Albums obtained in 2007

As far as I can make out, the below list contains all the albums I bought or was given in 2007.

Definite highlights were DARTZ!, Tellison, Encyclopedia and of course Radiohead.

This is an updated journal, the original was just a list. I have added some comments this time, and these are they:

Bat For Lashes
Fur and Gold
(2007)
Quite a dark and haunting record in places, but oh so catchy from the opening track 'Horse and I' onwards. She has been nominated as Best Breakthrough Act at the BRIT Awards, such a shame that the ever-annoying Mika will take it instead because Natasha Kahn (Bat For Lashes) should win it easily.

Biffy Clyro
Puzzle
(2007)
I was really looking forward to this one, it was a bit of a disappointment to find them turning into a Foo Fighters clone. Nothing at all wrong with the Foos, the Foos are great, but they do already exist.. This is still a good album though and worth having.

Blur
Leisure
(1991)
I've been looking forward to filling in the Blur back catalogue, and so was a bit disappointed when this album turned out to be a bit rubbish really. 'She's So High' and 'There's No Other Way' are the obvious stand outs, but that's about it. Maybe I should give it more of a chance.

David Bowie
Best of Bowie (Disc 1)
Best of Bowie (Disc 2)
I was also rather pleased I made the effort in getting some Bowie, everyone needs some Bowie in their life. There isn't any point writing anything about the music, it has already all been written, the guy is a fucking genius.

DARTZ!
This Is My Ship
(2007)
Fun. Energetic. Good for your brain. DARTZ! Laser Eyes is such a good tune, even without many lyrics.

Encyclopedia
So Hot Right Now
(2006)
Fun as well! Uplifting sound and lyrics, and bizarrely not as well known as they should be. Would sound great on the radio in the summer.

Gomez
How We Operate
(2006)
I'm fairly convinced that Gomez are underrated by almost everyone, although I'm yet to get two of their albums. Love the first track, 'Notice', and the rest of the album ain't half bad either. Very laid back.

Paul Hartnoll
The Ideal Condition
(2007)
I got this for 'Patchwork Guilt' because that track is so great, and I expected a CD full of electronic stuff like that. What I got was a much more varied collection of songs, which I can't even classify really without further listening. Maybe I'll update this when I have.

Kings of Leon
Because of the Times
(2007)
They really came of age with this one, 'Fans' was all over the radio last year as you all know and deservedly so. Now they get to headline Glastonbury! If you haven't discovered these guys for yourselves, do so now.

Kubichek!
Not Enough Night
(2007)
A couple of catchy songs in that edgy 'indie' style (yeah I hate the term too but what else is there), a bit like DARTZ! in a way but with less upbeat songs perhaps.

Lemon Jelly
Lost Horizons
Very good album for kicking back with, late at night when you're head is a bit screwed up with tiredness or drink or a night of loud rock music. Some of the samples repeat too often, especially in 'Space Walk', but overall you should have this one.

Massive Attack
Blue Lines
(1991)
and
Mezzanine
(1998)

I amazed myself at how long it took for me to get these two. Do yourself a favour and get both now, okay?

Radiohead
In Rainbows
(2007) (downloaded - I also got the CD in Jan'08)
Everyone has this so you all know how good it is - and if they haven't got it then they won't be on Last.fm reading this.

The Shins
Chutes Too Narrow
(2003)
Ideal sunshine album, I was listening in the car the other day on the first decent day without wind/rain that we've had in months. Uplifting.

The Shins
Wincing The Night Away
(2007)
I'm not as familiar with this one yet as I got it about the same time as Chutes Too Narrow, and was getting into that before starting here - then got sidetracked. Needs more listens.

Sigur Rós
Ágætis Byrjun
(1999)
What a great album, Sven-g-Englar is just fantastic. I need to listen to this more, it is the most under-listened of the three I have.

Sigur Rós
( )
(2002)
Imagine you are in Iceland, all alone in a desolate landscape alongside an ice-cold lake with the cool air breezing by and snow on the hills, sun high in the sky, the whole thing taking your breath away. That's how this album feels.

Teenage Fanclub
Grand Prix
(1995)
A let-down. And I didn't get it for the album name! Somehow I'd got the impression from people/websites/etc., who all said it was a great album of the 90s. It just isn't.

Tellison
Contact! Contact!
(2007)
This is just a great album of fun indie pop songs, it will forever be a mystery why The Hoosiers, The Feeling, etc. are all huge and Tellison are not. Life just isn't fair sometimes. 'Gallery' is quite possibly the song of the year, starts off repetitive and a bit boring, then after a couple of minutes it really kicks off and infects your head - then you listen to it again with different ears and find the brilliance of it.

(Updated 10 Feb 08)

Not a huge list, but the 2008 one will be which is why I'm going to do journals for that month by month if I can, this is going to be such a great year for music.
