Favourite Song: Rococo
1. Yeasayer – Odd Blood.
By a mile, my favourite album of 2010. “Middle eastern psych snap gospel” as they themselves describe it. Such a fresh sound. More psychedelic. I think 2010 is psychedelic year. So much classic tunes on the album, Ampling Alp, I remember, Rome, O.N.E. to name a few. The whole album is a trip. Listening from front to back.
Favourite Song: Rome.
That’s it for 2010! Next year, I’m trying to keep to my plan of getting the latest releases to stay atop the bandwagon.
In 2011 of the top of my head I'm looking forward to these albums:
Silverchair, Isochronous and White Lies
