Thom's Best Of 2005

1. System Of A Down- Mezmerize/Hypnotize - The whole thing is just amazing. Not gonna see an album like that again, just awesome song by awesome song. Top marks.

2. Bon Jovi- Have A Nice Day- A massive return to form- their best album since These Days IMO. Anthemic rock songs, and not a stinker to be found- even the bonus tracks are brilliant!

3. The Darkness- One Way Ticket To Hell…And Back- I wanted to hate this so much, but after seeing the Classic Rock review and collecting Nectar vouchers so I wouldnt have to pay full price for it I got it…and love every second of it. Great songs, awesome production and it doesn't outstay its welcome. Damn them

4. Porcupine Tree- Deadwing - Just brilliant. Can't really add more than that. People should put down NME turn off mind numbing garbage like Coldplay and listen to this amazing band.

5. Billy Idol- Devils Playground- Quite a good comeback then! Hard rocking goodness. The man is a God among men!

6. Nickelback- All The Right Reasons- OK I didnt think it was going to be as good as it was, and I only bought it for Dimebags last solo but it turned out to be their best album yet. 'Follow You Home', 'Animals' are just 2 of the amazing tracks on this.

7. Opeth- Ghost Reveries- Note to all the kids who think Trivium is the final word in metal. An immense prog-metal masterpiece.

8. Viking Skull- Born In Hell- Rock aimed straight to the balls. Sleazier than me and just as rockin' Any album with a song called 'Dirty Dirty Hole' was gonna end up in my top 10 quite frankly!

9. Judas Priest- Angel Of Retribution- Another brilliant comeback doing what they do best. Lochness lets the side down a bit though.

10. Foo Fighters- In Your Honour- At last! I always have found the Foo's to be a band where the singles are better, and their last album really dragged near the end- but this is brilliant. Best album theyve done yet IMO.

11. Bruce Springsteen- Devils & Dust- Another great acoustic driven album by The Boss. Reno is a bit of a shocker too!

12. Black Label Society- Mafia- Was in the top 10 earlier in the year, but its still great. Hope Zakk continues tradition and brings out another album in 2006.

13. Bullet For My Valentine- The Poison- Not emo. Metal. That is all.

14. Queens Of The Stone Age- Lullabies To Paralyze- Really enjoyed this from the get-go. Burn The Witch is inspired.

15. Rammstein- Rosenrot- Another awesome album from those wacky Germans. How they keep coming up with gold like Benzin and Te Quiero Puta! is beyond me.

16. Stereophonics- Language. Sex. Violence. Other?- Never saw this one coming. Don't mind some of the songs but stuff like Pedalpusher, Doorman and Superman are amazing and Dakota is probably one of the rock anthems of the year. Damn them as well.

17. Brides Of Destruction- Runaway Brides- Sleazier and punkier than their first album, takes a few listens to get into. Great stuff, shame Ginger didnt hang around to record some stuff.

18. Audioslave- Out Of Exile- Was quite a shock at first hearing Be Yourself and Doesn't Remind Me, but after that inital thing its a solid rock album. With your blatant fancy guitar work.

19. Soilwork- Stabbing The Drama- Metal goodness, the title track is superb, would have been better with some soloage though!

20. Roadrunner United- All Star Sessions- Just brilliant. All those metal icons on one album is a bit hard to take in though ("him?" "and him?")

But there was so much more in 2005 and am shocked it didnt make it on the list but here it is anyway…

Thunder- The Magnificent Seventh
Wednesday 13- Transylvania 90210
Nine Inch Nails- With Teeth
Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation- Mighty Rearranger
American Head Charge- The Feeding
Trivium- Ascendancy
Bruce Dickinson- Tyranny Of Souls
Fozzy- All That Remains
Turbonegro- Party Animals
Dream Theater- Octavarium
Alice Cooper- Dirty Diamonds
The Rolling Stones- A Bigger Bang
Seasons End- The Failing Light
Iommi- Fused
Disturbed- 10,000 Fists

Honorable mention goes to Lordi though- The Monster Show is awesome and in the top 5 of the best things I've heard this year…but its a best of!
