This Journal Entry is about Self-Reference

Occasionally artists can be heard mentioning their own names in song lyrics. Reasons for this might be:

Blatant Self Promotion: The artist wants to make sure you know who you're listening to so that you can buy the right CD next time you visit the record store. The name is mentioned several times throughout the song and is impossible to miss. Examples: Head Up by Deftones, where guest vocalist Max Cavalera contributes to the chorus by shouting the name of his band Soulfly at the top of his lungs.

Something for the Fans: If you blink you'll miss it. A direct reference to the name is inconspicuously placed somewhere inside the song lyrics, and it's possible to listen the song several times without noticing it. Examples: The Return Of Jackie And Judy by the Ramones. Set The World Afire by Megadeth.

Showing Off Their Songwriting Skills: The artist cleverly inserts an indirect reference to their own name. Proud of their craftmanship the artist generally makes no attempt to keep it hidden. Examples: Breakdown by Guns N' Roses, or my recent favorite: 地下室の渦 by 矢井田瞳.

Illusion of Honesty: Song lyrics don't necessarily correspond to the singer's true actions, feelings or opinions. Nobody thinks Nick Cave is a murderer just because he sings about killing people on Murder Ballads. But if artists suddenly refer to themselves by name it seems like they really mean what they're saying this time. Examples: Lucretia by Megadeth. 'Twas on my Birthday night by Cocco.

Unimaginativeness: The artist can't be bothered to be very creative so they use the same name for themselves, their debut album and a song off their debut album. Examples: Iron Maiden. Is there anyone else? Black Sabbath would almost count except the words Black Sabbath don't actually appear in the song Black Sabbath.
