What do you think of Kendrick's new single?

The brawl marked the very first time that I felt uncomfortable while watching the show. Everything about it just repulsed me for some reason. That brief exchange w/ Ariane was very telling. Jos is sooo intimidated and threatened by other women. Especially those who she views as 'prettier' than her. While I also didn't care for the fake therapy session-without-the-patient that was the remaining 45 min. of the broadcast, I do agree w/ the cast that Jos (and Stevie) needs help. Do you think they're on drugs as implied? Neither of them seemed 'present' on that stage IMO. Mona, VH1 and co. DGAF, do they? They'll do anything for viewers or $ but this could backfire on them if things cross the line, as they may have this time since there's lawsuits involved now. I plan on DVR-ing the ATL doc.

Did you see the second part of L&HH ATL reunion tonight? The epic brawl between Joseline, Stevie and the rest of the cast may be the moment where the show jumps the shark. It was always ratchet fun but that display of violence crossed the line IMO. I get the feeling that VH1 and Mona and co. also sense this. Also, there's a documentary on ATL's hip hop scene airing on VH1 tomorrow night.

Speaker Knockerz' story is tragic, man. The kids at the school I work at are singing Money and Rico's Story. Don't sleep on the '80s, bro. LOL. I'm thinking of some good recommendations for you as I type since you seem to found your way to the basics. I own all of LE's albums on vinyl.

True. He also seems very territorial so she has reason to be a lil' intimidated. LOL, I thought NFZ was Kidz Bop 12: The Trap Edition at first listen/sight. Have you ever heard of Speaker Knockerz? He's the teen rapper who died at 19 from a lean overdose. The kids at my school LOVE him. I love Loose Ends. Their 'Zagora' album is essential. It's a very sensual album at that. I tried to tell you that a lot of '80s R&B/funk was beast! Oh, trust, there was loads and loads of cheese but there were a lot of gems too. Especially from the 1980-84 period. Shit got corny from '85 and now IMO.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one annoyed by that vocal fry. It's hella annoying. I also get that "I'm mixed! I'm special" from her. I finally caught up on RLF. For a grown woman, Tamiko seems a bit dependent on her dad, no? In any case, Charisse is still trife. Did you watch the mash up episode? I only got half way to ep. 2 of this season's HC before falling asleep. NFZ sounds like Mike Will's usual fare. I was shocked to find out that the guys are in their early 20s. They sound and look like they're 12-14. I was like, "who are these little tykes rapping about lean and hoes???". LMAO. You on a '80s soul/funk kick? If so, I got plenty of recommendations.

ABG is really funny. My bad, RLF is still in the middle of its third season. I'm getting my seasons mixed up. LOL. I actually see that I have to catch up on both this season (since I left off on ep. 3) and HC's current season. The writer and creator of HC said that she wanted to play up the colorism element on the show b/c she feels that it powers each interaction between friends of different shades even if it's not spoken. IRL, a woman who looks like Whitney would have NO problem getting a date. Yeah, Robyn is just i-ight. Yet, I've never been one to sweat anything light so maybe I'm playing down her looks. LOL. Do you like No Flex Zone?

I watched and enjoyed the first season of Hello Cupid but still haven't watched the second season yet since the season premiere was only available w/ a price. LOL. I'll catch up this weekend tho. What did you think of the season finale of Roomieloverfriend? Yeah, the girl who plays Whitney is really cute. She's a lot better looking than her co-star who likes a generic mixed chick IMO.

To be honest, whenever I come across a young (40 and under) person that lives in major metros like NYC and LA who works in the arts, I wonder what their real source of income really is 'cause ain't no way they're affording a decent (or even just mediorce) place in the city (especially LA) on a PT/writer/musician/artist's salary. Just no. LOL. Tamiko's father seems well-off considering that he owns the building his daughter lives in. So, perhaps, he supplements her lifestyle? Didn't know that The Couple was picked up by HBO. Hopefully, they don't tamper w/ the show's premise too much. I know that Shonda Rhimes was interested in working w/ Issa Rae. Some of the cable networks wanted to pick up ABG but wanted another actress to portray "Jaye" but Issa wouldn't oblige.

I know about Little 5 Points but didn't know about Midtown. Now I see where I'd live if I choose ATL! LOL. Yooo! I've always thought the same thing about those series! Don't none of them MFers ever talk about a job of any sort yet live in this large, roomy apartments in nice neighborhoods in LA. GTFOH. Wait, isn't dude on Roomieloverfriend a personal trainer? Affording a nice apt. in LA on a PT salary? Gimme a break. The LA apartments I've viewed/researched in the last week or so are way overpriced for where they are and what they offer. I don't get how some say that LA is less expensive than NYC when it seems like the opposite is true. Yeah, both the West and Northeast are pretty pricey. That's what makes ATL an option for me. The cost of living is so right. I can't get into Raury's stuff yet but he's the blog's great black hype at the moment. Never heard of Two-9. You're lucky, AP is expanding to the A b/c it's a great vibe. It's wonderful seeing so much black individuality in one place, co-existing peacefully. Now, I really want to move to Brooklyn. LOL. Speaking of that, in a strange twists of events, it seems like rent prices in NYC are more affordable than in LA where a $800-$1400 budget seems to place you in either deep in the ghetto or in a shoebox far from everything. Have you heard of Raury? He's from Stone Mountain and will be opening for 'Kast. His album dropped today: https://soundcloud.com/raury/sets/indigo-child

AfroPunk was incredible, man. Great experience. I've never seen so many beautiful women in one place in my life. The outfits, the hair, the attitude...it was awe-inspiring. I definitely got my eyes full. I saw SZA, Me'shell and D'Angelo live. SZA definitely held back vocally on her 'Z' project b/c she can sing! Her voice is beautiful. D had us wait for an hour before he finally came out. He mostly performed deep covers like Funkadelic's No Head No Backstage Pass, a rock version of Bob Marley's Burnin' and Lootin', Ohio Players' Our Love Has Died, Prince's She's Always in My Hair and more. He only did one song of his own, a version of Greatdayinamornin' which was merged into a cover of Sly's Thankful 'n' Thoughtful. Needless to say, much of the crowd, already perturbed that they had to stand neck to neck w/ thousands of others for an hour before he hit the stage, wasn't feeling it. I managed to take some good shots of his performance.

Yeah, he's not bad in his lane, I guess, but I'm not a fan of that video game-sounding backpack shit. LOL. Have you ever been to the ONE Musicfest? This year's line-up is sick. Nas is the headliner. I brought a fast pass to AP tomorrow so I get to skip the lines and chill w/ the Everyday People crew. So excited! I had a feeling that the anti-black violence would intensify in the wake of Obama's re-election. The resentment and bigotry is no longer subtle now.

  • jdotperiod

LOL. Glad I'm not crazy 'cause I never heard it either. Doesn't El-P's production sound video game-y? I brought one of his albums years ago based off of the hype and you know I sold that shit right back soon after. LMAO. Funnily enough, I'm just finalizing our meet-up time tomorrow at the festival. My friend who attended today said that it was insane. I plan on seeing Meshell, SZA, The Internet, Unlocking the Truth and Fishbone tomorrow. D'Angelo may or may not show up. LOL. Yup, AP is expanding to ATL and Oakland next year. 'Bout time since I always found it unfair that people outside of the Tri-State couldn't really attend. Did you hear about Blood Orange's run-in w/ the cops?

I know I'm preaching to the choir. LOL. I liked Mike's verses on R.A.P. but I couldn't get with the production at all. It was too synthetic and nerdy sounding. Mike needs that thick, soulful G-Funk ish IMO. I'm going to be at AfroPunk tomorrow. I plan to meet up w/ some of my folks up there. Did you know that the festival is expanding to ATL next year?

You're surprised, bruh? Lemon is their token and since this a "black issue", of course, he'll have to be there. He'll understand "them." *shakes head* Why doesn't CNN host a town hall forum w/ the residents of the city or at least aim to allow them to speak their minds? You're spot on about Lemon being the "black friend" many white racists flaunt around. He's black w/ a white mind hence why he's accepted in that world. I enjoyed that KM interview. This may sound weird but Mike's interviews, in general, always make me disappointed that I don't care for R.A.P. Music or Run The Jewelz all that much. LOL. He needs to let go of El-P right away and reunite with ON or hook up w/ Krizzle.

    août 2014
  • jdotperiod

That's what's up. Some say Talib seemed egotistical when he brought up Lemon's lack of a personal greeting but I think they're missing the point. Talib was boldly pointing out the lack of professionalism and integrity on the parts of Lemon and his CNN goons. I'm so glad folks are finally NOT believing the hype and challenging the skewed propaganda that the mainstream media spits out. That a black man like DL is the station's lone or most prominent black face/voice tells you everything about CNN's true mentality.

Word? It's actually inspiring that thousands of people trooped out in the streets despite the stormy weather all in the name of justice. Did you take pictures? The day sounded historic. Ezell Ford's murder was actually one of the top local news stories when I was in LA. In fact, news of his murder juxtaposed w/ the marches in South Central being shut down. It's a sad case of irony that folks were marching for the town of Ferguson, MO when the same shit is happening in their backyards. It goes to show you that this issue is hardly "just" regional. Check this out, bruh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktv6IcDaozk Tell me DL (pun intended-evil laugh) isn't the living incarnation of Tom DuBois.

    août 2014

That's incredible, man. ATL definitely has a strong lineage of civil rights and social justice so I'm very heartened to here that the city is still maintaining that legacy. Same here. Boring on first listen. Then, a few months later, I re-listened out of the blue and BAM! LOL. She has a certain allure that's similar to what Aaliyah had IMO. Yo, you actually went? That's what's up! There was a protest in South LA last week while I was out there. Of course, it got shut down even tho it was non-violent.

It does! It's an evolution from the mellowness of UTCQ, which I loved. Yup, they play a little bit of everything out in LA. I discovered so much new music out there between KCRW, Amoeba Music and various events I attended. You don't like Kelela? I thought her mixtape was boring on first listen but then one day, I re-listened and became entranced. LOL. World Restart, the song I linked, is one of my favorites of the moment. It's too funky.

Oh shit! This album is going to be insane. I knew he was working w/ Herbie, Snoop and Kendrick and the results sound ill. I'm definitely seeing him live during this tour. Between, this, Jessie Ware and SBTRKT, I'm anxious for October. Speaking of the latter, his new single has grown on me since KCRW played it quite a bit when I was out in LA. Man, that is so amazing. Congrats on starting your new job. It's tough for a while, but when you find something, it is always rewarding. I'm personally trying to find something related to photography, social media, website design, multimedia editing, or video work, as it relates to my field. By earlier next month, I hope to probably work for a photography agency or something related to media. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and my options opened. There are so many ways to approach the media and journalism world right now, contrary to what many may believe.

Hey bro! What has been going on sir? It has certainly been a while. I've been in a whirlwind of nothing but blessings this year. I'm now a graduate and I'm in "post-undergrad" mode where I'm looking for new job opportunities and the like. Have so much to look at from now until the end of this year, but I plan on getting into something major before the fall season ends. This summer I've just been working on getting adjusted and everything. How have you been sir?

The entertainment industry is only a very small portion of LA culture. It's also a fairly dirty city w/ mostly working class people. Mexicans are the predominate group not only here but in California as a whole. They're everywhere here!!!! LMAO. Unsurprisingly, there's not many of us left out here in Cali. I'm in Orange County right now and lord, I haven't see so many Asians in one place outside of that continent. Whites are the minority out here as well. The white and Mexican hipsters at the Inc. show I saw were annoying. The sound quality at the venue--a crappy club in the hipster neighborhood of Silver Lake, north of Hollywood--wasn't that great. The guys stopped mid-way b/c of feedback a couple times. LOL, yup, Larry Heard is Mr. Fingers. House acts tend to record under a variety of aliases. When I'm back home, I'll send you the Blaze link since their sound is very jazzy. I think you'd also like Tortured Soul.

LA is definitely interesting thus far. It's nothing like its depicted in the media, that's for sure but it still has its appeal. Jury's out if I'd pick it over NYC tho. I'll fill you in on more when I'm back home Monday. I saw inc. live out her earlier in the week. The crowd was filled w/ a bunch of weird hipsters and for some reason, gay couples. I'm not sure if it was an LA thing or if their music appeals to those types. They changed the arrangements of a lot of the songs and premiered some new ones. I skipped The Low End Theory Wen. b/c I was leery of the crowd but enjoyed Funkmosphere last night. How you like Mr. Fingers? I have to send you a link to Blaze's LP. You'll definitely dig it.

    août 2014
  • jdotperiod

That's a relief if he is. Jonsin is a decent producer. I had no clue he was white until maybe a year ago. Rico can't sing, man. LOL. I agree, someone like BJ would've been better. I was just afraid that Def Jam was trying to turn Krizzle into a radio artist that they can sell and that would suck b/c his sound is so unique. I can see how you'd get a Jamiroquai or Roy Ayers vibe from Get Up. The classic soul influence on 25 Years Later is very strong. I'm off to LA today!

    août 2014
  • jdotperiod

My thoughts exactly! Her appeal seems mostly visual. She's one of those artists who I'd think I'd like more than I actually do. I hated on Pay Attention at first b/c it's not a KRIT production and b/c of the cliched R&B hook and subject matter but after a few listens, I don't think it's a bad radio ditty at all. I do hope that Krizzle handles most of the production on Cadallitica tho. The house album is Blaze's 25 Years Later. It's a really great LP and regarded as one of the best the genere's ever seen. It's a concept album about the life and times of a black nationalist from the 'hood. Here's the opener and my favorite jam: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7pMdmHdfik

    août 2014
  • jdotperiod

Yeah, it dropped last week, I believe. I'm still semi-lukewarm on her music but I think it's OK.. If you liked the EP, you'll probably dig the LP since the sound is similar. Lights Out is my jam tho. I was thinking of seeing her in LA during my visit but tickets are already sold out. Your thoughts on KRIT's new single? Also, next time, you're in a house or dance mood, I have the perfect album for you.

True, he's neither the first nor the last to invent a persona on record. Yet, you can argue that others that recorded from the perspective of an alter ego at least switched it up a bit over time. Abel's still doing the same shit he was doing in 2011 w/ lesser production. Shame on Coachella then. Then again, that crowd is probably not the most hip hop-savvy anyway so maybe it's not a surprise. I find Azealia to be underrated in terms of looks. The long weaves are a bit much but she is a pretty girl. 1991 and Licorice are my jams from that EP. Didn't know she had a new album dropping. She's better off indie IMO. So, I'm officially going to LA for a week next month. I'm so excited, man. I already have a list of all the things I plan on doing. The week will kick off w/ a day at Amoeba Music and a live gig by inc. at some indie club downtown.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

It is. There's so only so far you can go with his style and subject matter. LOL, he does come across as a lame. I don't buy that he ever was the drugged out Lothario he portrays in his music. Janelle and OutKast on stage together makes too much sense. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a Dungeon Family reunion, of sorts, onstage. How were they received at Coachella? I didn't know you liked Azealia. She recently got dropped. LOL.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

LMAO @ "druggy orgies with strung out white girls". So true! His shtick doesn't have a long shelf life, that's for sure. I've seen pics of FlyLo live and even from photographs, I got the impression that he has manic energy onstage. LOL, yes, an OutKast reunion in the A will pretty much be the second coming. Folks are going to be doing the holy ghost in the aisles, bruh!

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

LOL, I think I may just stick to Abel's first three mixtapes and call it a day. Everything that's came afterwards is pretty lame. He peaked early IMO. Ezra's voice is I don't know, too surfer dude-ish? It doesn't really fit on the track to me. ITA on Janelle. You need to really sit down w/ her music in order for it to click so I'm not surprised I'm just now "really" feeling TEL even tho I did really enjoy it upon release. I've never been to a beathead/producer show so I really anticipate seeing FlyLo live. Did he interact w/ the crowd when you saw him? You're going to see OutKast? That's epic, man.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Also, I WILL see FlyLo live this time. He'll be in NYC and Boston a week or two after the album drops. SBTRKT will kick off the North American leg of his tour in ATL.

  • jdotperiod

So, Jessie Ware, FlyLo and SBTRKT all have new albums dropping in the fall. FlyLo's is called You're Dead! and comes out on Oct. 7. SBTRKT's new one's first single features Ezra from Vampire Weeknd. I like the beat but am unsure if Ezra's vocals really fit over the instrumental: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5_qsgzGDhs Funny, I've also revisited The Electric Lady as well and now find it to be quite amazing. There's so many layers to the production that take tons of listens to really check. Cool avatar.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

She also worked w/ Blood Orange but it's undetermined if their collabo will make the album. Sheeran reminds me of Justin Nozaka w/ that commercial blue-eyed soul singer/songwriter sound. The likes of J*Davey and Sa-Ra were popping in the underground w/ that experimental, electronic R&B-ish sound before Abel and Frank hit but didn't receive the same level of mainstream hype as they did. I think Abel/Frank are the most imitated acts of the last few years along w/ Future and Drake.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okC1XE0jX2U -->The first single and title track of the new album. I like the easy '80s feel. She did a song w/ Miguel but it's unknown if it'll make the final product. She also worked w/ Ed Shereen. Are you a fan of his? 'Alternative R&B' was interesting back in 2011 when The Weeknd and Frank Ocean hit the blogsophere but once they spawned an army of imitators, what was 'fresh' and 'new' soon became stale and contrived.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

I also found 8Ball and Richie Rich's verses on Killa to be kinda tacked on. My favorite song on the new tape is 'Fly'. It's just one of those joints that just floats. HTDW's falsetto/tenor borders on obnoxious. I also am exhausted w/ the lo-fi, ambient R&B sound. It's become cliche. Have you heard Jessie Ware's new single?

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Mos def. Her delusion and sudden change of heart is almost surreal. I agree, the songs on AM's new tape are stronger and more developed even if I enjoyed the first one's production as well. LOL, you weren't feeling the feats.? You'll like LD's latest. It's funny, I pretty much forced myself to check out HTDW's new one last night. It's more developed and song orientated than his previous releases but dude's voice...talk about an acquired taste!

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

I forgot about that! She sure was pro-Obama. What happened? Same here, I used to love me some Stacey Dash but nowadays, I dunno. AM's tape is on deck for a re-listen tonight. On first listen, I did notice that it was more focused than its predecessor. Hey, did you check out Little Dragon and How to Dress Well's latest?

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Exactly. Do blacks like Stacey feel like they are exempt from the vitriol their white cronies spew against blacks/POC? I'll have to give AM's mixtape another listen b/c while smooth and listenable, it seems a tad bit long. LOL, Def Jam's at it again w/ the lack of promo. Hype Williams directed a really good video the single Kingdom but that's pretty much been it when it comes to promotion.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Stacey really alienated her mostly black fanbase w/ her antics. I don't think we should all have a monolithic view of politics but c'mon, the lady played herself. Faux News is like the home channel for openly racist conservatives. Is Adrian Marcel's mixtape any good? I have Common's new album on my HD but I'm not in a rush to listen to it for some reason.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Yup. Yet, that's why they're famous IMO. They weren't threatening so the powers that be felt comfortable elevating them to a high level of fame. I also get it on some level...we all need to eat. Yet, at the cost of your integrity? I heard about Stacey Dash joining Fox News. At first, I was like WTF? but when you think about it, she's a perfect fit. LOL.

    juillet 2014
  • jdotperiod

Yessir! LOL. Honestly speaking, most of the high profile black celebs seem to have this mentality. Many are playing a role to keep the checks flowing while others truly do believe they are "different" and exempt.
