Give It A Name '07

Fri 27 Apr – Give It A Name

Right, I want to write a summary of what I thought of the bands, but I'm going to miss a lot out, due to the effects of alcohol (mainly friday), forgetfulness, or just the fact that I couldn't be bothered to watch them all. I'll write about the ones I remember..

The Used

They put on a very good show. For the song A Box Full of Sharp Objects, they made the crowd split down the middle, resulting in the biggest wall of death I've ever seen.. that was definitely the highlight of their set. I thought they performed very well, and should have headlined that day instead of..

HIM

My god, they were dire. Ville Valo didn't know the correct distance his face should be from the microphone, so any words you heard quickly faded out and back in again, which was extremely annoying. I don't know much about this band.. they had a good guitarist and keyboardist too, but the singer was just awful.

Senses Fail

They only played a handful of songs which I recognised, which was annoying, but they were still alright. Nothing that special. Buddy introduced a song saying something along the lines of "This goes out to Princess Diana's rotting corpse", which didn't go down too well. I think he was expecting a big laugh, but it just wasn't really funny..

Zebrahead

This band surprised me. I've seen a video or two of theirs, and they always annoyed me, but I quite liked them live. The vocalists are very good, and I thought they put on a good show.

Enter Shikari

Their set was most definitely the most fun I had over the whole three days. It was completely manic, the crowd was huge and insane. The atmosphere was just fantastic, I just wish they played more songs as their set seemed a bit short. Shikari themselves were fantastic, and coupled with just loads of random moshing and human pyramid building made them easily the best band of the whole weekend.

Saosin

I felt a bit sorry for Saosin having to follow Shikari. They were alright, but I was expecting a bit more from the vocalist than he gave.. in live songs I've heard before, his voice was more powerful than it was on Saturday, but they were OK.

Motion City Soundtrack

I'll definitely have to check more of this band out.. I'd never heard them before, but they were a lot better than I was expecting. I was impressed by the singer's voice, and to a slightly lesser extent, his hair. I didn't know any of their songs but I'll download some of their stuff soon.

The All-American Rejects

I thought they put on a good show.. the singer was a good crowd entertainer, though I wasn't sure why he swore every other motherfucking word. I don't listen to much of this band but they played a fair few songs I recognised.. Dirty Little Secret, Move Along and Swing Swing to name them. A pretty solid performance.

Brand New

I really was expecting more from them.. the singer was terribly bland and hardly spoke to the audience, whenever he did he sounded like he was bored, as was I. I was also hoping they'd play more old stuff, but they stuck to their new material. I left early because I was bored and tired, and was probably going to fall asleep in the middle of Earl's Court if I stayed there.

Boys Like Girls

Wow. Just.. wow. I'd never heard of this band before they took the stage, but they were amazing. The singer has a fantastic vocal range, he can sing low on his own, or high notes with the bass player backing up singing low, and they blend together perfectly. I wish I knew their songs before I came, but next time they play in London I'll definitely go see them again. Brilliant performance.

The Receiving End Of Sirens

For a band with only one bassist, and three guitarists, you might have thought that you would be able to hear at least one guitar over the bass.. but you'd be wrong. Perhaps their sound tech had it in for them, but all you could hear was the guys voice, the bass and drums. The only time you could hear any guitar was when high notes were played.. but even then you only heard the one guitar. It was pretty ridiculous and ruined their set. I was looking forward to seeing them play Planning A Prison Break, but their instrument troubles spoiled it all.

The Automatic

This band annoyed me slightly.. I wanted them to be rubbish, so I could hate them, but they were actually alright. They're not my style of music, but they weren't half bad live. Pennie is clearly insane, but it was good.

Jimmy Eat World

I was really disappointed they didn't headline, as it meant my efforts to get as close as humanly possible could only go so far, seeing as there were still plenty of AFI fans waiting for them to come out, but I still got very close. I thought they played a great set, especially when Jimmy brought out an acoustic guitar and played Hear You Me, which was brilliant. THye played a new song called Big Casino, which sounded very goood, I can't wait for their new release. I left shortly after as I had no desire to see AFI, and I thought Jimmy was a great way to end a manic 3 days. Only my second time seeing them live but certainly not my last.
