Diabelli variationen geben leider nichts..

My ears hurt a bit after that The ocean album, I'll check them out another time....thinking my time with metal's just about ended, particularly unique bands aside. Once it stops having much impact, the production just kinda sounds like shit...

Audacity is a small, free download that I recommend...if you're interested in clipfix, you basically amplify -10 decibels, use clipfix from a 90-95% threshold, reamplify (if you want to; I personally down't mind if a few peaks clip and there's usually 3-5 very loud beats afterwards) and a nice low pass filter to cut down on the treble clipping and cymbal gain. I'll give a point of comparison based on some remasters I did.

In regards to Maiden... I avoided them my entire life too because of Satanic claims. So after my de-conversion... Maiden was another band I immediately checked out. And yeah, Maiden is easily some of the best metal out there! Also, I avoided Megadeth too. When you and I used to trash talk those artist pages a few years ago I really did hate Megadeth because I had a hard time with Dave's voice. But during all that trolling I learned the music and discovered how awesome they really are, and now I really love his voice. lol. All these bands I missed out on growing up! And yet here you are still listening to Beethoven.. <sigh>... lol.

Yeah, I heard RTL from various sources, so it's not like I was oblivious to its existence. lol. I just didn't own it nor did I even think about nor care if I did own it. I was raised in a conservative Christian home... so my main focus back then was Christian rock and clean secular rock. The "Kill em all" I had was a copy like you mention. "Jump in the Fire" seemed hellish, and so did "No remorse". I used to think that lyric was talking about Christ's death and Metallica saying "we don't care what it meant" -- it sort of haunted me in strange way because of my beliefs. BTW... I'm not Christian anymore, not that it matters... just sayin'. :D "Black" album was the first Metallica I bought that wasn't a copy. I wasn't a huge Metallica fan anyway, even though I liked them for the most part. I purposely avoided Load and Reload as well because of my previous beliefs. Around the time when St. Anger came out I lost my faith and it opened up lots of music opportunities for me.

I did not know that Judas Priest released a new album, but I don't think I will bother. I have enough with their classic stuff. I think many bands do not know when to retire.

    Vendredi soir
  • satchalicious

Alright... I rated RTL at 4.5(Cream of the Crop), but not 5.0(Desert Island). The reason--it's a fantastic album, but I could live without it -- if headed to that desert island. Actually, cream of the crop is perfect; desert island is just that extra level that goes off the charts.

  • satchalicious

Judas Priest on the other hand... I never had any of their albums as a kid. In fact, I just started listening to Priest last year or the year before that (I forget). So far, "Pain Killer" is the one that has hit me as my favorite. The other day I hit "Stained Glass" for the first time and I was blown away for what little I've heard so far.

    Mercredi soir
  • satchalicious

In regard to "Ride the Lightening". Long story short... it was the only Metallica album I didn't own when I was a kid. Back then money was tight (for any kid right?) and who knows what was competing with the next album I would buy. It wasn't until St. Anger came out when I picked up that album and everything else I was missing. I agree with all other Metallica fans that RTL is one of the best, and could easily be in my desert island list. But, the main reason I haven't rated it yet is because I just haven't thought about it. This could be partially do to the fact that it doesn't have any sentimental value for me, and it's never been a go-to Metallica album for me. When I'm in a Metallica mood I pull Puppets or Black or Justice. Again, nothing to do with what is best, mostly sentimental value more than anything.

That list is work in progress. Someday, I'd like to have all my albums rated and listed on RYM site. I have an iTunes playlist for each category in order to keep track of everything to make it easier. However, rating albums is serious business so I like to make sure I have it right before I link it to RYM site. :D

I've been exploring Audacity's clipfix for excessively brickwalled metal...I imagine vinyl rips of bands like Primordial are really damn hard to find, do you know how to use Audacity for extreme cases? I was able to make Omnivium by Obscura sound vastly better last night, probably my favorite open source program.

I haven't heard of Presto getting any bonus tracks, but I find the idea of extra disc space appealing for 2 CD concept albums and such. Wonder if it'll take off...hard to tell with current production trends.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD Rush is getting one of these for Presto...while I'm not a fan of Presto, I am curious if the quality difference makes it a decent ivnestment. Longer running time would be nice and I can see it being good for saving master files, but is there any practicality beyond that?

Yeah probably, it's better not to dwell on such conversations. Congratulations to your team, I know they're good. Part of my family will be happy for them, since we do have german roots. I really haven't watched anything because I don't care about soccer, the culture behind it here is super awful. People will curse every team, whether Argentina's team wins or loses. I agree with you there. I do think there's different ways to handle fame though. If you need to talk about your personal life all the time to do it, then music has a second place. This is what I see happening a lot with pop, but it also happens with hip hop. I don't have much of a problem with them becoming more popular, at any rate this will get them closer to my country and they might tour. Speaking of which, have you heard any of Martha Argerich's interpretations of classical music? (I just got reminded because few people in my country know who she is, she's from here but hates to be advertised and so on)

    Il y a 15 jours
  • KingsAndQueen

Well, maybe Lana does. But part of why she rose to fame so quickly was because her father was on the industry or had the money to put her there. I don't really care, I mean many popstars come this way or with reality shows, like Christina did. I think I have listened to her once in a while for the memories, but I don't expect to care for her new album or anything. I mean, not that listening to pop is any bad, much of what St. Vincent does is straight forward pop. It's the tabloid drama, that's what kept me away from Aerosmith for example and will keep me from Aguilera too, but it will not be as easy to get her down in my charts :P

Yeah I mean, I am not going to make an anti-Lana del Rey campaign and definitely the whole suicide thing is taken out of proportion. I just don't like it. I don't know. I feel like I don't even like the whole act. I'm becoming tired of certain stereotypes women choose to fit into to be successful stars. And it's not a feminist thing, I couldn't agree less with feminism nowadays. But it just looks like clones. Everyone does this Madonna thing: they start like good girls and soon enough they become "bad". Or make it look like they're in control of what they create when they don't even write their stuff. At least St. Vincent, PJ Harvey and Anna Calvi do. And I like that the outlook of things in their songs is not always focused on the same things.

    Il y a 19 jours
  • KingsAndQueen

I don't know I mean, it's not like Christina Aguilera or most of pop acts I listen to have the deepest lyrics but with Lana it's more personal. Her new album has a few references to drugs and I know music is full of them, but she makes a broad generalization of latin americans, she says something like "all cubans saying yayo" and I'm like "????" Yayo is a colombian term for cocaine, why would cubans say it? Also I don't think Colombia's situation with drugs is anything to make a party of. I don't think all cubans have a pretty situation either, so associating drugs with happiness considering why are cubans (with the Castro brothers in power for half a decade) and colombians (with the whole drug trafficking guerrilla) having such a miserable time... I think she's rather dumb. I don't know. It's also latin america's fault by not educating ourselves to express our concern for how we're viewed, but I'm tired of that stereotype that here it's all party. It just sucks.

Do you like Lana del Rey now? :) I think her new album is slightly better musically but I still can't stand her lyrics, so I only liked Shades of Cool. "You stop listening to a band because its fanbase sucks?" Not really like that, but the way people overpraise ridiculously generic ideas as if they are genius kinda makes me dislike the already generic ideas even more. "Btw why don't you scrobble anymore?" I still scrobble through my old account. It keeps the playcount and many other stats up, which only I can see, but it's fine by me. Also, I noticed that ever since I stopped scrobbling "publicly", I started listening to music a bit less, which says a lot.

Marrow has a fairly decent production by nowadays standards, one of the tracks I have in my car's audio playlist and there's not that much clipping at all, much less than on Ashes for instance. But yeah, the production could have been better, same with the new one. I haven't heard much Manowar but they seem to have lyrics that are almost (if not exactly) as cheesy as AA's, the latter are also repetitive as fuck. Insomnium are basically Amon without the gay-ass viking lyrics and with slightly more interesting compositions. That isn't to say that Amarth are a horrible band, I actually liked them in the past but the obnoxious fanbase kinda ruined them for me.

    le mois dernier
  • FyunerelFogg

And yeah, the fanboys will be always there to defend the fuck out of any material they can't stand seeing criticized. I've seen far worse ones, tho, Agalloch's fanbase isn't nearly as obnoxious as that of Insomnium or Amon Amarth or even Alcest.

  • FyunerelFogg

Ashes is an okay album but even it is somewhat of a rip-off of Pale Folklore, so to speak. And not nearly as memorable. Marrow for me is the one where they began to push their sound forward a bit instead of just creating watered down versions of Pale Folklore. The fact that the new one turned so generic is kind of weird, I thought they'd at least push the previous sound in a more delightful direction. Then again, they have always been really inconsistent, so perhaps I shouldn't be as surprised as I am.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRQb2lMv7p0 Rare that I find black metal that I enjoy, but this is from one of Katatonia's guitarists with some help from Dan Swano on some tracks. It's a bit on the avant garde metal side, but I love it!

I know that feeling, metal is starting to bore me outside of the avant-garde/experimental/progressive side. Not sure if that'll change or not, progressive rock was always a big part of my collection alongside metal, and tonal variety and volume dynamics and such seem to be more lasting overall than brickwalled metal. More lasting impact.
