Since it's been over 6 months since I did a decent entry… here are some albums that'll probably make my "top ten albums of 2006" list. And then some older albums I bought recently.
2006 albums
Drum's Not Dead
Most likely to win my 'album of the year' award. It's really hard to explain exactly why I like it so much. The hypnotising effect it has on me? The focus on percussion? The fact that it reminds me of the Silent Hill videogames?
The weird thing is, up until last month I didn't even know they existed. Then I saw them live at some festival, and I was sold.
Favourite songs:
A visit from drum, The wrong coat for you Mt. Heart Attack
Dr. Lektroluv - Live at Extrema Outdoor 2006 and Lektroluv 007
Yes, two new albums from my favourite DJ this year. And to be honest, I think they're his best yet. Especially the live one, very yummy. That Fire in Cairo remix…mmm.
Pieces of the people we love
At first I didn't like it as much as Echoes (which I also bought this year) but now I'm sold. It's just so…happy and uplifting, very summery. I really like Get myself in to it and First gear. But I can't stand Calling me for some reason. Meh, nice album otherwise.
Also saw them live.
Musique vol. 1993 - 2005
I really only bought this for the additional DVD with all their video's. I just love the The Prime time of your life video.
Um, also saw Daft Punk live, and it was the best gig ever. See my Pukkelpop entry for more details.
Bring it on
Only bought it this week, and I think it's the first Belgian album I bought this year. What's wrong with me?
Anyway, it's very very catchy indie-electro-pop. Think of a more electronical Franz Ferdinand, think of a more playful Soulwax, and you have Goose.
The title track is also my favourite song so far, but I only gave it a couple of listens so far, so that could still change.
The Information
Haven't listened to this one a lot to be honest. I like what I heard, but I dunno, maybe I have to be in the right mood or something. Strange, because I really like Beck, and -guess what- I saw him live this year as well, and he rocked.
The Eraser
It's actually been a while since I listened to it, but I remember being addicted to The Eraser and Cymbal Rush. I quite liked most of the songs on the album actually, but I had this feeling of déjà-vu (déjà-entendu?) with some songs. That's not a good thing.
(and I sorta saw him live, with Radiohead heh)
Black Holes and Revelations
Yes, a Muse album I like, OMG!!!! (my friends know that one of my favourite things in the world is slagging off Muse, and especially their fans) And why do I like it? I still have no idea. I used to hate Take a bow and Knights of Cydonia, but now they're my favourite tracks on the album. I think I started liking Knights of Cydiona after I found out of what it reminded me of: FLASH GORDON!!! The album would make a great soundtrack for this movie: it's cheesy, over the top, and doesn't take itself too seriously (at least, I hope not).
I honestly don't understand some fans not liking this album…if you don't like change, well, just keep listening to the same music over and over again, or find another band that can do no wrong (until they release an album that's slightly different from their older stuff).
Oh, and I'll probably see them live in december.
other albums
Deep Cuts
Maybe I just need to get into this more, but right now a lot of songs on this album sound like really bad techno-jpop songs to me. And the rest is just too weird and just doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. I think that's another one of my problems with Deep cuts, some songs are dancy (although definitely more techno/trance like than electro as I know it), and at other times it's like, wtf is this song about? It's so…all over the place!! I think I can partly blame Liars for some of the criticism on this album, Drum's not dead is really, you know, an album, not just a collection of random songs.
It has a couple of nice songs, but overall, I don't like it at all.
The weird thing is, this album gets LOTS of praise, and I find it really difficult to understand that. I mean, I understand what The Knife tried to do with this album, but I just think the execution is very, very wonky. But I seem to be alone on this, how weird.
I suppose the funny thing is that I want to give their most recent album a try, I heard it's much darker. Dark is good.
Interieur Exterieur
Yeah, there seems to be some confusion over the Ming name on last.fm, the Ming I like is the belgian/swiss electropop duo. And honestly, these guys sound and feel more French than any French artists I know. Their music just reminds me of traveling through France, the weather there, the little towns, the big towns…
And um, the music isn't that bad. Think Stereo Total, and you know exactly what to expect.
No, haven't seen them live this year, I only saw them once, in 2003, as support act for…Stereo Total.
Baader Meinhof
Yes, I mentioned the Baader Meinhof thing before, but it's still the best one I bought this year. It's indirectly also the reason why Liars caught my attention, this album really made me appreciate percussion a lot more than before. I can't praise it enough, but I'm just going to say BUY IT and leave it at that.
Love songs of the hanging gardens
Very nice album, feels a lot like a softer, more introverted Fischerspooner.
A heavy nite with...
I mentioned ordering this in April. And yes, I got it. At first I was a bit disappointed with it, it wasn't as good as the songs I downloaded, but I learned to appreciate it over time. The last song, Mary, is just so completely different from the rest of the album, I love it. Really funny as well. Again, I would recommend this to people who like Fat Truckers. It's completely different, but sorta the same. Um, yeah.
The Dead 60s
Nice album, but a bit too short. I mostly like the songs with an organ in it. I like this reggea/punk fusion thing as well. But I haven't listened to the album that much, and I don't think I will. They were alright live though heh.
That's it for now. Next update will probably be the official 'top albums of 2006' entry. Although I doubt much will have changed by then.
