Pondering Beachwood Sparks and Once We Were Trees

It's probably not a good thing that the thought that comes to mind most frequently when listening to Once We Were Trees by Beachwood Sparks is "Gosh, this is a long record." I used to pick up recommendations from newspapers and magazines. I think this purchase followed a review in the Guardian or the Sunday Times and I think reference was made to the Byrds. If it wasn't, it should have been as that is the band that seems to most inform this effort. That would be the Byrds after they invented country rock but still a little high on hippy dust.

I only like just over half of what's on here as this is one of those albums one can admire but not love. The best tracks are those that veer towards country, some almost bluegrass. When they stray too close to psychedelia, it becomes just so much noise to me. An interesting collection but I'm struggling to say much of anything about it and like the aforementioned thought that comes to mind most frequently, that can't be a good thing.
