KFLA Update 4/7/09 - Seven Witches, Nikki Lang, The Higher, Nana Pancha and more!!!

Thursday, April 23rd
Seven Witches, Damcyan
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
Jack Frost is no newcomer to the metal scene. He has played in Savatage, Metalium, Bronx Casket Co. (with DD Verni and Tim Mallare of Overkill), Frost Bite, and of course, Seven Witches. Working alongside Frost on Seven Witches is Joey Vera of Armored Saint/Fates Warning/Anthrax). On his group’s latest, Deadly Sins, he doesn't abandon the classic metal format, he just intensifies it.

Wednesday, April 29th
Nikki Lang, Jack Littman
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
Though just 17, Nikki Lang is already a seasoned participant on the Los Angeles singer-songwriter circuit. Her debut disc, Time Has Stopped, is the culmination of a year of work including a collaboration with producer/film composer Jay Ferguson. Her tunefulness and poignant lyrics call to mind Regina Spektor, Feist, and Joni Mitchell.

"Nikki Lang is one of the most refreshing artists I've heard in a long time. Her voice and lyrics are mature beyond her years. As the casting director for the producers of the movie High School Musical I've heard countless young singers perform and Nikki is at the very top." - Dori Zukerman

Thursday, April 30th
The Higher, Company of Thieves, the Dandelions, Wendy Darling, Phonocast
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
Originally formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2002, the band have undergone a massive reinvention since their debut full-length Histronics dropped in 2005. Their newest, On Fire, was recorded earlier this year with Mike Green (Paramore, the Matches). The disc’s upbeat amalgam of emo, punk and R&B may catch some listener's off guard, but there's enough diversity on the album to please everyone from Jawbreaker to Justin Timberlake.

The Higher have already converted Epitaph founder Brett Gurewitz (who signed the band after seeing them perform just once) as well as fans all over the world–now it's your turn to get turned onto the Higher.

Thursday, May 7th
Cassie Steele
7:00 PM, $10
A natural performer, Cassie Steele has been a regular cast member on Degrassi: The Next Generation since she was eleven years old, growing up onstage as her character Manny Santos. At the age of thirteen Cassie wrote and recorded the song “Prayer,” which was used nationally to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and first brought Cassie’s musical abilities to the fore. A successful debut album, How Much For Happy? was released in 2005 and followed by two Canadian tours. Her latest, Destructo Doll, features ten original songs which reflect the life experience of a wise-beyond-her-years nineteen year old. The music rocks hard– really hard– at times, then transitions into a gorgeous mid-tempo sonic landscape.

Friday, May 22nd
Pure Underground presents Nana Pancha (CD RELEASE), La Banda Skalavera, Rudo Movimiento
8:00 PM, $20 advance, $25 at the door

Sunday, May 24th
The Constellation Branch, Picture Atlantic, Parade of Lights
7:30 PM, $10
From IndieVisionMusic.com: “The Constellation Branch is a four-piece out of Phoenix, Arizona, that has put together a unique 11-track CD that can be compared to mewithoutYou, Radiohead and Sunny Day Real Estate. They stand out a lot in this genre and sound different than anything I have listened to. They involve a lot of depth into each song lyrically and musically – they know how to bring each song to an epic climax with an eccentric vibe.”
