By the way ... my love for high capacity power lines and suspension bridges is almost as big as my love for cranes

It depends on the artist and tunes in question. I have been known to listen to the same tune for days on end sometime. For example Moritz von Oswald's Watamu Beach rework, or Atheus inChainFX. Those are just two examples of tunes I have listened to ad infinitum. There have probably been others too.

Yea I'm quite a big fan of pretty much everything Hecq has done, just gotten even more into him the last couple of months. The "bad" late-to-the-party dubstep album is in fact some of the better dubstep of that kind, athough such music isn't really on top of my list of interests anymore. I can however see how it "upset" a lot of people who were into his earlier stuff, it's defo not for them. I think it helped get his name out more though, so that's all good for him. Not sure what he's up to right now, but I believe the more Ambient related music he produces is going to go under "Ben Lukas Boysen" and not Hecq anymore. I really hope he does more stuff like the album Steeltongued. Or 0000. Or Scatterheart.. or or.. :p

Just had a look at Royal Holloway's MA and it looks great - I might actually look into applying there myself if I take a master's, so thanks for the tip! Pynchon's another of my favourites, even though it took me a whole summer to finish Gravity's Rainbow. And yeah, I can imagine America being a bit more DFW-friendly. I have vague plans to do a MA somewhere in Europe, maybe Berlin or Copenhagen, depending on how the rest of my time studying here in Helsinki goes (I'm on the Erasmus programme). Kinda trying to work out whether I want to do an MA for the right reasons or just to postpone looking for a job, haha. I'm finding Sheffield pretty great: the department's unstuffy and the course has enough elbow room to cater for specific interests without losing its structure. And the city itself is lovely.

Awesome - what aspect of his work is it going to be on, if you don't mind me asking? What university are you at? I'm a second year English student at Sheffield, but there's not always a whole lot of scope for DFW-related stuff on the course. I did manage to use his dispatch from the AVN awards for an essay on J.G. Ballard's The Atrocity Exhibition though, which was fun.

Dunno, This Binary Universe is good, the cheesy trance albums are ridiculous though.

I totally agree, I've walked, jogged, worked to his album already to name a few. Just one of those albums that just sucks you in!

as for the nostalgia/teen factor of what we love eternally, I do the same thing, though lately I find myself more into things that reference or were influenced by or are influenes of or just straight up, in some weird way, reflect the sounds and the zeitgeist I was into around the age of 16-19, whether its ambient techno or jammed out jazz or headphone psych, there is some direct link to the things I loved at that time.

First of all, I hope you do see Koy very soon, it's one of those 'fundamental' films that you'll always look back on and reference other films to and frankly it just stands alone as a monument of a work. Inextricable from the film itself is the score, which is one of my favorite Philip Glass pieces ever - the two were made together but you can obviously listen to the music more often than sit down to watch the whole film... I feel what you mean about receding from the digital gluttony that we're all supposed to be loving and thankful for. It reduces music to something we accumulate and appraise rather than appreciate, love, embrace, live with. I hit a turning point a while back and now purchase on vinyl if possible everything I truly enjoy, from current discoveries to classics and favorites I never actually owned. The tangibility helps cement these pieces of art as a part of my life, in a way.

No doubt there are plenty of wrong'uns out there, but for me there is something admirable about teaching English in these parts. No, my gripe is more with certain NGO workers, who live in their highly-paid bubbles for only negligible returns... but enough negativity. All the best with whatever you choose to pursue!

Oh yeah, I just downloaded that Julia Holter album. About to give it a spin. For some reason I have extremely high expectations - hopefully they'll be met!

Hey man, thanks for the kind words. Sadly I've let the blogs wither a little. Anyway, how I came to be here is not such an interesting story. Basically I was chasing a vibe from a holiday a couple of years prior. A small email trail and then I was here in dusty Vientiane - all in the name of 'life experience', or something, just as I was considering postgrad studies of my own. What kind of thing would you like to do in SE Asia? Not that I'm an authority really, but I reckon it's a great time to venture this way. Big things are happening.

my vinyl listening, it should be noted, is always on my monitor speakers, though they could be larger and hopefully will be soon.

oh I love listening on big speakers too but it's not always practical at the moment - except in the car. I don't have a full on system like in my last car (I used to burn everything to cd just to hear it there, where it sounded far and away the best) but it's still damn nice. The stereo here just can't be cranked like I like it all the time, and besides with my DAC/amp and sennheisers music probably has the most fidelity in my cans.

well you've sold me, I found a couple things on blogs to try out. that's the kind of music that hit me in a certain way long ago, striking me as 'this is the future!' and the feeling has never really shaken. also nothing has ever truly felt so fresh as the idm stuff (and to be honest all of the electronic i got into as a latter teen) and I'm always happy to hear someone doing something new with it. plus I'm a sucker for space/scifi/dypstopian imagery... and please do check SB out again if you'd like! I was inspired to do a little writeup on my blog last night if you want to parse that. I didn't do it justice, considering how much I've listened to it by now, but I was compelled to say something. Listening on good headphones just opens that thing up in a way that makes me understand why people on computer speakers wouldn't 'get' it.

Well, try not to mind the trends or lists much, y'know? Never good to feel suspicious of what people are suddenly "in love" with - I know from experience. I find the less I care or know who's hyping what, the more easily I find music that I truly enjoy. For instance, I finally checked out Shabazz Palaces despite my hype-dar going off all spring, and realized that it's damn near my favorite album of the year, any genre. Never should have let the hipster-sounding name keep me away! oh yeah, I heard the new DS material btw and think it's a solid, if a little placid, next step. I'm always happy for music like that which has a true whiff of menace about it, not just the rote "darkness" so many reach for. one last thing: Space Dimension Controller sounds like an interesting name. recommend?

eh, I hadn't heard any hype for it tbh, was just a related artist to stuff I'm into. the one I heard 'Pass Me By" just really works those low frequencies in a way that strikes my fancy. Wasn't hearing the Actress similarities so much, as I started to read many references to..

that Teebs! so good. I finally heard the DS tracks, and really really want that 4x gatefold... ridiculously expensive! Oh well I've got Triptych for now. Wish I had that super limited 3lp set but this will do, especially with its bonus material. have you heard this exquisite Andy Stott album?? somehow the bass is even deeper than DS go, my brain feels like it's being compressed.

btw its more like just that one song, the tone it uses, kinda overdrives the speakers. my stereo isn't the greatest so it probably doesn't show up on yrs..
